Is This Bag Supposed to be Leaking? Homemade Ice Cream

I found a recipe for homemade ice cream!
And it only has four ingredients!
And you don’t need an ice cream maker!
Because YOU, my friend, are the ice cream maker.
Oh, and by the way, there was a dead link associated with the above Pinterest find so I can’t attach a link.
This, however, is not a new idea, I remember this idea when I was growing up.
But we HAD an ice cream maker, so we didn’t have to do this.
And let me tell you, that is THE best ice cream you will ever have.

Here is what you will need:

– small Ziploc bag
– gallon size Ziploc bag
– 1/2 C. half and half
– 1 T. sugar
– 1 t. vanilla
– ice cubes
– salt (I would use coarse salt, like sea salt)

Add the half and half, sugar, and vanilla to the smaller Ziploc bag.
Then put ice cubes and salt into the gallon size Ziploc bag.
Seal the smaller bag and place it inside the larger one.
Seal the large one and start shaking.
And shaking.

And shaking.

And shaking.
Even the snarky teenage girls loved it.
And I mean that in the most loving way.
These “snarky” teens stayed up until 3 am this day for a “sleepover”.
Which makes no sense since basically there was no sleep that occurred.
I think they shook it for five minutes or less.
There were a few malfunctions.
The bag started leaking, and the inner bag fell into the sink.
Next time, I am doing this outside.

But it was raining this day.

Of course, it was.
And it looks like this when you’re all done:

Like clumpy ice cream!

It doesn’t make much.
I tried to double it, and it didn’t really form well like the first batch.

So the consensus?
It tasted so good.
Just like ice cream.

My five-year-old was drinking the leftovers out of the bowl.
You will do this over and over.
We did it three times in the afternoon because the batches are so small.
But it was a fun way to make another rainy summer day go a little faster.

So I mentioned last week how my five-year-old had a school packet the teachers sent home and how we hadn’t even attempted to open it.
Well, this started happening last week:

At home.

Rewards and flashcards are a big hit.

I am no teacher, but I love helping her to get ready for kindergarten.

So Summer isn’t winning anymore.
We are.

  1. So it was you who ordered up the hot, hot weather. Don't you know heat makes me cranky? Bring me some ice cream. And a margarita.

  2. Margaritas are proof that God wants us to be happy in warm weather. Be over in 45 minutes……

  3. I LOVE making homemade ice cream! We have a maker, but I do the ziploc bag making with my kindergarten class. We usually double the small ziploc back to avoid leaks… And I bring in a bunch of towels because their little hands are always so cold! But, it really does make delicious ice cream. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it so much!

  4. I'm going to try your ice cream this afternoon. Hope you're enjoying your hotter than heck summer now. I was sort of getting used to the cooler temps. Now I have to figure out where I need to move to to get that kind of weather on a regular basis 🙂

  5. Pam- it's definitely NOT Illinois or Ohio. I think San Diego is like that though. Getting out my suit case….

  6. We have done this a few times and love it every time!! We might need to get those baggies out today…..91 degrees!Have a great weekend!
