I found a bunch of cool writing prompts on Pinterest and thought this might be just enough to take you away from it all for a half-hour journey.
Music is one of my most favorite coping mechanisms and what I qualify as self-care, so I am calling myself your therapist for the day and writing you a prescription for more cowbell.
Er, more music.
I love posts that keep us from dealing with our feelings, don’t you?
Here are my choices.
“A song you like with a color in the title”
Yellow- Katherine Ho (Coldplay originally wrote and performed this, but I like this version better)
I also love this movie.
“A song you like with a number in the title”
Haircut 100- Love Plus One
“A song that reminds you of summertime”
Summertime- DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince
“A song that needs to be played loud”
Lose Yourself- Eminem
“A song to drive to”
Heroes- David Bowie
Ella and I were in the car the other night listening to this with the windows down, and it was lovely.
“A song that makes you happy”
Three Little Birds- Bob Marley
Don’t worry. ‘Bout a thing. Every little thing, gonna be alright.
“A song that makes you sad”
Here Comes a Regular- The Replacements
“A song that you never get tired of”
Tilted- Christine and the Queens
“A song from your preteen years”
Jack and Diane- John Mellencamp
“One of your favorite 80s songs”
I Feel for You- Chaka Khan
“A favorite song to request at a wedding”
Get Down Tonight- K.C. and the Sunshine Band
“Favorite classical song”
Gymnopedie No. 3
“A song you’d sing at a karaoke bar”
I Will Survive- Gloria Gaynor
“A song from your childhood”
The Doobie Brothers- Listen to the Music
I used to dance on the tops of my Dad’s feet to this song. 🙂
“A song you know entirely by heart”
Buffalo Stance- Neneh Cherry
And in honor of a legend, everyone knows this one (and it is a good one):
But my favorite one is this:
Then on Friday, I found my friend Ani’s YouTube channel Fauxdonna and I’ve been listening to her sing this song ever since.
It’s now my favorite song out of these.
Tell me all your favorites in the comments.
How can you not love baby Will Smith? Almost all of these bring back memories, which (this morning) are making me sad for things that have passed. Hard to pick a favorite from your list, but Jack and Diane is a contender.

DRUMS PLEASE!
It was really hard to pick a favorite when it came to the 80s category. So don’t pick! Share all your favorites with me. 🙂

I’m the wrong person to ask about music. I played instruments in school, but as for knowing popular music, or remembering it, or answering questions about it… I dunno. I just go with the flow. If you like the song playing, then it’s fine by me [unless it’s rap or opera which are awful to my ears].

As long as you go with the flow, you are good! You don’t have to know what’s what to appreciate music or to get the effects of music on your soul, that’s for sure. I listen to music most days in the background and it is from Spotify playlists I don’t make, so I have no idea who the artists are and I love that so much because it is unknown to me. 🙂

That’s EXACTLY why I like Sirius. I listen to music by genre, they pick the tunes, I groove on without any fuss.

Yes! That is such a good way to listen to music too!

First of all, thank you for featuring my song and channel here. It’s like being tagged by a celebrity! Also, thank you so much for liking my rendition of that song. Really, it means so much to me. That cow bell sketch, even though it has been over-referenced for the last twenty years is still so freakin funny. It’s funny every time. So, are you going to put together a Spotify playlist so we can listen to all of these songs and think of you? The yellow song link didn’t work for me, but I bookmarked this post so I can start putting together a playlist on my Amazon music with everything you mentioned.

Aww shucks LOL. I am also featuring another song of yours (the John Prine song) in the next tater tot post. My goal for 2021 is to make you a celebrity. I love having goals, it keeps me out of trouble. Plus, you are so incredibly talented my friend. I am so in awe of your musical ability and you know how much I love music. To be able to give that gift to the world is so special and important now more than ever.
I actually have a Spotify playlist LOL, you know me so well. It is titled A Grace Full Life, so if you go on Spotify I guess just search for it? If you can’t find it, let me know and I will send you a link. 🙂

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Bruno Mars cover; she’s awesome.
You and I are on the same page with most of your choices. You know, good taste and all…
Chaka Kahn. (chaka kahn, chaka, chaka) LOVE!
One I would add as it’s my most favorite danceable song is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52iW3lcpK5M {Madge!}
Also, on the top of my list is Return of the Mack….it’s a STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND GROOVE song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uB1D9wWxd2w
I have some favorite sad songs too, But I’m focussing on dancing and joy today.

Ani is so amazing. Ella had an upset stomach on Friday morning and fell asleep on the couch listening to her songs and I love that. My plan is to make her famous. For real. I even have it on my calendar to figure out how to get her music on Spotify. 🙂
OMG, you and I are on the same wavelength and I think I have mentioned this before.
I love those two songs so much and in fact, they are two songs that would get me on the dance floor immediately!
I almost wanted to leave out the sad song but I am one to follow through LOL. But I do love that Replacements song and when I researched the meaning, it actually doesn’t have a sad meaning, so it made me feel a bit better.
It is SUCH a joyful post. Music is SO healing and we need healing!
I am so glad you loved it! 🙂

Some of these songs I’m familiar with and the others I’m not so I can’t wait to give them a listen! We must be on the same wavelength because I’m in the middle of constructing a post about books, TV and music. 🙂

Definitely always think of Summertime when someone says summer music to me! I had a 30 day prompt like this that I almost filled out.. but I’m really not great with songs/titles/ artists.

That is such a great summer song! I was telling my husband yesterday that song takes you back to that year perfectly. So much in that song describes the culture, the atmosphere, what people were wearing. It should be a classroom assignment on descriptive writing at its best. 🙂

I almost came right to the comments to say: YOU KNOW I AM GONNA SUCK AT THIS, RIGHT?
Ha. I ditto Sux. Love all your choices and the ones I recommend will pop up on the radio and I will go: OH THIS IS THE ONE I SHOULDA PUT ON KARI’S COMMENTS.
It’s how my mind works. Admitting it is the first step.
Ani- beautiful voice. OMG. Amazing. How fun.

I almost said at the beginning of the post, Ernie-LOOK AWAY. I kid. But I have all the links so you can listen away when you’re having a crappy day and need a good sad song. Or a good song from the 80s. And so on. 😊

I like that David Bowie’s “Heroes” fits nicely into several categories–a song I know by heart, that makes me happy, that’s great to drive to, and so on.
Oddly enough I can think of at least three They Might Be Giants songs that cover at least as many categories, and even more by The Kinks. I think “Come Dancing” makes everyone happy.
In fact as a Kinks fan I’d like to find a song to fit every category. Something classical might be a stretch, though. Perhaps for that I’d have to go with the oratorio “Oedipus Tex” by P.D.Q. Bach.

I love that! I feel that way about the song as well.
YES. Come Dancing! I think I actually have featured that song in another post! Love that song. So underrated.
Ooh, now you’ve got my curiosity piqued with that Oedipus Tex. Headed to Google. 😂

Okay, I checked it out and I can’t believe I had never heard of Oedipus Tex before! That was so cool. Thanks for the recommendation!
