I don’t want to forget these random thoughts that have been floating around in my head, so I’ve written them down in the notes section of my iPhone. I’m sharing them with you because I suspect they may be something that you can relate to as well.
If you’re here for the first time, welcome! You’ll be able to find the other parts of this series here.
1- It’s unfortunate that we need bumper stickers reminding us to be patient with new drivers when they are learning to drive. Shouldn’t we show patience to all drivers?
2- When we were kids, this Muppet Show skit had my brother and me laughing and rolling around the floor. “Did they say poo on television??”
3- Speaking of Muppets, do you remember Guy Smiley? One of you mentioned him in the comments, which was a blast from the past.
4- The band New Order was formerly Joy Division, and they were both nominated for The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year as a single act.
5- Why don’t more people fear canning their food and dying of botulism?
6- I found out Rick James had died while dining at BD’s Mongolian Grill. The guy who was cooking our food was the one who told us, which always makes us laugh for some reason. I’ll never forget this random fact.
OMG, I just looked it up, and BD’s Mongolian Grill is still alive and well!
7- Considering how infrequently humans freak out in public, that is a miracle. Being a soul in a body is unsettling. We all ought to freak out more.
8- It just occurred to me that orthodontists’ or dentists’ offices are the human equivalent of auto service shops.
9-Molly Ringwald was a member of the original cast of the TV show Facts of Life.

I didn’t know Molly Ringwald was on Facts of Life!

Yes! She was only on for the first season, and she may not have stayed the entire time.

I never knew that!

Ha! You are so right about doctors and dentists. Just going in for a little tune up, please!
And I am with you on the fear of botulism! Maybe it’s not as big a risk as my grade/middle school teachers seemed to think? (I feel like I learned a LOT about botulism and how to never eat from a can that had a distended lid.)
Guy Smiley!!!! Love him and all his goofy ways.

Yes! Hearing the drills and seeing the reclining chairs…it’s a human auto body shop!
YES TO THE DISTENDED LID. Suzanne, I get very nervous about cans and lids. Also, dented cans. I don’t know why I’m the way I am.
Me too! I’d definitely name a pet after him. Such a great name. Jim Henson was a treasure.

I remember that muppet, Guy Smiley, but I’d forgotten his name. I was too much of a Fozzie Bear fan, I guess– and forgot about Mr. Smiley.

So many people loved Fozzie Bear! I was a big Kermit fan.

George Clooney, too. I’m telling you, “Facts of Life” was a great breeding ground for future stars. (Another fun fact: Mrs. Garrett is a Wisconsinite.)
It’s always fun to see movie stars playing bit roles on TV shows before they were famous…especially if their character is nothing at all like what they would be known for later. Like when Tom Hanks played Uncle Ned, a raging alcoholic on “Family Ties.”

YES! George Clooney also appeared in the first season of Roseanne. I had no idea about Mrs. Garrett! I loved her.
That would be a really interesting post idea. Before they were famous…
I have another: Alanis Morrisette was on the show You Can’t Do That On Television.

I knew Alanis dabbled in acting first, but didn’t realize she’d been on that show. Cool fact!

Maybe I should keep facts like this in mind for when I have to make small talk…

Number 7 – that is profound! And so true!
And yes, we should be patient to all drivers. I try my best!

So true!
I do my best as well. I know I can be impatient at times, so I suppose I should follow that advice.

I remember Molly Ringwald on Facts of Life! Her character was always so perky. I could not believe how impatient drivers were when my son was learning to drive; he even had someone honk at him to turn right on red when he was in the driver’s ed car ( and a car was turning in front of him that would have made it completely UNsafe to turn right anyway!).

AND I believe she wore roller skates in addition to or instead of Tootie, but I could be wrong. On the show, I really liked her character. But she left to make movies, and the rest, as they say, is history…
When I was teaching Anna to drive, I remember how impatient drivers were. I’m not looking forward to it when Ella shows an interest in driving. So far, she hasn’t. I’m not sure I blame her.

Yes, Kari, I do remember Guy Smiley! My favorite muppets were Statler and Waldorf. I also loved Fozzie Bear.
“It just occurred to me that orthodontists’ or dentists’ offices are the human equivalent of auto service shops.”
LOL! So TRUE!!!! About a year and a half ago I had a lot of dental work done, which took almost five months to complete. I think I called it a major overhaul!
WOW! Did not know that Molly Ringwald was one of the original cast members of ‘Facts of Life’?!?!? My favorite character was Jo.
Fun post, my friend! Happy Monday! Have a faaaaaaabulous week! X

Statler and Waldorf! I love those two.
Ella just had her braces removed last week, and I was sitting there looking at all of these kids in reclining chairs, hearing drills, and feeling like I was in an auto body shop. You did have a major overhaul! Did they offer you an estimate before you went in? 🤣🤣
She was my favorite character too!!
Have a wonderful week as well, my friend! 😘❤️

I sure do remember Guy Smiley!
I think the fear of canning = botulism has been long laid to rest. Canning has made a comeback! I would love to learn how to do it, working alongside someone who was an “expert”.
BD’s Mongolian Grill…OMG, I had forgotten about that place. It was Tim’s favorite restaurant when he was an older kid. We’d take him to the one in Vernon Hills for his bday.

My question is, why are we no longer afraid of it when we can foods? It’s still there. So, why is it now safer?
That was the location where we went! I used to love it as well! There are only two left in the suburbs, in Naperville and Bolingbrook. ❤️

Canning isn’t any safer than it used to be, I don’t think. Maybe it stemmed from the botulism outbreak in the 1920’s, though I think that was with canned food, not home canning. Noone I know, including myself, has ever gotten sick from eating home canned food. My grandma and her sister canned everything. So I dunno!
Yep, I knew there were still two locations of BD’s left. Too bad they’re both so far away! Although when Tim comes home for a visit in Oct, if we have time, perhaps we’ll take a little trip to Naperville. :-)

We should all have more patience period. New drivers, old drivers, with people in general.

I’ve always adored the Muppets and Guy Smiley was a favorite. I watched the first clip, and once again, I’m amazed at the talent behind it all. Could that muppet look anymore like Howard Cosell? Amazing!
I DID know that New Order was previously Joy Division. I always associate Joy Division with this guy I knew in college. He had a very punk haircut and wore a trench coat and punk boots. I was fascinated by him and befriended him in my Marketing 101 class and we became study partners at the library. One day, I asked him his favorite bands and one of them was Joy Division. I wish I could remember the others. I think other people thought he was weird, but I enjoyed knowing him. He had a very unusual last name (it started with a Z) and I recently looked him up and he’s a massage therapist in the Chicago area. I found him on FB! That’s why I won’t give it up! LOL!
I’m cracking up about your Rick James/Mongolian Grill story. That’s the kind of thing I’d remember, too. So random but so cool how our minds work. But then, we forget things that are important.
I’ve always had a fear of botulism and would never dream of canning anything. And frankly, if someone gave me something they canned, I’d probably throw it in the trash! LOL!

The Muppets’ content has aged well, which is yet another testament to Jim Henson’s vision.
Your description of Zander (as I’m calling him) reminded me of John Cusack, but with better hair. Zander is living my fantasy life. He almost sounds like a movie character. If you’re ever in the area, we should get together. We also need to pay a visit to Zander.
Okay, you’re going to enjoy this. I was at the AT&T store with Mike yesterday, and we were telling the guy there and another customer how we don’t know our daughters’ phone numbers by heart. BUT we are able to remember our landline number from 2005.
It’s because technology has made everything too easy. I don’t need to dial anything; I just need press a button. But I have a whole section of my brain that remembers random nonsense, hence this post.
I WOULD TOO.

Zander! I love it. His real name is Larry Z (very Polish last name that ends in ski). He looked very much the same when I found him on FB. You and I together would be a hoot! We’d have a blast! However, I’d bet Larry doesn’t remember me :(
I KNOW! I really don’t know my kids’ phone numbers, besides the first three numbers from seeing it flash on my phone. But I do know my childhood number and my husband and my first apartment together number. And the kids’ pediatrician number from decades ago because I called it so darn much!

Larry?!! I did not see that coming… We would have so much fun! Screw Larry/Zander. 🤣
I feel so much better now. Thank you. 😘

Oh, how I loved the Muppets! I’d forgotten about Guy Smiley.
When I think of Rick James, it always brings to mind an old SNL Skit. I think it was Eddie Murphy, playing Rick, and he walked around saying: I’m Rick James, Damnit!
Had no idea about Molly Ringwald in FOL or Joy Division/New Order being the same.

I loved them as well! The Muppets were such a big part of my childhood.
I remember that skit!! 🤣
I didn’t know that about Joy Division until I heard it on the First Wave channel of satellite radio a few weeks ago!

I did not know Molly Ringwald was on the Facts of Life. Just goes to show, everyone’s gotta start somewhere.
I am familiar with Guy Smiley. Fun fact, I had a friend in high school who looked like the muppet Prairie Dawn. We called her Prairie ALL.THE.TIME. Prairie now seems to be to be a name that a rock star would name their kid. I guess the muppets were ahread of their time.

OMG such great (and “clean”) giggles from this clip. Did you guys know the meaning of “sham” at the time? Such sophisticated and targeted (to BOTH) adults and kids makes me wish I had tuned to Sesame Street more often as the electronic babysitter for my kids when they were small. Would surely have been more beneficial to them at the time, and maybe even better than Oprah for me!

Molly Ringwald on the Facts of Life? I just looked it up on YouTube. That is the best fun fact and a great way to begin my day! Funny, ever since the prompt to list favorite movies came out and I exchanged a few comments about the breakfast club, reminders of the movie have been hitting me. I’ve heard the song randomly three times in two days and the movie came up in conversation. Now Molly and Facts of Life. I wonder what the universe is trying to tell me.
