Humor, Life, Things I Want to Remember

things i want to remember – part 35

if you’re here for the first time, welcome! you’ll be able to find the other parts of this series here.

1- favorite beatle: george harrison; favorite brady: bobby; favorite monkee: mickey; favorite friend: phoebe; favorite muppet: kermit.

2- our town had a frisbee golf course installed in the woods near our home. i never see people playing. there must be a need for it because they put it in. wait a second, i just realized our town has two frisbee golf courses! who is playing all of this frisbee golf??

do any of you play frisbee golf?

3- remember when they would move the “bad kid’s” desk into the hallway? i feel like that wasn’t really a punishment.

4- why are blankets at yoga studios always scratchy?

5- i knew my kids were getting sick when their breath smelled like rubbing alcohol.

6- do you remember the mime couple from the 70s, shields and yarnell?

7- when i still went to church, i managed their social media. they liked my work so much that they asked if i could help with their website too. i didn’t know how to do that, but i said i could create a blog for them instead and save money instead of having internet fees. well, the minister let the church website lag, and i failed to mention to him that he needed to pay for the name/domain.

guess who swooped in and bought it?

a porn site.

i didn’t do their social media for much longer after that, i don’t think.

8- i think comedians make up hecklers. like, they are someone they know planted in the audience, part of the bit they do.

9- many years ago, i tagged along with a friend to interview jaimie laurita—if you’re a real housewives of new jersey fan, you know him as caroline’s brother. i was just there to take pictures, and got to see the home he shared with his husband, which also appeared on the show when he and rich got married

he was a really nice guy, and i’m grateful i got to meet him—and to spend the day with my friend jen. it made me think of all the people i’ve met through blogging and the experiences i’ve had, and how grateful i am for them.

he also has a moscato called bello boy. i thought it was discontinued, but it’s still around in some places. it used to be my favorite, and if offered now, i wouldn’t turn it down. definitely worth the headache.

just another little thing i want to remember…💜

  1. Oh goodness — I am laugh/cringe-ing at the church website thing.

I think my favorite Muppet is Grover. Probably because my daughter loved him so much when she was small. Plus, he is darling and beloved even though he makes a big mess of things most times, which feels relatable and comforting.

One famous person I met was Nick Arrojo, whom I knew from the reality makeover show What Not to Wear. He gave me a fantastic haircut.

Frisbee golf is still a thing?! I have never done it, but I feel like it was all the rage when I was in college / grad school.

    1. My friend Rebecca always laughs so much when she remembers when I turned my church site into porn. I can only imagine the little old ladies trying to go to the site for the bulletin…

Grover! I do love Grover—he’s a close second to Kermie.

OMG! You got a haircut from Nick Arrojo?? Suzanne, that is so cool!

It’s popular here for some reason.

  2. Oh noooooo about the church website!!! Honestly.

I have never played frisbee golf. I don’t have a favorite Beatle, Brady, Monkee, or Muppet. (I love all the Muppets too much to choose just one.) But my favorite Friend is Phoebe.

I love this list of things you want to remember!

    1. I knowwwww. I was mortified at the time.

I do love all of the Muppets too—such a happy childhood show. Phoebe is just the best, isn’t she?

I love that you love them. 💜

    1. Yes! I looked it up—disc golf is the official name, but around here they call it frisbee golf for some reason. Maybe I can convince my husband to start playing (he loves real, expensive golf 🤣).

  3. Love these posts, Kari. I never liked the Beatles, so no fave there. Fave Brady: Marcia, Fave Friend: Chandler, Fave Muppet: The Swedish Chef. I completely forgot about Shields & Yarnell!!!! It was so cool to see them again.

I knew my son had strep throat because he would suddenly vomit once out of nowhere. Like, he’d be running around and playing and all of a sudden….BLAH! I’d get out a flashlight and look at his throat and sure enough, it would be beet red and I’d have to take him to the doctor. He never once complained that it hurt. Learned that he was considered a ‘carrier,’ whatever the hell that meant. We had about 4 years of all of us getting strep constantly. True headache.

The church story was funny, but did the church have a porno sounding name because WTH? At our previous church, I did the church newsletter, but this was around 1991 and I didn’t have a computer at home, so I had to go into their office in the evening and often, my husband was working late, so I had to take my oldest daughter with me. One time, she was playing with the desktop phone and I wasn’t paying attention. She managed to call 911!!! The police came and fortunately, one of them was a church member. I was so embarrassed. I think I quit that volunteer job not long after.

I only watched RHONJ for the first 6 seasons or so, so I only vaguely remember the brother of Caroline. A blogger who I used to follow (he quit blogging because of hate he received online – sad!) met Theresa once! That always cracked me up because Joe was in his late 60’s at the time and about the least likely person to be a fan of the show! Haha!

    1. I love these posts too. It’s been a while, so I thought it was time. (I also love Chandler—he’s my second favorite.)

Anna would vomit when she had strep too! I don’t miss the strep days at all.

No! I swear the people who buy these domains just wait for an opening and BOOM. I don’t know how it was resolved. I was pretty embarrassed when it happened, even though it technically wasn’t my fault.

OMG, why was he getting hate? Because of his opinions of the show?

  4. A PORN SITE!!! Well, now I’m wondering just who would go to a church-sounding site to look for porn. Ew, I think I thought of something.

I love Kermit too, although I feel a kinship with Miss Piggy. I used to have a Miss Piggy doll when I was a kid and I loved her so much I referred to her as my sister. Then we were at church and some older person spoke to me about my brother, at which point I said I had a sister too. This person asked where my sister was and I said we put her in my closet when we came to church. My parents got investigated!

    1. LMAO- I’m laughing so much right now…..🤣

No way!! That’s awful! Also, I never would’ve learned this if I hadn’t mentioned my favorite Muppet—and accidentally gotten my old church involved in porn.

  5. Favorite Muppet – Grover. (I used to read “The Monster at the End of This Book” to my boys ~ and I’d read it in a Grover voice, lol.) Favorite Brady – Marcia Marcia Marcia!

Never played Frisbee golf, but Phil used to play it with his friends.

Yes on the yoga blankets! I have one at home but only use it to sit on when doing seated yoga positions.

I was curious about why your kid’s breath might’ve smelled like rubbing alcohol when they were getting sick (I’d never heard of that!) and it’s from being in ketosis (from eating less and/or dehydration).

Why do I not remember Shields & Yarnell? I don’t recall every seeing them. I don’t like mimes though, so I guess I didn’t miss anything. ha ha

That is *hilarious* about your church’s website turning into a porn site! Great story.

Sorry, have no idea who Jaimie Laurita is. (Never watched any Housewives shows.) Cool that you met him with Jen though….

That’s how I first met you – when you and Jen came to the Midwest blogger’s meetup! :-)

    xoxo

    1. I used to read that book to the girls! In fact, I have a bookmark with that book on it! Love it.

Aww—he did? I love that, friend.

I wonder if it’s because they need to be thick to sit on? I just don’t know why they have to be so scratchy.

      KETOSIS! YES! That makes sense.

I’ll never forget the day we met! I’m so grateful for Jen taking me to Naperville that day. 💜

  6. I do not play frisbee golf and likely never will, because I associate it with bullies who think they own the park. This sounds terrible, but it really happened that I used to sit on a bench and read at a beautiful park back in Miami, but these players intentionally intimidated me to get out of the way of their game.

Love George Harrison, and like GenX only just now remember Shelds and Yarnell!

    1. Why is there always someone who ruins things for everyone? Gahhh. I’m sorry that happened to you.

I love remembering something from our childhood and then having others remember it too. It’s so much fun to reminisce. 💜

      1. I may get over it and find myself playing, but for now when I encounter a frizbee golf park, it’s a no. It’s just another thing where there need to be manners. :)

  7. I love how you remember such details. I feel I do the same. I can remember things like it was yesterday, or I don’t recall ANYTHING about something my siblings did. It’s weird! Like other readers, I cracked up over the church porn site. Oh, dear!

    1. When I remember something, I have to write it down immediately in the notes app on my phone or it will be lost forever. I’m very much like you—pea in a pod—in that I either remember something in detail or not at all.

I was mortified at the time because I was very much involved in our church. Now I just laugh about it because it was funny. 🤣

  8. Favorite muppet is Rolf, for me. Also love me some Kermit and Grover though.

Gosh I swear I could smell the rubbing alcohol breath on sick kids- mine got that too!

Saw Peter Dinklage in Central Park this summer- that resting bitch face of his could kill a horse- he should be more careful where he points it! I did NOT say hi.

  9. I don’t have a favourite Beatle anymore. I used to, but the more I read and learn about them (it’s become a mini-obsession), the more I respect and like each one. Besides, way back when my older sister was in the throes of Beatlemania, her fave was John, so he became mine, too.

My favourite Muppet is Oscar the Grouch. He’s unapologetically crabby and always himself. And hilarious. I also have a soft spot for Robin, the little baby frog who is Kermit’s nephew.

I do remember Shields & Yarnell! How funny that you called them up from the depths. They really extended their 15 minutes, didn’t they?

My son Sam always got strep. He self-diagnosed. He’d just suddenly say, “Mom, I feel streppy” and he was always right. I always got it very severely, well into adulthood, and was hospitalized with it once. It’s no joke.

    1. My dad loved The Beatles, and that’s how I learned more about them. Since he died, my youngest daughter, Ella, has become interested in them and now loves their music. Her favorite Beatle is Ringo.

I love Oscar the Grouch too! I love an unapologetically grumpy being. I forgot all about Robin the Frog! 💜

      Yes, they did, Nance. 🤣

It is no joke. My daughter’s elementary school was always warm in the winter, and I used to say to my husband, it’s like a petri dish in there for strep. My oldest got it yearly, sometimes twice a year. My youngest maybe had it once.

  10. “favorite muppet: kermit.”

Me too, Kari! I love me some Kermit. And my second favorite is Miss Piggy!

Never heard of Frisbee Golf?!? Had to looked it up online. When I was a kid, my father used to be obsessed with playing golf. In fact, be belong to a country club that had it’s own golf course, which my dad would take us to play. To be honest, I was never really interested in golf. However, Frisbee Golf, I would have loved!

Yes, I do remember Shields and Yarnell. How fun was that seeing them again!

“a porn site. i didn’t do their social media for much longer after that, i don’t think.”

    LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very cool that you got to meet Jamie Laurita!

And I agree, I too am grateful for the people I’ve met through blogging. I started blogging in 2005. It was with a blogging company called “tripod” remember that platform? I think they still host blogs. I’ve also had blogs on WordPress, as well as Blogger.

Fun post, my friend. Hope you’re having a fantastic week so far! X

    1. I love that we love the same Muppet!

I don’t like to golf either—but maybe I could like frisbee golf? Maybe I’ll try it out this summer.

I’ve never heard of Tripod! I’ll look them up now.

Thank you, my friend. I hope you’re having a wonderful week too. 😘💜

  11. I’d totally forgotten about Shields and Yarnell. How freaking fun and talented were they? (I just looked, she passed away in 2010 :()

Porn sites are popping up everywhere, even in church? YIKES!!

I didn’t remember Caroline having a brother named Jaimie. He’s quite handsome and nice to know he was a genuine person to meet.

Blogging creates so many connections and most of them good!

When I see my girls this weekend, I will try to smell their breath. You know, for their health. 🫣

    1. I saw that she died—and that they divorced too. So sad.

      Even in church…

Those siblings looked so much alike. Every single one of them. I think there were ten? So beautiful.

Most of them really made me laugh—you’re right 🤣

Just remember, rubbing alcohol, not drinking alcohol. That’s something altogether different.

    1. WordPress is not being good to my readers (or me)! I’m glad you finally got confirmation. I hope my posts show up in your inbox. Sometimes they go to spam, so if you don’t see them there, maybe check just in case.

      1. The email server associated with my recently updated website consistently puts all WP and Etsy (my shop!) emails into “Junk.” Very annoying. However, I know to check there a few times a day, so if you are writing, I should now be able to find and read you! Whew!

  12. my yoga blanket is soft (I have the Benevolence authentic Mexican blanket) from Amazon. maybe buy one and take your own to the studio? BTW, been meaning to ask you if your migraine doctor has ever recommended magnesium supplement? I can’t take it because of other meds I am on, but thought it might be something for you to try if your doctor approves. always looking out for you <3

    1. That’s a great idea—I’m kind of eh on sharing blankets anyway.

Yes! I’ve been taking a magnesium glycinate supplement since 2020. I love magnesium—it helps me sleep, and I haven’t had leg cramps in over five years. Thank you for looking out for me! I love that 😘💜

  13. My dad and brother used to play frisbee golf, but I could never figure out how to throw those damn things. I also regularly get my ass kicked at corn hole. I’m beginning to think I’m not the most athletic person in the world…

One of my former blog domains was bought out by a porn site too. They must lurk in the shadows, waiting for any opportunity they can find.

    1. So it’s just a frisbee headed to a hole? Why don’t I just Google it?? I hate cornhole—these feel like drinking games. Maybe you’re more athletic than you think.

OMG, Deb said the same thing! Creepy.

  14. How funny, apart from your Brady selection, we match. The only reason we don’t match on the Brady one is that we never got the programme over here. What on earth is frisbee golf? Is it quicker than golf? I am laughing about the church website! A company I worked for had a similar problem. The boss waited for 15 years before he was able to purchase the site he really wanted once the porn site was done with it :D

    1. Wow- I didn’t know The Brady Bunch wasn’t aired in other countries, but it makes sense.

I have no idea about frisbee golf! It must be popular though if we have two courses!

Okay, I don’t feel so bad now. 🤣
