Get Your Own Version of a Daybed

I had planned to keep this for a tater tot post, but I couldn’t wait any longer. In the last tater tot post, I had mentioned that our old patio furniture had collapsed practically on top of me.

Then, in the rant section of that tater tot post, I talked about how expensive patio furniture is.

As a side note, the comments I received were very helpful. That has nothing to do with what we bought; I just wanted to tell you all how nice you are. Fine job.

Anyhoo, we made a decision.

We got a daybed.

A big part of our spending conundrum was that we never ate outside at our patio table, so why were we looking at 800 dollar patio table and chairs?

“Buddy, come join me on the lanai…” (I know, it’s not a lanai)

We also didn’t want to spend $1,000 on an outdoor family room set for the patio when our indoor family room furniture has holes in it.

So one day, we found a daybed in an article about inexpensive patio furniture.

A daybed? Hmmm, we’d never thought of that before.

To be clear, we bought this on Wayfair with a coupon code, and it was going to be a lot less than patio furniture. But after taxes and shipping (and assembly…long story), it probably cost as much as the table without the chairs.

But it makes sense. We like to hang outside with our dogs, kids, and whoever else wants to visit. I can read books out here and do soul homework out here. This is so much more our vibe than a table and chairs.

Anna and I were lying on the daybed the other night, talking until it was time for bed.

Ella sits on the daybed with the dogs as soon as she wakes up in the morning.

This daybed has been one of the best purchases we’ve made for our home.

I search for life lessons in everything, and I remember feeling for a long time that I should decorate and buy items for my home for others. For example, acquiring a patio table so that guests may sit outdoors when we host them. That is something I no longer do.

If you have the option, get your own version of a daybed.

  2. Awesome! A great idea to buy furniture that suits your life and style and actual usage. I see so many of these outdoor living room setups and they look so cozy but I wonder…Last time I bought patio furniture I passed over the love seats and sofas and opted for 4 deep comfy armchairs instead as me and my friends will pick the individual seating EVERY. TIME. If given the choice. Not good with sharing, I guess 🤣

  3. That daybed looks so ideal. Comfy, fun and a great way to enjoy the outdoors. We have two chaise and half lounge chairs that we bought when our kids were young. They are wide enough for two people to use. We moved them to AZ and I haven’t used them once because the cushions need to be redone. You’re motivating me to finally do that!

  6. OMG, I am in love!! I have never seen one of these before. I think if I had one of these, I’d never want to get out of it! Does it come apart easily to store for the winter?

    I’ve been wanting one of those wicker swinging chairs that hang from a metal hook on a stand. Like a sitting hammock. When we stayed at an air B&B in CA a couple of years ago, they had two of those on the patio and that’s where Brian and I spent every morning. Now you have me re-thinking our patio when we replace our furniture. We currently have a patio table with a wicker settee and two rocking chairs (that are falling apart). We rarely have company out there, but the two of us do have dinner out there sometimes. Maybe we could get two of those swinging chairs and put a small round table in-between them? You have given me a lot to think about!

    2. I so agree with both of you! We never got patio furniture because… we never used the patio for meals, etc., ,and it turns out that in all the years we’ve lived in this house we never missed it. And it saved us having to replace it. But that DayBed/Comfort Cocoon. Now you have us thinking…

  11. Love, Love, LOVE it: it’s a comfort cocoon! Or is it a cocoon of comfort? Either way. LOVE it. What a spectacular idea! I’m thinking that if you put a netting on it (night bugs), it could be a wonderful night-bed in the cool summer nights. And what an incredible way to watch a lunar eclipse: were you able to do that from your Comfort Cocoon?

  14. A daybed! What a great idea! It looks like the perfect place for reading, so snuggly and comfy. I know what you mean, we have a table and chairs for our yard and…well, I guess we’ve used it a few times over the years, but I’m not sure what our per-use cost would be.

  15. I love that “daybed” is now going to be my metaphor for making our house function for how we really live. It’s why we have reading chairs in our kitchen (one of which I’m sitting in right now) and a dining table in our living room.

    I’ve struggled with our backyard outdoor space, not really landing on the right solutions. Eating outside is rarely as nice as it looks in blog/magazine photos, is it? (Bees, flies, heat…) Appreciate the invitation to think outside the patio box.

  17. Kari this idea is the coolest! Also it is so so you somehow. What a fantastic decision. Reminds me a bit of hammocks. Remember hammocks? Growing up all my friends had hammocks- either on trees or porches or those enormous free-standing boat-like ones. In the summer we lived in those hammocks. I can still hear the comforting creek of the hammock strings as we lazily swayed and read endless horse books. 🙂

    Oh! I had a Kari moment the other day! I was buzzed by an inquisitive hummingbird! We don’t have feeders so I assume he was just randomly passing by…. Anywho, totally reminded me of you! ❤️

      One of my friends has a hammock in her back yard! This does remind me of the calm sleepiness of a hammock!

      I love that you were reminded of me by a hummingbird! There are just 12 days till I can feed the birds. But who’s keeping score? 😉

  18. Oh, I love this. I love the pictures with the dog and the lights. So cozy. Coach sat on one of our patio chairs the other day and it ripped. Good grief. Since our appliances are staging a sit-in right now, not interested in replacing our patio set. So glad you discovered something that works for you.
