The First Time I Fell in Love- NaBloPoMo # 5

Today’s prompt is “how old were you the first time you fell in love?”
My first serious boyfriend didn’t come into my life until I was a senior in high school.
He told me he loved me two months after we started dating and yes, I was in love as much as a 17-year-old could be.
But if I am being technical, that wasn’t the first time I fell in love. I fell in love for the first time when I was 12.
I don’t remember how it happened or where I was when I first saw them but I do remember for all of middle school, mostly contained to 8th grade, I was totally, madly, deeply, obsessively in love.
With a boy band.
From Puerto Rico.
Named after a soup.
Yes, I, a 12-year-old white girl from rural Ohio was in love with Menudo.
My family knew about it.
My parents let me adorn my walls with magazine cut-outs.
Adorn is actually a light term for it.
My room looked like it was wallpapered with Puerto Rican teenagers.
Kind of scary like a teen version of Silence Of The Lambs only with Robby, Charlie, Ray, Ricky, and Roy.My friends knew all about it.
I even sucked one of my friends into my Menudo hysteria.
My BFF Wendy started to like Charlie.
Which was fine because I was totally into Ray.
Then Roy.
But more Ray than Roy. I even had a friend who had family in Chicago and apparently they had a Menudo store there.
And apparently, they had all things Menudo in that store.
So I gave her money and she bought me some things.
I have no idea what.
I am sure a poster because you know, I didn’t have enough for the Menudo bomb shelter I was creating.I also requested information from the Puerto Rico Tourism board.
So I could go to Puerto Rico.
Even though I am pretty sure they all lived in LA.

  1. I love it! I'm trying to think about my first love. I did have a HUGE crush on a former NBA player, Alonzo Mourning. Oh the memories.

  2. I always wondered why you moved to Chicago. It all makes sense now…the Menudo store. The bomb shelter comment was my laugh out loud moment. Nicely played.

  3. Shannon- no they don't! I miss big hair and shiny pants. Shiny, TIGHT pants. Ahem…Laila- I remember him! And it is fun to go back and relive the old days. Only I would rethink my love of blue mascara.Pam- I remember him! Of course, the members of Menudo are probably grandparents too. And Ricky Martin will always be 21. Marianne- I cannot confirm or deny that I moved here for Menudo. 😉
