Green Doors Can Heal You

In 2013, we had a burgundy front door.

Front exterior door

That looked like hell because 13 years of wear and tear will do that to a door.

So I decided that I was going to paint it myself.

Our house color is white so I wanted a color that popped. I chose Paradise Green by Sherwin Williams because green was going to be my bold statement to the outside world.

After painting it in 2013, I fell in love with a metal slab that is attached to the front of our home to keep intruders out.

Our new green front door

After sharing this color with the world, I got lots of great comments. My friends on Facebook went WILD with the pictures I took in front of the green door. For years, my profile picture was always taken in front of my “signature” green door.

I HAD A “SIGNATURE” GREEN DOOR!

As good bloggers do.

Then in 2016, I decided that my green door needed a touch-up.

Probably because of all the “signature” green door pictures.

But instead of simply touching it up, I decided to go another way.

Enter Spicy Hue by Sherwin Williams.

Spicy Hue

Honestly, It broke my heart to paint it. Looking back, I have no idea what came over me. I loved the green, everyone loved the green, hell, even the teenager loved the green. Why? WHY?

I blame perimenopause.

It wasn’t like Spicy Hue was terrible but it had big shoes to fill.

Big Paradise Green shoes.

I rarely kept the door open with this orange color. With my friend Paradise Green, I kept it open every chance I got.

Then one day this spring, I had an epiphany: you can’t even notice our front door from the outside. Like, it wasn’t even there. Just a big Spicy Hue blank space.

That’s just sad.

I’ve said it before and I will say it forever, there’s nothing like a party to get your ass in gear as it pertains to your home.

Anna’s graduation party was looming and I had many other more important things to do but I did what I do best when I am stressed: do what’s not even remotely necessary.

I headed to Home Depot on a beautifully sunny day (which I could have spent working in the much-needed garden) and slapped the Paradise Green Sherwin Williams paint chip on the counter.

The lovely lady there tried to give me advice and I nicely said, “this isn’t my first painting rodeo”. to which she nodded knowingly.

I did take her recommendation about paint: oil based. The paint of our childhood. There is NOTHING low-VOC about this paint.

The pros? It doesn’t chip easily so longer wait in between paintings meaning it can last almost a decade without touchups. To which I snort-laughed out loud because the lovely paint lady had no idea who she was dealing with.

Three paint colors in five years, chicka. You can’t find this kind of nutso very often, bask in it.

The day I was painting, I had a house full of teenagers. Brag moment- my daughter and her friends are spectacular; I love them so much. To mom’s of early teenagers- it gets better. SO much better, trust me.

So while painting the toxic Paradise Green door, these beautiful teenagers were in and out of the house. Comments like, “aww the green door is back!”, and “the green door reminds me of freshman year!” as well as, “I love that smell” echoed throughout the house.

I love that smell too. It smells like 1984. When paint used to be toxic. Ahh, the good old days.

This job calls for our big old 1984-inspired box fan to get the fumes to die down a bit because it was becoming a little hard to breathe.

The negative with oil based paint? It takes forever to dry. I started painting this at 11 in the morning and it wasn’t fully dry until evening the following day.

The positive with oil based paint? You will only need one coat even without primer.

The lovely Home Depot lady tried to upsell me on primer before she found out that I was a painting your front door veteran.

Amazing what a good green door can do for your soul.

It’s like it’s 2013 in here all over again.

I can’t turn back the clock however hard I wish and try, but at least my front door is the right color again.

  1. I love your green door. Always have, always will. I’m glad it’s back. My front door is a bright, sunny yellow. The old door before that was a bright red. Statement doors are where it’s at.

  2. Oh yes! I like that much better than “Spicy Hue”! Your flowers looked better against that green door too.

  3. No contest between the colors. No offense on the burgundy and spicy hummus or whatever the other color was but Paradise Green is so you. Did you blast David Lee Roth’s “Just Like Paradise” while you painted it? I would’ve.

“I had many other more important things to do but I did what I do best when I am stressed: do what’s not even remotely necessary.” Yep…you are I were separated at birth.

    1. Spicy Hummus…..I am laughing so hard right now.
I didn’t blast that song, but now I can’t get it out of my head so really the same thing.

  4. Man, I need to paint my door again! I painted it brown the last time because I was in my short lived neutral phase. Now I want to go bolder. Not Paradise Green bold, but maybe In Your Face Turquoise bold. I just have to figure out how to scrape the old brown paint off because the paint blistered and started to peel and now it’s just a big old brown mess.

    1. I considered turquoise before going back to green. If there is an actual color called In Your Face Turquoise, I feel you need to paint your front door in it.

Random- did your episode of Trading Spaces air yet??

  5. Un-fudging believable, that green door is amazing. Love the color, it’s so happy and wacky and perfectly green and yes I agree, teenagers just get better and better as they get more teenagish.

  6. This is the first green front door I’ve seen, and I love it! I am a traditionalist, I am going to paint from front door red when we finally get a house. Because I haven’t had a house since I was 12, AND it just feels right. BUT I think green may be my second color, because that door looks awesome. And I love that the memories the kids had with it, how great is that? And what great timing!

    1. Red is a great front door color. Burgundy? Eh. I also love yellow. If my house was dark gray, I would totally have a yellow door.

The green door just feels like it gives a good vibe to our home. 🙂

  7. Our door is a nice deep blue and every time I think of repainting it I just can’t bring myself to paint over that color because I love it so much… so I tend to pick a shade just like it and paint it that color instead. I might be the only person that knows our door has really been 3 colors… they just all look the same.
