Screw It, I’m Eating Tater Tots – Episode 47

If you’re new to my blog, welcome! Here is an explanation of the tater tot post.

Margaret

You’re going to love this news if you grew up reading this book:

Judy Blume was present throughout the filming process, as evidenced by the trailer. Also? It comes out on my birthday. 🖤

Prompts no more?

I’m disappointed that WordPress no longer offers prompts. Someone must’ve complained. Possibly you? Well done, ruining it for everybody. 😂

But the Universe must have sensed my sadness because this TikTok appeared in my feed around the same time:

Oof

The question is: tomorrow you die and you are standing at the gates of whatever after life you believe in, and they tell you that before you transition, we get to send you back to earth for five minutes. Only thing is, you can’t see your family or friends because seeing you after you die will traumatize them. So, where are you going?

At first, I considered visiting a place I’d never visited before (the list is long).

Then I had the idea to go somewhere beautiful and spiritual.

Then I realized I just wanted to be at home. Five minutes more. But I couldn’t possibly traumatize my family, remember?  But she didn’t say anything about traumatizing my dogs, so I chose to spend five minutes snuggling with them in our backyard.

What is your answer?

Kringle

I recently learned about the Trader Joe’s Customer Choice Awards. The results can be found here.

But I must point something out. The Danish Kringle was the first runner-up for dessert.

If you’re wondering what a Kringle is, the pastry’s makers can explain it better than I can.

But, Trader Joe’s does not make Danish Kringle. They only sell Danish Kringle.

Danish Kringle is from Racine, Wisconsin, and we are fortunate to live less than an hour away from its birthplace.

Kringle can be found in almost any grocery store here, but there are Kringle bakeries nearby that carry a wide variety. I might have to go on a field trip soon because now I’m craving Kringle…

Have you heard of or eaten Kringle? If so, what is your favorite flavor? My favorite flavor is cherry.

Big Bang Theory

Melanie and I were discussing the smell of burnt hair in the comments section of the 100 Things I Don’t Love post, and I told her that the reason I don’t like the smell is because of all the hair I burned with my curling iron in the 1980s and 1990s to get my big bangs.

I said big bangs.

Heh heh heh.

Melanie said that she did not remember big bangs in the 1980s or 1990s, so I mentioned that I would provide evidence

Allow me to explain visually why I dislike the smell of burnt hair:

circa 1989 (not my best work)

circa 1992 (someone else’s work)

Also 1993 (just right)

  1. First, I like the photos of younger you. Talk about snapshots in time. Second, during my five minutes I’m going to a public library, maybe the Library of Congress, and I’m going to drink in the ambiance and the beauty of so much learning in one place.

Going off to read about how Ikea names their products, badly would be my immediate response, but I must keep an open mind.

  2. Actual text exchange between me and my brother on 11/13/22, after he sent me a pic of Danish Kringle:

    Scott: Good shit. Thanks Wisconsin!
Mark: What is it? Some kind of pastry?
Scott: It’s Kringle, silly. Mom used to make it. Trader Joe’s has it this time of year.
Mark: I don’t remember Kringle. Had to Google it.
Scott: You’re in Kringle Kountry now son! Learn to love it.
Mark: Ha. I’ll be on the lookout.

After that convo, I did in fact recall my mom making Kringle around Christmas time most years, but I had no idea it originated in Wisconsin.

      1. Audiobooks totally count as reading! I’m a teacher and librarian (or used to be), so just take it from me on this one. 🙂 I don’t often feel I have time to sit and read a book, but I listen when I’m driving or doing house chores. It’s my best way to experience books now.

      2. I’m getting a pretty close-up look at how things are (for now, anyway) in Sweden, and it just makes so much more sense. Sigh. I understand the overwhelm. There’s so much right now. Take care of yourself.

  3. Kari, it’s so ironic you shared this movie trailer because I found it a few weeks ago online and immeditely thought, “I can’t wait to see this!!!” Looks like so much fun. And what a GREAT cast!

LOVE your answer to the question! Mine would be to have a big slice of a margherita pizza and a several sips of red wine. I’d die happy! LOL

No, never hear of or seen Kringle in Trader Joe’s, and I shop there at least twice a week. However, I saw Kale & Cashew Pesto is on their list and that’s one thing I do purchase. It’s amazing!

Those photos of you are FAAAAAAAABULOUS! I was a working hairstyist back in the 80s/90s, so I clearly remember those bangs!!!

I noticed on your reading list a book about Reiki. I’m actually a Reiki practitioner. I was certified way back in 1997. It’s an amazing energy healing modality.

FUN, FUN post, my friend!! Have a terrific week!

    1. I was thrilled as well! Also, I agree with the cast. Judy Blume obviously chose everything, which is why it looks so good.

Now that I’ve heard everyone’s responses, I’m wondering if I should change mine. OR, add some food! I’m going to cuddle with my dogs while eating tacos. 🤣

Ooh, I’ve never seen that pesto at Trader Joe’s before, but I’ll look for it the next time I go! I enjoy those lists because they allow me to experience new things.

When a friend mentioned spiral perms, I was immediately transported back to 1986. I had so many perms in the 1980s that I’m surprised I still have any hair on my head.

RON! I’m studying to become a Reiki practitioner! Oh my goodness, how similar we are! I’ve been wanting to do this for the past two years. I’m finally working to make this a reality. I’m happy to know we have this in common. ❤️

Have a wonderful week as well. I am truly grateful for you.

    2. First time I see the trailer myself, thank you for sharing it — I remember relishing the book as a young(er) girl 😀 And thank you for the callout of the “6 inventors who gifted their inventions to humanity” ❤

I'm curious: do you think loved ones would be traumatized by another 5 minutes of live-again you, or would they be really happy, like your dogs would be? 🙂 I'm hoping for happiness…

I've not tried Trader Joe's Kringle but I LOVE their Dark Chocolate Honey Mints (which are the 3 ingredients in those delectable treats), just beware: they are HIGHLY addictive 🙂

Agreed on the FUN FUN FUN (extra one for emphasis) post! What would your answer to the quote be about how old would you be if you didn't know how old you were?

      1. It was a book that made most of us girls feel like an adult finally understood what we were going through at the time. It’ll be exciting to see it come to life on the big screen. And I really enjoyed that blog post, so thank you for writing it. ❤️

I’m hoping for happiness, especially if we can share some good news about what death is really like.

I’ve never seen those at Trader Joe’s, but I’ll definitely try them!

I don’t feel a specific age, but I do feel younger than I did five years ago, which is encouraging. So, how about you?

      2. Thank you for your kind words: it was my way of paying homage to (sadly) unsung heroes. How many of us remember their names? I’m doing what I can to remember them, and help others do the same… So, thank you, again, for that!

The Trader Joe’s chocolate-minty delights come in a small bag that sometimes gets hung between other, more prominent, items so I can see how it’d be easy to miss, but it shouldn’t be 🙂 Here’s a photo of what it looks like (from the web, not mine)

What an AWESOME feeling, to feel younger than you did five years ago, it’s hugely encouraging. I find that I feel “differently” at different times. I often feel like I’m in my early 30s (hey, why not? 🙂 ), but sometimes I feel “old” and the difference between those feelings is striking…

      3. I’ve seen them before! It’s funny how you pass by things and never pick them up. I’m going today, so I’ll look for them!

Do you notice why you feel older on those days? What is causing you to feel that way? Just bodily sensations?

  4. I still have traumatic flashbacks regarding the sausage-roll bangs lol.

Five minutes for me would be a pass. I can’t imagine it would lead to anything but regret.

    Those are some excellent quotes.

    1. Sausage roll! That’s exactly how it looked! 🤣

I fully agree. Five minutes is simply not enough time.

I was extremely fortunate to come across all of these quotes within the last month. It makes me so happy to share them with others.

  5. WordPress has prompts?! I never knew that. I have never heard of a Kringle but I’m pretty sure I’d love it. I too remember the big hair and curling irons. I used to get it nice and hot; curl the hair and then spray it while still in the iron. That sizzle… what were we thinking??

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Well, it did have prompts…for a month. Maybe there’s a way I can get them back. I’ll look into it.

It’s like a very thin round pie.   It’s very yummy.

And we’d ruin our curling irons in the process! AND this was before Pinterest provided us with instructions on how to remove burnt hair and hairspray from our curling irons! 🤣

  6. The Judy Blume books meant so much to me as a young teen and I know my own daughters felt the same way. Yes, I remember having those bangs that were curled. It took me a long time to switch to a larger diameter curling iron barrel. Your young adult photos are a beautiful step back in time.

I’m familiar with the kringle, probably because I’m familiar with all baked goods! It resembles the king cake my husband gets every year shipped from New Orleans as a gift. Except instead of a filling, there’s a plastic baby inside. LOL.

I love that you love DMB like I do. Big Eyed Fish is one of my favorites by them. Happy Monday!

    1. Her books “saw” us when many adults did not.

When I look at those photos, I can hardly recognize that girl.

I’ve never had a king cake, but I’ve heard of them. That is not at all like Kringle. 🤣

I love their music. Happy Monday!

  7. First of all: BANGS. I also had gigantic bangs in the late 80s/ early 90s. It was just what we did back then! Spiral perms and gigantic teased bangs. My friends and I would always have a mini bottle of Salon Selectives in our lockers in case of bang emergencies. Dear god.

I love Judy Blume so much. I don’t know how I feel about the movie adaptation though! I recently reread her books as an adult and they are just so good. I didn’t realize how much of AYTGIMM was about religion – I just didn’t remember that part at all.

I love those quotes, as usual, and I must have started following Something Good because of you – I have been following her for a while but wasn’t sure how I “found” her.

    1. SPIRAL PERMS. I’d forgotten about those. I can still smell the perm solution… And I remember keeping back-up hairspray in my locker for bang emergencies. I said bang emergencies.

That book was a huge part of my puberty. Judy was present for the entire shoot and they consulted her on everything, so I think the movie will closely follow the book.

Rita led me to her blog years ago. I absolutely love this community.

  8. I’m spending my five minutes back on Earth walking a dog. I mean, I prefer it to be *my* dog, but I’m not that picky. I’ll volunteer to walk a dog for the Humane Society or be dogsitting or whatever. I just want it to be me, my dog, and preferably a lovely trail by a lake.

I don’t think Kringles are that good. I want them to be, but the icing ALWAYS compresses the pastry and the pastry ends up all doughy and yucky. That’s my two cents from someone in Wisconsin who always orders Kringles for fundraisers and is always disappointed.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. I love that idea.

Have you visited one of the Kringle bakeries? I haven’t tried them yet, but I want to. I’m wondering if I can just get a slice of Kringle? I dislike having to purchase an entire Kringle when I only want a slice of a flavor. There should be a Kringle flight option. 😊

  9. I can’t to that 5 minute exercise. Too emotionally charged for me right now.
I loved the video of the goose and the guy. Such a cute, heartwarming story. I really want to see the Amber movie, but darn it – we don’t have that streaming service. Can shows and movies start to be on the networks again? Remind me what was wrong with that system? I don’t think I’ve ever had a kringle and now that I have celiac, I can’t. They do look very yummy. The bangs from the 80s were something, weren’t they? I think I’ve shared that my one and only perm was done at Main Street, now Kohls. My hair was so short. I wish the woman would’ve told me to come back when my hair was longer, but instead she used granny size perm rods and I looked SO silly. Sigh. Off to check out Jill’s post.

    1. I completely understand. 😘

It was an interesting movie. Of course, it’s heartbreaking, but Amber’s mother is a truly inspirational human being.
In terms of networks, I agree with you. I wish there was a single place to watch everything that wasn’t a monopoly. For example, if you want to watch Netflix one night but don’t have a subscription, you can do so. It shouldn’t have to be that difficult or expensive. Doesn’t greed take the fun out of life?

OMG, I forgot about the hair salons in Main Street! You’ve just jogged my memory! Our store still had a salon from its Main Street days when I started working for Kohls in 1989.

    1. Ugh, I accidentally hit submit! As I was saying…

The dinner party question about having 5 more minutes on earth…ugh, that’s agonizing! Right now I’d have to say either sitting on the rocks at Clark Square Park in Evanston, overlooking Lake Michigan, or walking along the beach of the Pacific in California, with my feet in the water.

Love those photos of you with the big bangs! NOW I remember, lol! In the early 90’s, I had long hair with a spiral perm and those big bangs. lol

The minute I saw your book list and saw, “The Wild Edge of Sorrow”, I knew it sounded too familiar. I couldn’t remember if I read it or had it on one of my bookshelves. I looked in a spot on one of my shelves where I have books on grief and sure enough, there it was! I just put it in my reading pile.

I read Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow not too long ago (had forgotten to put it on Goodreads)…it was pretty good.

The Danish Kringle…I buy the almond one at Trader Joe’s at Christmas. We have that plus my breakfast casserole on Christmas morning. That Kringle is so bad for you (don’t read the ingredient label, lol!) but SO good. Brian and I have a couple of pieces, then I send the rest of it with him to work, cuz I would eat the whole dang thing.

      1. Melanie, those are two wonderful ideas. I absolutely love both of them. ❤️

You’re the third person to bring up spiral perms. The perm solution smell is still lingering in my nose. I’m not sure how any of us still have hair.

I’m so glad you have the book! It’s a very healing read for me. We’ll definitely talk about it over coffee.

I’d eat the entire thing as well. I wish they sold slices rather than the entire ring. I’m curious if the Kringle bakeries have that option… I’ll have to look into it.

I did that years ago and would like to go on to Reiki 2, but I haven’t had the opportunity yet. I do know of someone who is certified to teach these classes and attune, if you’re interested. More to talk over when we meet for coffee?

  11. I tend to agree with the commenter who said they’d pass on the 5 minutes. Unless I felt I’d left something on a sour note, then I’d want to say sorry (and possibly remind them I love them). I wouldn’t have to see them, just go back & write a note that they could find after my 5 minutes is up.

And I just adore the story of Kyle & Mike – that goose is simply fab 🙂

    1. So…my  journal prompt for this morning was, “How would my life be different if I forgave them?”
I’ll be vague because I’m not ready to discuss this in detail, but I’m filled with regret as a result of a situation like this. So maybe I would  return to Earth and apologize, or tell the person that I understand their feelings and that everything is fine. That kind of thing. It corresponds to your wonderful idea of leaving a note. ❤️

Isn’t that such a wonderful little story?

  12. If I can get a minute, I’m coming back to this post (that I am already late to!) because there are so many things I want to explore! Thank you for putting these together. But I’m popping in quick to say that I LOVE that Margaret is being released on your birthday! And I wasn’t feeling too excited to see it–because I loved the book so, because I was afraid they’d modernize it too much–but the trailer really makes me want to. At the same time it makes me feel a little funny that Rachel McAdams (who I really like) is now in Mom roles. (Time marches on…)

And also: I LOVE the pictures of your bangs. I never had the big bangs, but so many of the people I love did. Yours were epic. 🙂

Gotta go skate, but I know what I’m reading with my lunch later.

Thank you for thinking that my bangs are epic. I never thought they were compared to some of my friends. Now that I look back at them, I realize they were. I wish I still had my old driver’s license photos, because I had some serious bangs in those.

It makes me extremely happy that you will read this later.

      Have fun skating!

      1. Skating was totally therapy this morning. (I had to take my daughter to the airport, and she will be gone for about 5 weeks, and I had some feelings.) But so glad to come back to this! I signed up to write letters; I saw something somewhere this week about not feeling as if we have to respond to everything in the world. Writing is a thing I can do. Reminds me of when I used to send my grandma a hand-made card each week. I also completely agree with the piece on school lunch. Our current practices are so wrong! When I was in charge of my district’s libraries, I began referring to loss of books as “the cost of doing business.” The things we typically did in response to loss created reasons for kids not to check out books–the opposite of what we existed to do! Lunch (and breakfast) should be the cost of doing business for public schools. We know (we know!) that kids cannot learn when they are hungry or feel threat. Feeding them not only takes care of a physical need, but it shows caring, which creates feelings of safety. Removing stigma shows caring. I wish we could just be more kind and logical and less obsessed with figuring out who we think deserves things.

OK, stepping of soap box now….

      2. Oh, my friend. We think in such similar ways. I was just talking about it with Ella on the way to school this morning. About how good things begin with one person. And yet other times, I get bogged down in feeling overwhelmed when it comes to ways to help others.

Writing is something you can do and should continue to do. 😘

Thank god the 90s Vidal Sasson (if you don’t look good, we don’t look good) Stick Straight Hair Bob/Lob (think Claire Danes My So Called Life) came early to my town. *That* look my hair could achieve. I did NOT complain to WordPress about the prompts, but I am glad they are gone! I’m sorry you miss them, though — too bad there isn’t a way to turn that feature on or off depending on your preference!

  16. Kari – Why what appears to me to be so much about grief in this post? Is everything OK?
On a related subject, I recently had an epiphany and came to realize that I am still grieving the loss of my marriage, as opposed to the loss of my mom. The former was a surprise while the latter was not. Also, death is a lot more final than divorce, at least from my perspective.
In both cases, I have gone through stages of grief which are similar between the two in all that I’ve read. In any of your reading on the subject, have you come across anything that deals with this difference? So far, I think I’m just looking at it as adding on a couple of steps to the process, like maybe forgiving and/or forgetting. Those may be part of the acceptance stage. Maybe because Mom’s death was expected I’d already done that with her. I’m really struggling with that re my divorce because, if my ex did any of that at all before he moved on to the next wife, he hasn’t bothered to share any of it with me. Then again, though, if I ever get there vis-a-vis him, which I would mainly do for my daughters’s sake, I don’t expect to share that with him, either!

    1. I am good.  I’ve been working through some grief over the last year, but I’m doing well overall. I’m also dealing with a personal issue that I can’t really discuss here. Nothing life-changing, but it is showing up on my blog in the form of quotes, etc.

I believe we all do not give ourselves enough time to grieve. We don’t let it go until it’s completely gone (if such a thing exists). I believe that telling ourselves or others how to grieve or that our grief should feel differently because one is “bigger” than the other undermines healing.

I understand your feelings about your mother’s death because you expected it, whereas your husband’s exit was unexpected. We can’t prepare for that loss because we hope or believe that their love will never disappear, but we know that death is always imminent. I highly recommend the book I shared about grief. If you read it, let me know your thoughts. Sending you a big hug. 😘
