This was awesome. I had no idea about antidepressants or the gabapentin helping with hot flashes. I too was hoping to avoid hormone therapy because of the breast/ovarian cancer in my gene pool. My Dr. told me last month that I’m in menopause; no more peri for me. 🙂
I’ve been very fortunate. I had hot flashes for a year or two, and they’ve pretty much subsided (aside from hot drinks or red wine, like you with coffee) I might get one or two a week, but they are quick. What I have been taking for the past few years (and I continue to) is Dong Quai Root. It’s known to help with hot flashes. Does it really work or am I just having less? Who knows, but I’m not risking it. I take one a day.
I still do get ‘night sweats’; where I’ll just get hot while sleeping…is that menopause-related or is that Suzanne related? Not sure. I invested in a ‘personal air conditioner’ a few years ago and I love it.

Ooh, that’s a great tip! Natural remedies are great too! I didn’t even mention that in the podcast but I do have that as part of my book. Doctors used to be hesitant about natural remedies but they are beginning to accept them more. Obviously there are some cases where natural doesn’t always work but I feel like if nature works better, why not go that route first?
Night sweats are definitely menopause related. Although, I’ve always run on the warm side at night. But the hot/cold/hot/cold up and down fluctuations that I get now are hormones. 🙄
To be clear, my ass doesn’t itch. It was a sample question. 😂

I’m now post-menopausal and that has a whole new set of “surprises”. (That sounds better than problems, doesn’t it?) Honestly, menopause wasn’t that bad for me. I rarely had hot flashes, but I did get night sweats and still have them. No biggie – a fan to the rescue. Vaginal dryness – estrogen cream to the rescue for that. (Though I was late to discover this, so alert! Alert!) As far as moodiness, anxiety is worse but I’ve been treating that naturally with therapy (in the past; no longer needed), herbal supplements, mediation and yoga. If you want/need me to talk about anything for your book – or even just for yourself – just let me know! 🙂

What a neat resource… of course I wasn’t at all surprised to find that there are none near me unless I’m willing to drive an hour or more. That is one definite advantage you have.

That is frustrating. I am thinking this is a fairly new concept? Hopefully, once this becomes more mainstream, this will be everywhere and not just near larger cities. But if you were having serious issues, it may be worth the drive.

My only story, and it isn’t much of one, is that I thought I’d go through this gradual perimenopause slide into menopause. I’d be ever so aware of the change. Ha! Did not happen. I literally went from having a period one month to being finished with the whole racket two months later. Just over. THEN came the hot flashes and moodiness and hazy thinking as if my mind/spirit was playing catch-up with my body.

On weird hot cereal note, I always loved Gerber Baby Rice Cereal uncooked with a spoonful of sugar on top..as a kid, even as an adult..tried it when I lived with my brother and his kid ate that lol
