Things You Need For The Second Half of The Shitshow

Also known as the last half of the year that won’t ever end.

AND WE GET TO HAVE AN ELECTION TOO.

Before we get started I do have one little request.

I want you to make sure you are checking in on people.

We wake up and our news feed is filled with absolute nonsense. I am having to keep my mental health and the mental health of my family on the upswing.

It is exhausting. Aren’t you exhausted too?

So here are some tips to help you out.

Here are seven “little shelters in the storm” to get you going.

Feeling hopeless? Here are things you can do to create and maintain hope in a post-coronavirus world

4 Things to remember when you’re feeling hopeless

If you need to talk, please reach out.

If we are not on this planet in order to help each other, then what in God’s name is the point?

On to some really good stuff.

Starting out with this one because I couldn’t wait until the October tater tot post to share. If you’re a fan of the Father of the Bride movie series, this will make you quite happy and we need happy now more than ever.

I know a lot of trick or treat is canceled (as it should be, we are in a pandemic for God’s sake) but you can still make it fun for kids by having fun little activities in your home and they can still get dressed up.

I love the hell out of this costume idea for little kids:

Here are 21 ideas to celebrate Halloween during COVID-19

Americans get creative to celebrate Halloween safely

I love some of those ideas. I know one of my friends is hosting a socially distant flashlight candy hunt for her nieces and nephews in lieu of trick or treating.

See how much fun it is to find alternatives rather than complain?

Speaking of not being a pain in the ass, you’re pooping incorrectly according to Tech Insider.

Here is how to do it the right way:

I feel like we know each other on a more personal level now, don’t you?

I saw this quickly on Pinterest and thought it said, Josh Groban:

And I thought, oh nooo poor Josh Groban.

WHAT A YEAR IT’S BEEN…..

It’s all about perspective.

I hope this post helps.

I know this is an old one but if you’ve never heard the backstory on the music video for the song “Here It Goes Again” by OK Go, it is good. SO GOOD.

And we know I love all things random.

Read all about this and their other videos here.

But just watch this if you haven’t ever seen it. It will make you so much happier.

They made their entire music video on four treadmills, I mean COME ON.

I was watching a documentary about MTV recently and rediscovered this gem:

Man, it’s been YEARS since I have listened to Fish Heads!! I could listen to that song all day. It takes a while to get to the song, so fast forward to around the 2 minutes and 20-second mark if you’re impatient.

Happy Hits! (don’t forget the exclamation point!) on Spotify has had me bopping in my chair as I type, as I climb the stairs to unclog a toilet, or as I cry-mop my floors to forget the state of our sorry-ass country.

I also love Coffee Table Jazz on Spotify as well. Just a great low-key playlist for cleaning, chilling, writing, or reading.

By the way, I have a new commenter (say bonjour to Maddie and her French-speaking cat) and speaking of cats thanks to her tip, here is this funky hit that I am IN LOVE WITH. Very upbeat and just the tune we need right now to get us to January.

I remember watching this skit as a child and laughing hysterically. I thought this could bring some joy to you as well:

Speaking of cats part Deux, who doesn’t love a cat who can drive?

I found this little treasure while searching for something stupid, I’m sure. It’s an interview with one of the last survivors of the Titanic from 1985 with Keith Morrison from Dateline fame. But at the time, no one really knew who the hell he was and when it aired on YouTube. I think most of the people in England had no clue who he was either AND THE COMMENTS ON YOUTUBE ARE GIVING ME LIFE.

Listen to her sweet voice while you read the comments if you can. To read the comments, click on the YouTube logo on the video below to watch the video on YouTube and not on my blog, if that makes sense. BUT come back here when you’re done watching because there is more nonsense to be had.

We watched this on Friday night and laughed almost the entire time. I figured you could use a laugh too.

And for my 80’s friends:

I have loved this song for years and had it played as part of our wedding but it was in two of my favorite movies, can you guess which two?

Oh, I will just tell you so that if you’ve never seen them, you have two new movies to watch because shitstorm

Bridget Jones’s Diary and Only the Lonely

Speaking of movies, have you ever seen Muriel’s Wedding? I feel like it’s a good vibe to watch with the atmosphere of this year for some reason. It’s quirky and just something about not having your life together and scream-singing ABBA at the top of your lungs just resonates with me for some reason.

And here is the story behind the movie (25 years later!).

Speaking of scream-singing, that is one of the tips I give in my book for self-care that got me through perimenopause.

It’s a “thing”.

I swear to God.

Scream-singing at the top of my lungs in my car while alone has given me more therapy than, well, therapy.

Here are a couple of songs that I love to scream-sing to but I want some songs that YOU love to scream-sing to as well because I am making a…you guessed it! SPOTIFY SCREAM-SINGING PLAYLIST!

I feel like we’re gonna need one! Come on! You know you want one too!

Here are a few to get you started:

AND WHEN YOU GET ANOTHER PERSON TO JOIN IN?

KISMET.

Who would you add to the playlist?

Speaking of Lada Gaga up there, little know music nerd fact, this song is how she got her name:

It’s a convoluted story but it is indeed how she got her name.

BUT it’s not why I love this song. It’s another amazing song to scream sing to and one of my two favorite Queen songs, so I taught this to Ella one day during homeschool and we called it “music class”. She is kind of obsessed with Freddie Mercury now. I LOVE THAT.

So then it sent me down this amazing rabbit hole of Freddie Mercury facts and little tidbits all about his life when I stumbled on the best part; his love story with Mary Austin.

We all know that Freddie Mercury was a gay man but at first, he hid it and had a relationship with Mary Austin. They were together for years and she was the one who called him on it and eventually they broke up but get this, they stayed friends for the rest of his life; she was even there with him the day he died.

Meet Mary Austin, the Woman Who Stole Freddie Mercury's Heart - Biography

He wrote the song, Love of My Life, for her and when you hear him talk about her, it is incredible. He was definitely gay and attracted to men but his heart loved her. Why is no one writing the screenplay about this love story?

I haven’t yet watched Bohemian Rhapsody as of the writing of this, only seeing the trailer and it looked to be only about the rise of the band Queen. I plan to watch it eventually though and hopefully it tells the story in-depth and not ruin it, as Hollywood tends to do.

If you’ve seen Bohemian Rhapsody, tell me in the comments what the deal is.

Here is an article about their love story written for the website Refinery 29.

Oh and here is my other favorite Queen song and another great scream-sing song:

Do I have a movie to poop your pants to!

My mom was talking about alien encounters one day on the phone with me (you’re jealous of our convos, I know) and she mentioned hearing about this movie. I am too scared to watch this because it is based on real events.

Don’t come at me in the comments about UFOs and aliens. I just learned yesterday that there are people walking around who think that birds don’t exist. That BIRDS existing is a conspiracy theory.

And we wonder why our country is a shitshow?

Speaking of movies:

Take this quiz; the food you choose will reveal whether you’d survive a scary movie or not. (I barely survived and this should not be surprising)

Speaking of quizzes:

Another quiz to see where your COVID-19 comfort level is might make you feel a little better about where everyone else’s comfort level is. Maybe?

And this one was just fun:

Want a fake college roommate? Choose some stereotypical fall things and we’ll give you one.

Mine was Theresa May (Tess May)- She’s from the suburbs of LA, the suburbs of LA, and she attends Pomona College, where her dad’s cousin works in the art department. She hates Starbucks (much to people’s surprise), is a biology major, and will dominate you at badminton. Also, she has soooo many Arctic Monkeys posters, so we hope you like her music.

Pity, she doesn’t like Starbs.

Oh well, I think we can make it work.

Let me know who you end up with in the comments.

My friend Kristen shared this with me recently and it made me smile:

“My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze” is the best quote I think I have heard in many years in reference to parenthood. It hit me in the heart one gloomy September evening during a pandemic. It is such a big task right now, isn’t it?

Even if you aren’t a parent here on Earth, even if you are just keeping yourself going right now and trying to keep your own light in your eyes ablaze. It is very hard to do so right now, isn’t it?

I share these non-sensical, silly, posts because they actually do matter. If I made you laugh just a little bit? Kept the fire ablaze for one moment?

Maybe the next time you see something sweet or kind, share that in your Twitter feed too.

Maybe the next time you see something funny or hysterical, share that in your facebook feed too.

I am not telling you to stop fighting the good fight but I am telling you to also share the good stuff in addition to it.

I will promise to keep sharing my mix of funny and sad and angry and real.

Because there is always something to laugh at. To smile at. To keep the light in your eyes ablaze.

Back to the shitshow.

  1. I love these kinds of posts! Now I have so much to watch this weekend!

Singing at the tops of my lungs in my car has been one of my favorite things to do for as long as I can remember.but as of March it has been saving my life. 😂

You should get paid for writing these. I feel like I sat for a therapy session.

    1. I’m glad I could give you distractions. That’s what I have been calling these kinds of posts; much-needed distraction.

Yes to singing in the car alone! It’s one of my favorite things to do to clear my mind and soul. ❤️

That’ll be $100, pay at the receptionist out front. 😉

  2. I loved Bohemian Rhapsody so much!! Honestly I never knew anything about Freddie Mercury until the movie. I loved their love story, while it was super sad, it was super deep.
It really reminded me of a friend of our family (no he wasn’t a singer) but he was in hiding for what was probably his whole life. I remember so clearly at his funeral that both his female and male “companions” were there. I loved him so much and was just looking at old family pictures this morning. He had the best voice ever and I can still hear it to this day. He was such a big part of my life growing up as he was my sisters’ Godfather♥️

  3. I will have to come back later to actually watch all of these (speed-reading on a break from work) and absorb more fully, but YOU MUST WATCH BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY. You will love it. And yes, it does tell that story. It’s such a good movie.

I appreciate the light and the fun. More than you know.

    1. Oh now I will watch it! You’ve given ME joy with that little snippet! Thank you!

It’s selfish, really. I had a lot of fun putting this together over the past couple of weeks and it was a good diversion from menopause and writing the book. About menopause. 😂

  4. What a great post. I think it took me 4 hours and 19 minutes to read/watch it all. Thanks for that Kari, I actually HAD something to do today, but I did you instead. Well, you know what I mean.
    highlights for Suz:
    I miss the Muppets.
I need to rewatch Father of the Bride cause I loved part 3ish.
Loved the OK Go story; so clever and funny they are.
I’m pooping wrong and Poor Josh Groban.
I totally forgot about Toonses the driving cat; so funny.
The Titanic interview is a must-watch.
    Maddie does leave great comments!!
    Fortune in hilarious.
I need to rewatch Muriel’s wedding; totally forgot about that one.
Scream singing is my favorite activity. When I was getting to the bottom of the list and you asked who I would add, I totally SAID in my head: Queen! And then you added in Queen, so you sole my damn answer.
The movie about Freddie was good and they did touch on his wife which I really loved.
I can’t watch scary movies. I ‘accidentally’ watched The Blair Witch Project years ago and it still haunts me; especially when I’m taking out the garbage at night. SO, I watched that DAMN trailer you shared and I almost SHAT my pants. I hate stuff like that, especially if it MIGHT BE TRUE and when are the owl aliens coming to get me? I’m all sorts of freaked out.
I also got Theresa “Tess” May. So basically, you will be my roommate.

Ok. Now I have to go do the stuff I needed to do four hours ago. 🙂

    1. I love that you did me. That made me day.

I feel like we would’ve made really great college roommates. I never went away to college but if I had, I would’ve wanted you as one of them. WOULD YOU BE MY TESS MAY? That could be our inside joke at parties now. 😉

  5. Wait, did you actually intentionally listen to fish heads? What the hell was that? Sometimes I think I slept thru part of the 80s. I had never heard of the OK song thing. I was nervous they were going to fall off the treadmills. I love Tears for Fears and most of the rest. Big Queen fan. I loved Bohemian Rhapsody. I thought they did a good job of telling his story. Oh and I love Father of the Bride. Will have to watch the rest of thst at some point. I have a paper to write. My dad made us all sit and watch the original.father of the bride movie when my oldest sister got engaged.

    1. YESSS. Funny thing is I don’t remember how I heard it the first time. I think a friend in high school showed it to me or it was on MTV?

I feel like I’m the only person who hasn’t seen Bohemian Rhapsody! Now I need to watch it this weekend.

I love Father of the Bride too. Such a fun and sweet movie.

      I watched the original too!

  6. Wow, there’s a lot to unpack in that post. And I’m not even talking about the poop video. But yes, you have to watch Bohemian Rhapsody…. it dealt quite lovingly with Freddy and Mary’s relationship. And I’m sorry, but if you’re not enjoying peri-menopause? You’re really not going to like the main event. I’ve had raging hot flashes since my hysterectomy knocked me into it full blown all at once. That was 5 years ago and some days life is not worth living. Which is why God invented gin.

      1. Hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, weight gain and bone tiring fatigue…. that’s my life now. Thankfully I don’t have mood swings or migraines, but all in all? being a woman of a certain age sucks.

  7. I’d forgotten about Toonces the driving cat, as one does of course. Suddenly I need to see more SNL to help me put this year in perspective. Or maybe forget about this year. I’ve not seen Bohemian Rhapsody, but the people who like it REALLY like it. When I see mention of Muriel’s Wedding I jump forward in time to the TV show The United States of Tara which starred Toni Collette. Delightfully whacked show.

  8. If I ever needed a post it was this one. Speaking of good things from our childhood being reborn – Jesse and I started watching Cobra Kai on Netflix and it is making me so happy. He’s good friend recommending it to him forever ago (back when there was only one season) but we kept putting it off and I’m so glad we did because we need it NOW.

The world did not deserve Freddie Mercury but I am so glad he existed.

    1. It didn’t get eaten but I am publishing it twice. 🙂

No, it did not but I am too. I am just sad he was taken so soon. I didn’t truly appreciate him when he was alive. Although, I do remember stomping my feet loudly on the floor of the bus to “We Will Rock You” on the bus to make our bus driver mad every week when that song was popular. That is also a good memory. Freddie Mercury would have loved that.

  9. Hmmm. I wrote a comment and I think it got eaten.

Thank you for this. It was very much needed.

May I suggest in the all that is old is new again – Cobra Kai on Netflix? Jesse has a friend recommend it way back in the spring of 2019 but we never got around to it until just recently and now there are two seasons and it’s everything I never knew I needed. It’s just SO good.

    1. My husband is a huge Karate Kid fan and binge-watched Cobra Kai, so I watched it while doing other things but while in the same room. I am not as big a fan but it was fun to see everyone older. That is why I am loving those Josh Gad YouTube revivals of 80s movies so much. It IS so good to see old faces, something about that makes us feel comforted.

And I forgot to add that Unsolved Mysteries is back in October. You will have to share that in one of your posts. 😉

  11. Sure you aren’t psychic? I’m the Maddie with French chatty cat & I needed this post. Chatty didn’t because she exists in the moment (currently making biscuits). Me tho. I’m a wreck and it has nothing to do with the Big C or the Outside World. I’m a wreck because Chatty needs her teeth cleaned under general anesthesia. I learned this in the vet parking lot, waiting for Chatty’s return from her regular vet visit. And this news seems to have used up my last straw. I cannot find it anywhere.

I’ve never done this teeth thing with a cat and Chatty is blooming with health so I’m confused, anxious, and basically reaching for the box marked Doom Scenarios. I know this is irrational (I guess?) but 2020 has not been good for my fam and all I can think is please God not my cat too.

Your sweet, happy post of light brought (more) tears to my eyes. I’m glad you found a Jimmy Smith song for your groove. Music is love and strength and hope. I needed the reminder (my current ear worm is Reflections by Diana Ross & The Supremes… not the most hopeful).

    P.S.
Can I share in your song love?
Yes!!! to that OK Go video! Tears for Fears is my love language & makes me think of Squeeze, Human League, Howard Jones (“And do you feel scared? I do! Things Can Only Get Better!“), whoever sang Take Me On, ten gazillion other childhood anthems, and all things brightly colored & heart shaped.

I went to grad school with a long commute…. my “Playlists to a Scream To” are endless. Have you ever heard Riot Grrl bands (90s era songs may be nothing but screaming – see Bikini Kill Huggy Bear Our Troubled Youth compilation – Huggy Bear samples Peanuts *and* PeeWee). I also enjoyed screaming in foreign languages (Edith Piaf works surprisingly well, also Matteo Salvatore – especially Il Pesci – I have no idea what he is saying but oh my). For laid back *&* hyper rage OOIOO Feather Float album had range. Or there’s always Pixies (UMass, et al) (alt The Breeders Last Splash album).Or Anything from The English Beat (tho that may just be hyper).

When you are tired of raging… curl up with Stevie Wonder Higher Ground. Also Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell You’re All I Need to Get By.

Thx again. Your posts… no words.

    1. Girl? Your comments are so good to me. Not just for me, TO me.

First, much love to your sweet cat. We lost three pets this year so I feel this so much because our pets are family to us. We have been guarding our four-year-old dog like we are the secret service. He is my support animal and one of my best friends, so I get you. Sending good thoughts and prayers into the Universe for Chatty. ♥️

PS Reflections is another great song.

I love 80s New Wave so all of those songs are some of my favorites. Also, I saw Tears for Fears in concert a few years ago and they were better now than they were in the 80s. I loved the hell out of that.

I love that you and I both have playlists like that. I will listen to those groups and add those to my lists as well. I’m a huge music nerd so any time I get new bands to listen to, me is a happy girl.

LOVE Stevie and Marvin. I grew up to Motown. It is my comfort music.

I’m so happy you found my blog. 😘

  12. I am so happy I found your blog too. Your blog and a couple others are my lifelines of hope these days. I’m happy that there are still kind people in the world.

Thx for understanding, praying, sending good vibes, anything & everything for Chatty. I think you & I are on same wave length when it comes to pets. Basically they are not pets. They are pieces of our hearts. I may have possibly designed our house to always have sunshine somewhere just because the cats love sun. Possibly other pet centric choices as well.

I’m so sorry for your losses. Three in such a short time. *weeps* One is devastating. Three? Oh you sweet person. Sending my own batch of prayers and light to protect your pup.

If you like any of my crazy music suggestions I will be tickled. If you are horrified and your ears bleed, I’d understand. 😉 Green that u have seen Tears for Fears live! (!!!) My husband had to tell me that I adore this genre New Wave (me: “New Wave? What’s that?” Also me: “Come Together is by The Beatles?“ Husband: “…”). I just know it makes me feel happy & six yrs old and I magically know all the words. But I will give (almost) anything a chance because different is good. So please continue peppering your blogs with music links. I love your unpredictable suggestions.

Did I mention I’m so happy I found your blog?

    1. SAME. I love the blogs I read too. They are so underrated for helping me get through the past six months.

Pets are family and honestly, more to us because they love us as we are, unconditionally. It is just such a pure love that you can’t find anywhere else, so I understand that completely. That is so funny because our dog is very cat-like; we even joke about it all the time, saying he is part cat. He sits in the sun all of the time and my home is very sun-centered as well! Of course, I need light all of the time too so maybe I am cat-like too? 🙂

THREE losses in 2020- hamster in February, a 14-year-old goldfish in June, a parakeet in July. As if this year wasn’t bad enough.

Different IS good. Music IS everything. I grew up with a dad who wanted to be a DJ and never became one so I guess we got lucky because we were his audience instead and because of that, I have the most eclectic taste in music. He and I could sit in a room and throw out music facts, random knowledge, and entertain each other for hours. In fact, my first ever rock concert was with my dad. 🙂

I am so happy too, Maddie. 🙂

  13. Father of the Bride Part 3???! Omg. Thanks for sharing, loved the first two! I remember when I watched the first (maybe the second one) as a kid and was SO confused over the hot dog bun scene. I was just like, why can’t the dude buy figure out how many weenies he needs and then do the math for the buns? 😀
