Screw It, I’m Eating Tater Tots- Episode 32

Rumi

I once worked with a girl named Rumi who I had no idea shared her name with a famous poet. I just thought her name was lovely. Jalal al-Din Rumi, the poet, has been ringing in my ears for the past several months.

A fellow blogger wrote about him, a friend of mine tagged me in an Instagram post with one of his quotes without realizing how much I liked him, and then I started seeing his quotes everywhere.

Why is the universe directing me to Jalal al-din Rumi? Have you ever heard of him?

To get you started, here is an interesting article:

Well, poop

I’m 51 years old and have yet to get a colonoscopy. Several reasons:

1- I didn’t get one when I turned 50 because of COVID.

2- I have no excuse anymore; I’m just dreading the preparation, therefore I’m postponing it.

3- I don’t have a gastroenterologist. This means I’ll have to go and find one. In addition, I do not have a primary care physician. I rarely get sick, which is a good thing. This brings me to my next question: do you have a primary care physician?

Maybe we should all schedule our overdue colonoscopies on the same day in 2022 so we can commiserate.

Suz mentioned last month a Sesame Street elephant skit that her daughters enjoyed when they were little. It reminded me of this Sesame Street skit that Ella and I discovered when she was little. She and I would burst out laughing at the penguin bride’s voice, and we would sing loudly each time, I’M GETTING MARRIED AT A WEDDINGGGGG.

Am I going to make you watch a seven minute skit? Yes I am. It’s worth it, believe me.

I discovered the above book on my library’s e-book app. It wasn’t on my TBR list, but it’s quickly becoming a favorite. I’m also discovering that I am a Highly Sensitive Person. I’d never heard of it before reading this book.

I’ve always suspected that I was an empath, but some of the characteristics of an empath don’t seem to fit me at all. But this is me.

      1. My husband has had 4 or 5 colonoscopies. His last one a few months ago was the “easiest”…I had read somewhere that if you start eating low fiber, no red meat, basically kind of a bland diet about 5 days before your procedure, you will have a much easier prep. Sure enough, it worked! Much less to clean out (sorry!) and less cramping, etc.

  1. Man, I wish someone had told me how it is about books and commerce when I was a teenager or in my early 20’s. This sentence is gold: “Publishing is a retail industry, not a meritocracy.” I sensed it, which is why I made the career choices I did, but I didn’t really get it until much later. Understanding this brought me much peace as a person who writes for others.

On the topic of being an HSP, you might want to check out Jill Seeger Salahub’s blog: https://thousandshadesofgray.com/ She writes and shares frequently about being an HSP. On Mondays she publishes a weekly list of links that always have such good things in them. I think you’d really like what she shares.

Hope you have a good week 🙂

      1. I’m not! I told the doc that I flat out wouldn’t have the procedure if expected to do the 24hr/1gal prep solution! Fortunately, she uses Suprep, which is evening before + morning off procedure. Just one 16oz glass each time! Buuut, it’s supposed to be followed, 3ach time, by 32oz water within an hour and I’m not physically able to consume that much. However, my daily life is like being on prep soliution (a sadly literal statement) so I’m not concerned!

I’ve heard tale of doctors who offer big doses of laxative pills as prep.

  2. Rumi was *huge* when I was in HS & college. I remember traveling across the country and *bam* Rumi was there too. I love his wisdom & it was also interesting how (it felt like) everyone my age, everywhere (cue teen exaggeration 😉 ) was into him at the time. I’m glad he is still out there, still being heard.

I love love love that movie About Time. Bill Nighy! Other wonderful people! Laughter! Crying! So many good scenes! Love that movie.

Colonoscopy… Haven’t they made little cameras u can swallow? How are those coming along? What’s the timeline on that? Or what about poop? I mean…. Surely they could just look at that right? I really feel like science is not trying here…. Whatever you decide, I hope it goes ok. And remember if you get to 70 (I think?) you’re exempt!

But back to About Time….When you watched it, did you already know the “secret” or did u watch it cold? I watched it & only knew it was a romcom. Omg it was so delightful to know nothing & be surprised. I also love watching that movie with folks who haven’t seen it & don’t know the premise bc it is so cool when they have that OMG! moment.

    1. Bill Nighy is lovely. That movie is made by the same people who made Love Actually, another favorite. I love British films. I feel like I may have lived there in a previous life.

THANK YOU, MADDIE. Why aren’t we able to undergo colonoscopies at home yet? However, Amazon has drones that can deliver your dish detergent in less than 24 hours. WTH. 70 years old…only 19 years to go. Holy shit. Only 19 years to go…

I watched it cold! I learned about it on TikTok, of all places. It was a 30 second video that shared movies that we should watch that will change our perspective on life. I’ll share the rest of them in a future podcast or post.

  3. I have never heard of RUMI. I do like these quotes of his you’ve included here.

I don’t have a primary care physician; each time I make an effort to find one they move away or leave the field altogether within just a few months… maybe it’s me?! I do tend to be a bit difficult and push back, ask lots of questions, avoid any invasive testing, etc.

    1. I’d never heard of him until a few years ago.

I don’t think you’re being difficult; you’re asking the proper questions and maybe making doctors who aren’t very good at their jobs feel inferior. It is your body and you must care for it.

  4. I had the option to do the home colonoscopy called cologuard. Meaning you poop in a container, swab it, put in test tube, add preservative liquid to the container with the poop mail it to a lab in a postage paid box via UPS. I worried endlessly over getting the normal colonoscopy because my wife has gastro problems and she had to do it in her mid 30’s. So, you might want to look into that option.

      1. I think if you have gastrointestinal problems like crons or Gerd or history of colon cancer on your family you can’t do cologuard. I don’t have a gastrointestinal problem or colon cancer history.

  5. Kari, I am the colonoscopy QUEEN. My colon might be more photographed than my face, which is only partially because I’m usually the one taking the photos around here.

Queen status because my celiac disease confused doctors for YEARS. They were looking at the wrong angle for a few decades. Literally. So, the prep was once ungodly. Like I swore I’d rather die than do it again when I was about 23. Now, it is a cake walk. You take a pill every so often and maybe drink something? Things move through you fairly quickly, but you’ve probably already experienced that in your lifetime and you get over it fairly quickly, I’m guessing. After that you’re asleep. Find a doctor that other people you know like. You’ve got this. Plus, you get to eat lots of jello – well certain colors of jello. But jello is party food, so you can fool yourself that this is a fun day.

Oh, I have not heard of Rumi. Should I be embarrassed about that? He’s sounds incredibly profound.

I am very curious about the links, but we flew home late last night and went to bed at 1:30 am and I had to sit early this morning, so I MUST dive into bed and get caught up on my sleep. I’m hosting a group Wed night and I’ve been cleaning and baking and grocery shopping and list making – all while dealing with that fuzzy-head, sleep deprived thing that I hate. I will come back to look at the links later.

I am sensitive, but I wonder if I am highly sensitive. I want to watch that movie now. Well, not now – sleep comes first. I need some good movies to watch. Lately, they are all blah. We did catch a bit of CNNs history of comedy in the hotel and that was interesting/funny.

    1. I’m laughing so hard…there are more pictures of your colon than of your face.

Don’t feel embarrassed. I only learned of Rumi a few years ago. I saw his quotes on Instagram. Nothing more deep than that.

Definitely watch About Time. It is SO good.

  6. Yes, I know of Rumi.
Yes, I have a primary doctor. So do my cats!! Essential for all of us.
My endo+colonoscopy was rescheduled to Jan 20. Doubt you can join in that fast (my GI office is booking 2 to 3 months out).
Is the no prep at home test not an option for you?
Suprep is supposed to be easier than the traditional prep. I haven’t tried it yet. But I know it’s an evening before + morning-of prep rather than entire day before.
If you get the traditional prep (1 gal jug) do NOT listen to the suggestion of drinking 7up between glasses!! It refreshes your taste buds and makes the next glass even worse!!
I’ve only ever been told not to eat anything but jello & broth for the 24hrs before the prep, plus avoid anything with red dye for a day or 2 before that.

    1. I’ve not looked into anything yet, so I intend to begin all of my research in January. This includes finding a gastro as well as a primary care doctor. I mean, you’re right. My dogs have a doctor, so I should have one as well. 🙂

      1. Good docs are hard to find!! I did walk up care for years before connecting to a good and making appts, then following him to a new practice.

My dentist is ridiculously inconvenient but after trying 3 highly rated local dentists, I returned to him.

      2. Oh, friend…how do you not have a Primary Care doctor? Don’t you get regular blood tests for cholesterol, sugar, thyroid, etc? Get your blood pressure taken? You know, the annual physical stuff? 😮

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Every three months I go to my headache doctor, who checks my blood pressure, and my gynecologist checks my blood work yearly. I haven’t seen a primary care physician since perimenopause, so it hasn’t been that long.

  7. Do you want my copy of A Year With Rumi because I’m almost done! How many more days of 2021?? I kid, it’s been good.

My husband gets regular colonoscopies because my FIL had colon cancer. I think the preparation is much worse than the actual procedure. Then again, I think he gets some kind of sedative before the procedure. The preparation has changed in the time he got his first one to now, so maybe it just continues to improve. Anyway, GOOD LUCK. This is going to sound gross but it’s a super good piece of advice: buy yourself some Desitin or other cream that is used for diaper rash and use it before starting the preparation. BELIEVE ME.

The Body Keeps The Score is an excellent book, I loved it.

    1. LOL. I’ll add it to my TBR list and borrow it from the library, but thank you so much! I also wanted to let you know that I found your white chocolate popcorn at Target ONLINE. It arrives next week and I’m so excited!

That is good advice, thank you!

It was a very good book.

  8. As someone with a family history of colon cancer, I am a big proponent of colonoscopies. Then again, I have yet to have my own, so…

Love all the Rumi quotes you sprinkled throughout. The one about pain is sticking with me. Sometimes we focus so much on relieving the pain, we forget the value of living it.

    1. Well, you know, I have family history of something or other, so I need to go as well. Making the appointment is probably the most difficult part.

That is one of the most difficult lessons I am learning. We experience physical pain, one of the first things we want to do is ease it. As someone who suffers from chronic migraines, I understand this deeply. I’ve spent the last year figuring out what the message in my pain is, and it’s profound.

  9. I’m enjoying the Rumi quotes.
My GYN gave me several Gastro names to choose from, maybe start there? It really wasn’t as bad as I’d anticipated. Sure, you shit all day, but it’s not like we don’t already do some of that. I had lots of popsicles and jello-I really wasn’t starving as I’d anticipated. I’m a bear when I’m hungry and everyone survived.
Found looks so good! And About TIME! Wasn’t Rachel Mc Adams also in the Time Travelers Wife? Maybe I remembering it differenty.
And Jagged! They all are up my alley. I’m a big fan of Alanis, but ‘you oughta know’ that already.
You quoted Suz after Rumi. You need a Check-Up from the Neck Up. *giggle*

    1. You’re allowed to eat popsicles and jello? I didn’t know that! So it’s not so horrible after all.

Found is SO good. I’ve never seen the movie Time Traveler’s Wife. Should I watch it?

I see what you did there with Alanis.

You’re right up there with Rumi. 🙂

  10. I have yet to have a colonoscopy either, or a mammogram for that matter. I’m ultra healthy as well and while I do have a yearly physical, when they start advising this test and that test my eyes tend to glaze over.

  11. Oh yes, I’m familiar with Rumi. I think I have a book or two of his around here somewhere. Or I used to. Maybe I read them and then donated them? Anyway, I love a lot of his quotes.

I’m going to be the big six-oh in August and I’ve never had a colonoscopy either! I know, I know. My PCP (yes, I have one – same one I’ve had for about 25 years) has been not-so-gently reminding me every year at my annual physical. I’ve seen my husband go through four or five of them (he has colon cancer in his family) and it’s not pretty. The prep, that is. It’s what keeps me from doing it myself. I can’t even drink juice, for Pete’s sake, let alone that foul-tasting stuff that will probably have me gagging and puking as well as sitting on the toilet all evening…

I’m definitely a highly sensitive person – have known that for years. I can’t stand bright lights, loud noise, get overwhelmed in crowded places, am very picky about the material of my clothing…basically stick with cotton or anything else soft. Cut all the tags out of my shirts. Can’t watch the news or any violent or scary TV or movies, etc etc.

    xoxo

    1. I can’t believe you’ll be 60 years old. You and Brian look like you’re in your 40’s, which is a testimonial to how you live and eat. When are you writing that cookbook? 🙂

We have a genetic something or other, so I definitely need a colonoscopy. 😦

Our HSP link, I believe, is one of the reasons we get along so well. XOXO
