My Trip to Goodwill. Back in November.

I went to Goodwill back in November and I never wrote about it.

I know. I need to turn my blogging credentials in.

I feel compelled to talk about it for a few reasons.

1- it gives me something to write about when I have nothing else to write about.

2- it lets me share my life experiences. Some people get to go to Disney every year, other people get to go to Goodwill.

3-ย life is fragile, soย why not write about shopping in a thrift store two months ago?

Listen, it has been a shitty year for many people. The fact that I am still breathing makes me appreciate life in a way that I am sure many of you can.

David Bowie, Prince and George Michael all died the same year. Let that sink in.ย

So I will write about trivial things like Goodwill shopping visits, or what shape your poop was this morning: discuss posts all the damn day in 2017 because I can.

I already talked to you about my essential voodoo oil storage solution here and I think we realized with that post how much I could stretch out one visit to a chain thrift store into a series on my blog.

I mentioned this tray in my essential oil post because I love a good tray.

Back in 2011, I created the above with a plain old tray I got at Goodwill.

I also mentioned in the post that I thought it was so cute that I never wanted to cover it up.

I am SUCH a liar.

I have a thing for trays apparently. But I didn’t want to do any DIY to it because I am getting old and honestly, I just end up covering up my work so why the hell even do any, to begin with?

Lookie at my new useless orange plastic medallion!

In my defense, it was only 99 cents.

That is my only defense.

I like architectural crap like this.

So I made my impulse buy and left the store.

The day I bought this, it was 70 degrees.

In November.

It was like God was telling me to buy the medallion and spray paint it!

I also had a helper.

She loves to spray paint.

Which means she will become one kick-ass graffiti artist or a DIY blogger.

Or both.

I gave her the kindling candle holder to spray paint.

Wink wink.

P.S.- I love her so much.

After one coat and I am already loving this.

What I like to call creating artwork with crap from Goodwill.

Way back in November.

Happy 2017.

  1. Loving it! I think its is fantastic even though you know I would’ve left it orange. This will only be topped by the day you paint it back… orange ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy 2017!

  2. I live in Florida and still I’m one from the get to go goodwill each year crowd and not Disney. That rat is expensive!!

I would never have known 99cents could turn into something I LOVE. People can just buy me goodwill crap for Christmas.

Trays….I have dreams of one day having a tray and my husband walking in with my breakfast on it, in bed, that I didn’t make.

  3. Reading the comments…a gift card to Goodwill would be so cool! I wonder why they haven’t thought about this. You should get right on that, Kari! I love what you did with the medallion and it’s something you could change at any time ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I, too, vote for Goodwill gift cards. Love your medallion. I went to Goodwill yesterday, but it wasn’t a good thrift store day. Some days, I go in there and it’s like everything I see is so full of amazing potential and I have to stop myself from walking out with me. Other days, it feels like a monument to crap and I feel all itchy and gritchy and I have to get out before I lose all capacity to love my fellow man. That was yesterday. But I will live to thrift shop another day.

You do whatever you have to do to get through 2017 in one piece. I have a feeling 2016 was just a warmup.

    1. YES! I actually hadn’t been inside a Goodwill in over a year because the previous visits were unproductive.

Oh friend, I just can’t open my eyes most days. It is sad and scary.

  5. I love how the medallion turned out – true treasure out of someone’s trash. Isn’t it amazing that art is everyone if you just pay attention?

  6. I’ve never been to Disney but I’ve been to Goodwill plenty of times! I’m not real good at upcycling things though.
I went to a thrift store the other day and purchased two coats, a dress, and a shirt for $16. I get a natural high when I can get a good bargain.

  7. Creating artwork from “crap” is the best thing in the world and yours turned out awesome! Aaannd I’m jumping on the Goodwill gift card bandwagon. Our Goodwill is really expensive OR I’m the cheapest person that ever lived. Probably the latter. Although, that medallion would have cost double, DOUBLE, here ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Ours is too! I honestly think it is because of Pinterest that Goodwill raised prices. Because back when I first started blogging, it was much more reasonable. I think I got a lucky find that day. ๐Ÿ™‚
