Over the years, my What I Kept posts have been a way for me to slow down and notice the little moments of life that I didn’t want to forget.
One morning, while journaling, I came across a prompt that asked me to go through my camera roll and organize my photos by color, then see what patterns emerged.
I loved this idea, so I started looking. And I discovered I had been collecting something all along without realizing it: color!
Each month, I’ll choose one color and share the moments from my own life where I found it. Because sometimes we don’t realize what we’ve been keeping until we look back.
These are the colors I kept.
I chose yellow for my first month. 💛

Scroll through your camera roll and choose a color. See what you find.
We’re always collecting something.
Sometimes we just need to stop and look. 💛

Well, this is a fun idea. One that I may borrow sometime! I bet I have a lot of yellow photos, too. As fond as I am of cheese!

I hope you do borrow it! If you did an entire photo post of yellow cheese, I would enjoy that very much. 🧀

Love all your yellow photos. What a good idea to sort photos by color. I’ll give it a try.

I love this idea and it’s a perfect first choice for summer. Middle Child grew sunflowers in two pots this year from seed and they are blooming now. Beautiful and safe from wildlife on our front porch. I especially loved childhood Kari pictures – the one with your Dad! When I was a teen, I got to choose my bedroom paint color, and I chose a bright yellow. It was that color when they sold the house in 1990.
Ok – something happened yesterday and I thought of you and your Dad immediately! Yesterday would have been my Dad’s 93rd birthday. I was driving Middle Child to church and we were talking about that and suddenly, two cars in front of me, I saw an Ohio Bell bucket truck!!! My Dad worked for Ohio Bell for most of his career, but the most amazing part of this is that the Ohio Bell name was discontinued in 1993 and changed to Ameritech, then SBC, then AT&T. Why would be a truck driving around that said Ohio Bell with the name and symbol on the back of the bucket? I was flabbergasted!!! I’m so mad that I couldn’t get a picture, but I was driving and I ended up getting a red light or I would have tried to follow it after I dropped her off. How crazy is that???

I love that Middle chose sunflowers! They’re such happy flowers. And I love that you chose yellow as your room color.
FRIEND!!! OMG, I just got chills!! I love this so much! That is such a lovely sign to get. Aww, thank you so much for sharing this with me! 😘💛

How in the world do you organize your camera roll by colour? I am overwhelmed at the thought!
Yellow is SUCH a happy colour, I love it! One of my big flower containers outside is all yellow, peach, and orange. It’s just so fun and lovely!

It does feel a little daunting now that I think about it. That might be my ’tism slipping out….🤣☀️💛
SUCH a happy color! I love that color combination!

This is such an interesting and fascinating thing to do. The ability to do things like this is one of the neat things about modern tech.
Yellow is a favourite colour of mine. Maybe we were happier in the seventies because there was so much more of it around?
Those are some impressive sunflowers.

Yes to being happier when there was more color around! You nailed it.
They were impressive. I’ve never been able to recreate those 2022 sunflowers. Sigh.

That Drummond Island snapshot is an album cover.
I love collecting / organizing color after the fact. I’ve tried photography prompts to seek out particular hues and that becomes a stressful endeavor.

I love that photo. Those outfits weren’t even planned. 💛
I can see how seeking out a particular color could turn noticing into a chore. I think I enjoy looking for patterns after the fact for exactly that reason — there’s no pressure to find anything. You just start noticing what was already there.

Lovely idea, Kari, and so pleasurable to sloooowly scroll through just now. Yellow is often deemed the friendliest color. :)

I find it hard enough to stay on top of my photos in date order, it would throw me completely if I muddled them up 🤦♀️. A lovely idea though. My favourite is the sunset, what a beautiful memory to have on such a sad day ❤️

What a brilliant prompt, so glad you shared the result with us and looking forward to seeing more. I’m not generally a fan of yellow, mostly because wearing it makes me look positively sickly! But these are beautiful and bright, and reminded me of how much I love sunflowers :)
My camera roll is too full of marketing stuff which I received via various WhatsApp groups I’m in to be reflective of much other than I need to leave lots of WhatsApp groups! A big bit of decluttering I need to get one with for sure.

I wish I could say I came up with the idea, but it was a Pinterest suggestion! I’m just glad I found it. It was such a lovely distraction for me. I actually enjoy doing tedious little tasks like these. I call them ADHD meditations — my version of zen. 🤣💛
I love sunflowers too, Deb! My favorite flowers are zinnias, tulips, hydrangeas, and sunflowers.
You can live vicariously through my posts — none of that decluttering nonsense. 🤣

What an interesting idea. I think I’ll scroll through my photos and see what colour prevails.
You take extraordinary photos; I think you already notice so many small things in your life. Now, you’re just more thoughtful about considering them.
(That Blake quote is one of my favourites, btw.)

I think photos probably reveal a lot about what we notice without us even realizing it. I’ve definitely become more intentional about noticing the little things.
Everything that lives is holy is one of my favorite quotes, too. It fits so well with noticing what’s right in front of us and recognizing the beauty in the ordinary. 💛

I love the photo at Drummond Lake in MI. It’s beautiful – was it planned, I wonder, that you all had some form of yellow on.
Without peeking, I can bet that my prominent color will be pink, since 7 out of 8 littles in my daycare are GIRLS!

I don’t think it was planned, which makes it even more special.
Pink is one of my favorite colors! And I love that you have so many girls this year. 🩷

This is so cool! You could even put together a collage of colored prints and have it printed and framed. Would make for some cool artwork. Especially love the photo of you and your brother and dad by the lake and the one of Grandkitty with a tennis ball.

I love this idea! I’ve also heard of people doing color photo challenges when they visit a city for the first time. Each person picks a color and looks for it throughout the city that day. I think that sounds like a lot of fun.

I love this idea, and your collection, and your inaugural color. (I just went down a rabbit hole of putting different colors in my Google Photos search bar; I could get lost in that all day.) I’m especially drawn to the ones where there is just a pop of yellow–Biscuits in winter and Grandkittyyyy are my favorites from a color perspective. But the one of you and your dad and brother in your yellow outfits is probably my favorite favorite. Yellow and orange are such 70s colors, aren’t they?

Yellow and orange are SO 70s. That photo of me, my dad, and my brother in our matching yellow is such a perfect little snapshot of that era. I love that it ended up being your favorite, too. 💛
When I learned of this idea, I spent a lot of time organizing by color, and it was a lovely thing to focus on for a while. I love getting lost in things like this. Sometimes I need to get lost. Maybe we all do. 🤣

I love the color yellow. Interestingly, I also look really good WEARING yellow. I have a sweater that I bought in France, at a rest stop, no less, and it’s lovely! It was not very expensive but became a prized possession.
