73 Questions

Kari

I found a list of questions titled Vogue’s 73 Questions. First of all, I have never read a single issue of Vogue magazine. Not bragging, just stating. Second, I answered all 73 questions in my journal one week and was ready to share them here when I found out there isn’t actually a set list of 73 questions. You can pick and choose!

Well, that sounds fun.

So I took the questions I had answered, looked at some of the lists and ideas I found online, and made a little mashup of my favorites. I hope you’ll play along in the comments, although I realize 73 questions is a lot to ask of anyone.

1- What is your favorite time of day? Morning

2-What is your biggest weakness? Chocolate

3- How do you relax? Journaling, listening to music, reading blogs, snuggling with my dogs, sometimes social media.

4- What is most important to you? My family

5- One thing in your bag at all times? Migraine medication

6- What inspires you? A good book, a good quote, my blogging community, nature, my children, my husband, my mom, my friendships, things I find on social media.

7- What color was your prom dress? White and white. I wore it two years in a row.

8- How do you describe yourself in three words? Observant. Reflective. Compassionate.

9- What do you notice when you first meet someone? Their vibe. Which is funny because I’m often uncomfortable when I first meet someone, so I realize they could actually be reacting to my vibe. But I feel like I can usually sense when someone isn’t really interested in being there or interested in meeting me. I notice that kind of energy pretty quickly.

10- What are your friends like? I have several good friends who don’t really know each other. I don’t really have a friend group. My friends are all so different from one another, and I absolutely love that. I joke that I have a different friend for each of my different personalities.

The one thing they all have in common is that they’re artistic or creative, although even saying that feels like I’m putting them in a box. They are all so much more than that. I think I’m drawn to people who see the world a little differently.

12- What is your favorite season? Spring

13- What are you scared of? Dying in a hospital

14- How many kids do you want? TWO! Yay!😊

15- What is your favorite flower? Zinnia

16- Tea or coffee? Coffee

17- If you could play any instrument, which would you play? Piano

18- Favorite holiday? Christmastime

19- What places do you want to visit? I don’t really have anywhere I’m itching to visit. I do have a note on my phone full of places I’ve seen online that look pretty, but I’m not a huge traveler. That may change as I get older. Who knows?

20- Must-have beauty product? Eyebrow pencil/brush

21- Favorite thing about yourself? I like the little things.

22- What was the name of your first pet? Taffy

23- Favorite apps on your phone? Spotify, Song Pop, Flighty, Pinterest, Notes, Camera, and Photos

24- Where do you see yourself in ten years? Not a fan of this kind of question. One day at a time.

25- Next tattoo you want to get? My mom and dad’s last name, which is my maiden name, written in Dad’s handwriting, and my mom’s maiden name written in her handwriting. Side by side.

26- Which three famous people would you invite for tea? I’m not particularly impressed by fame. I’d invite my mom, Anna, and Ella, and we wouldn’t drink tea.

27- Favorite designer? I don’t have one. I’m beginning to see why I’ve never read Vogue…

28- Favorite scent? Cedar or pine after a rainfall

29- Which person would you ask 73 questions to? All of you

30- What is your favorite thing to eat? Breakfast/brunch at a restaurant

31- What was your favorite movie as a child? The Wiz

32- Movie that makes you cry every time you watch it? Fried Green Tomatoes

33- Favorite thing to wear? Comfort clothing – sweatpants, leggings, etc.

34- Most adventurous thing you’ve done? Run barefoot down Santa Monica Boulevard at midnight with Anna.

35- One movie you can watch over and over? Return to Me

36- What is the coolest thing in the world? Women

37- What are your three favorite albums? Jose Gonzalez – Local Valley | Valerie June – The Moon and Stars-Prescriptions for Dreamers | The Paper Kites – Woodland

38- Sweet or savory? Both at the same time. Yummm.

39- Cats or dogs? Doggies

40- Favorite actress? I don’t have one

41- Favorite place you ever visited? 30A in Florida

42- What show are you currently watching? Modern Family

43- Favorite male singer- Jose Gonzalez

44- Favorite female singer- Valerie June

45- Who do you turn to when you’re sad? Mike

46- Do you like cooking or baking? Baking

48- Secret talent? Music trivia knowledge

49- What are you most excited for these days? Afternoon nap time with the doggies!

50- What does your name mean? Free woman of light and bright independent spirit.

51- Hobbies that you will never give up. Writing, journaling, reading, plants, and music.

52- What makes you mad? Injustice is a huge one. People who abuse their power. Cruelty disguised as kindness. Performative kindness. Being dismissed. Needless suffering. Essentially, people causing unnecessary harm through selfishness, dishonesty, or a lack of empathy.

53- Which song would you like to hear to be happy? I have a playlist for this! (Of course I do.) If I had to pick just one, it would be Popcorn by Hot Butter. It always makes me think of my friend Dina and a story she once told me about when she was little.

54- Favorite word in English? Grace. And serendipity!

55- Something people don’t know about you. I take part in research studies for universities around the U.S. and the world to make a little extra money. I’ve been doing it for years now, and it’s something I genuinely enjoy. And, bonus, it’s paid for Christmas for the last few years.

56- What old song are you into right now? If You Leave Me Now by Jaya. It was popular the summer I first moved to Illinois, and I just recently heard it for the first time in decades. I love rediscovering an old, forgotten song.

57- Window or aisle seat? Window or exit row. I know that wasnt an option. It should’ve been.

58- Favorite piece of clothing? My Birkenstocks. I wear them year-round.

59- Optimistic or pessimistic? A healthy mix of both

60- Something from your childhood that you still have? Me 💜

61- Favorite part of the day? When Mike gets home from work and we watch a show with Ella, eat dinner, and talk about our day. Just being together.

62- Do you believe in fate? I do

63- Diamonds or pearls? Neither

64- What is something you can’t do? Fold a fitted sheet

65- What do you usually eat for breakfast? Oatmeal and fruit

66- Favorite color? Green

67- What makes you happy? Thriving houseplants, wildflowers, finding beauty in ordinary moments, hearing my family laugh, a really good book on a quiet afternoon, a really good song at exactly the right time, unexpected acts of kindness, genuine connection.

68- What is your advice towards people? I don’t give advice

69- What is your favorite ice cream flavor? It changes, but currently it is cookies and cream.

70- Do you prefer milk chocolate or dark chocolate? Milk

71- What is your favorite fruit? That changes as well. Today it is grapes.

72- Vintage or new? A mix of both

73- Who is your favorite superhero? I don’t have one. I tend to admire ordinary people who keep going through really hard things. 💜

  1. These are fun! I started to answer them but then realized that would be a REALLY long comment. I’ll have to copy them to my blog and answer there.. which is great since I have a giant blank space for next Monday and wasn’t sure what I was going to write about.

  3. This is great. I’m a bit stalled of late, so I may try the list. I do play piano. I bitched about practicing my entire childhood, but I’m so grateful my mother made me persist.

    Many of my favourites are like yours – fluid and situational.

I don’t see it in other photos, but that one… I can’t even describe the joy I felt in my heart recognizing her in you. 💜💜💜 Kari’s family moved oversees in elementary school, so I hadn’t thought of her in close to 30 years, but curiosity got the best of me and it would appear she’s back in AZ doing social work. So, she still has a good heart. Blogging is such a wellspring of happiness!!

  6. I love-love-LOVE Return To Me!! It’s been on a free Roku channel this month and I watch every time I come across it! I also like Only You (but not as much a return to me*), and most anything Bonnie Hunt does. I was in the audience at a taping of her talk show (2010), where she got buzzed on about 2 sips of a cocktail made by Brian Boitano (the former Olympic skater)

    I was so happy to click thru and confirm you were referring to the same Popcorn song that instantly played on my head!

    I can fold a fitted sheet but consider it a waste of effort. Most of clean laundry now gets shoved back into the laundry bags – I just can’t be bothered with folding now that I don’t work and have to use laundromat (dead waahing machine and broken pipe).

    *Did you ever see Prelude To A Kiss? It shares the same basic concept – connecting with a soul even in a different body – but via Meg Ryan and a Baldwin bro (I think Alex). Not avail digitally, which really bugs me.

    1. It’s one of my favorite movies!! Bonnie Hunt would probably be my favorite actor if I were answering that question, even though I don’t really care about famous people. She is so down-to-earth and likeable. OMG, I loved her show!! I’m so envious that you got to go to a taping!

      I’m so happy so many people loved Popcorn as much as I do. I have two different stories about that song. I may have to share them here someday.

      I’ve never seen the movie, but I’ve heard of it. Ugh, I hate that it isn’t available.

  7. This was a fun read. We’re on our way to SC and Coach is driving and I’m getting caught up on blog posting and commenting. One way we are so different, I am terrible at music trivia. Coach though, he knows all of it – yet, we’re lucky if he remembers our names. ;)

    My biggest weakness is knowing I should go to bed, but staying up late to watch a movie with a kid who has asked me to watch a movie with him/her.

    I also have a hard time passing up on ice cream though.

    Three words to describe myself: good storyteller, optimistic, compassionate

    I also eat oatmeal and fruit for breakfast every day.

    Favorite word in English: consistency

    How many children do you want: young me: 10. For years I said that 6 is the new 10. Now I say, 8 is the new 10.

    I’m sure many people can say this, due in large part to the size of the questionnaire, but so many of your answers would be mine, too. SO MANY.

      I love that we have so many in common! And yes, I’ve seen that movie! It’s a family favorite. In fact, when my dad was studying for his master’s many years ago, that soundtrack was his favorite, and he listened to it on repeat while he studied. I can’t hear it without thinking of him. ❤️

  12. I have been to Florida dozens of times, but never to the Panhandle. I think mainly because there are no direct flights there from Boston. It looks gorgeous though…those beaches 🤩

  13. Oh my god, Kari, THE POPCORN SONG. I haven’t thought of that in years. I remember the music teacher in first grade making us all pretend to be popcorn while she played the song. (I did NOT want to pop!) This made me laugh, remembering. And I think there is probably nothing better in the world than an afternoon nap with a dog. I used to have one dog who’s snuggle into the bend of my knees and another who’d snuggle into my tummy. I miss that! It was fun to read all your answers–they paint a full portrait of you.

    1. LOL, your comment made me literally laugh out loud. We never did the popcorn game in school. Why was my school lame?? My friend Dina said they did that game at a sleepover once, and they laid on the parents’ pool table. Then as she was telling the story, she literally laid on the floor and mimicked popping corn. To this day, when I hear it, I think of her, and she says she thinks of me because I was laughing so hard. When she’s having a bad day, she’ll send me the song and vice versa.

      OMG, my dogs snuggle in those same positions.

  14. Maybe I’ll do these questions, although probably not 73 at once. Could I do it in a five for Friday format? Hmm. That would take 14 1/2 FFF, and knowing me I’d do one a month so…CONTENT FOREVER

    But I will answer some of these/ respond to some of yours. Where to start, where to start. What’s always in my bag? Wallet, phone, sunglasses, keys, lip product of some sort (a large assortment of lipsticks in my big bag, a tinted lip balm in my dog walking bag, because it’s a bit much to have a really bold lip while I’m walking the dog) (not that I’m opposed to it but it’s usually early in the morning post-workout-pre-shower, so it’s not like I’m putting on the ritz here).

    I relax by reading, my favourite time of day is morning, we don’t have proms here but my grad dress was RED, with shoes and bag dyed-to-match. What do I notice when I first meet someone? Probably something lame like their hair or what they’re wearing. Maybe if they smile a lot? I have a few different friend groups and they are all kind of different. My main friend group here are a bunch of women around my age who like to laugh a lot. I love them! What am I scared of – fire. I love all the flowers, I play the piano, Christmas is my favourite holiday, I always wear mascara and pressed powder no matter what, my first pet was Spike, I have no tattoos and I will not have tattoos, favourite smell is vanilla, good grief I’m only on question 30.

    I like cooking AND baking, my favourite snack is popcorn, Nicole means “victory of the people,” (I’m skipping a whole ton of questions because it’s lunch and I’m hungry), aisle seat always, although these days I’m totally spoiled and we usually fly fancy-class, I still have my Cabbage Patch kid and stuffed bunny named Mrs Bunny, many things make me happy, I like dark chocolate, and my fave fruits are raspberries and McIntosh apples. They have to be Macs to be my favourite.

  15. I love getting to know you (and others) this way. I also share you love for mornings, though I most look forward to evenings when I have a decaf latte and watch TV by myself. I never went to prom or any school dance. I have a huge travel bucket list and one of those items is 30A in Florida! I also hate the ‘where will you be in 10 years’ and ‘who’s your hero’ type questions.

    My favorite scent is coconut, and favorite ice cream will always be Graeters Coconut Chocolate Chunk because it is amazing! My favorite clothing designer is Michael Kors and Calvin Klein, but I love Betsy Johnson and Kate Spade purses. And it get the majority at TJMaxx!

    The most adventurous thing I’ve ever done was kayak in the Pacific Ocean. Never again! My blogger name means ‘jewels’ but my real name means ‘youthful.’ Favorite color is eggplant.

    I love that you do research studies! My oldest daughter is a research nurse and she is so grateful for people who are willing to participate in her studies.

    1. I love your latte/TV evening routine. That sounds absolutely lovely. That is kind of how I start my mornings, only without TV.

      Honestly, the act of prom was the stupidest thing I’ve ever done, and it was only to say I went. I’d rather have done something else fun with my boyfriend at the time.

      30A is on your list?? I was thinking no one would know it. We went to Destin three years in a row, and we discovered 30A on our last visit. It was heavenly.

      Okay, now I want to try that Graeter’s flavor. We have a Graeter’s out here, so that will be my flavor next time we go. I also love coconut. I was going to say Calvin Klein if I had to pick one, but that was the only one I really knew and had worn.

      OMG, kayaking in the ocean?? I jetskied in the ocean, and I will never do that again. Kayaking feels even more adventurous.

      Eggplant — I just got a thrifted eggplant cardigan by Calvin Klein a few weeks ago. My gosh, we are so connected.

      I love taking the studies. I found the company through TikTok about three or four years ago. I’m so grateful for the opportunities I get.

  16. These are such fun questions! So many of your answers are pretty much the same as mine. No wonder we’re such good friends!

    I have never read Vogue either. Nor am I impressed by fame.

    I lived in KY and went to a small high school during prom. It was a dance with a band held in the high school gym. I went with my best friend and we basically hung out with other girls, & talked to the band members (of course we did, ha ha). My dress was made by my mother: Floor-length white eyelet strapless dress with a bright pink ribbon around the waist. Can you say late 70’s?!

    I grew up playing the piano & flute & now have no desire to play either one. Maybe because they were forced on me? Especially the piano. Now I wish I knew I had to play the guitar.

    Dark chocolate. Mint chocolate chip ice cream.

    When I think of my closest friends, you’re right, all so different from one another. (You’re considered one of them!) But yet, either all artistic or creative except for one. Hmm!

    My name means dark or black. I like my name, but not the meaning.

    OK, now I need to know about you & Anna running barefoot down Santa Monica Blvd. I hope you guys were belting out, “All I wanna do is have some fun” while doing so!

      I also wish I could play guitar. I played clarinet for seven years, and I have no interest in ever playing it again, even though I loved doing it at the time.

  18. How fun! I love learning more about you. The university study thing is intriguing! I didn’t know such a thing existed. How does one even fold a fitted sheet? I sure don’t know how. I just shove it in the drawer and call it good! So many of these questions would have me changing my answer depending on the day, my mood, and the direction the wind is blowing!

  20. What I loved learning about you most is that your favorite flowers are zinnias. I don’t know why that made me smile. I loved growing them from seed when I was young and love them! I always smile when I see them but never heard anyone say it’s their favorite until you. I think they’ve been underrated and deserve the love!💞 (I don’t have a zinnia emoji)

    1. I just started loving zinnias about four years ago. I was at a local farmers market and saw these beautiful bouquets of zinnias in glass jars, and they were just so lovely. When I asked what they were, I was shocked that I’d never really known much about them. So I learned that I could grow them from seed in my own yard, and I’ve been doing it every spring since. This is the first year I haven’t had them… long story, and it makes me sad. I won’t let that happen again!

      And why isn’t there a zinnia emoji? Poor, underrated flowers. 😘🤣

  21. I love posts like this, and yours are always especially interesting and fun! It’s almost impossible to choose which questions to answer, so I just now randomly chose to answer every 7th question. Let’s go!

    7- What color was your prom dress? Oops. Should have gone with every 8th question, I guess.

    14- How many kids do you want? I also wanted TWO (though post-divorce, if things had worked out, I’d have been okay with a third).

    21- Favorite thing about yourself? My sense of humor, and also, my ability to manifest.

    28- Favorite scent? Vanilla or freshly brewed coffee. Ideally, freshly brewed vanilla coffee!

    35- One movie you can watch over and over? Singles.

    42- What show are you currently watching? The Deuce. I’d never even heard of it until a month ago.

    49- What are you most excited for these days? Saturday night cards with Tara. We listen to records, enjoy alcoholic beverages, and genuinely have a great time together.

    56- What old song are you into right now? Ooh, how timely, and perfectly related to #42. “This Year’s Girl” by Elvis Costello + The Attractions. It’s the theme song for Season 2. I’d never heard it before, but it’s pretty catchy.

    63- Diamonds or pearls? “Purple Rain.”

    70- Do you prefer milk chocolate or dark chocolate? Dark. Once upon a time, I was a milk chocolate or white chocolate guy, but now both are way too sweet for me. Funny how our tastes change as we get older, huh?

        • I’d love to go back to Paris and France, Portugal to visit my cousin, and Ireland (never been)
        • That I’m an empath, and all that goes along with that, and I never give anything but my best in any given situation

    My Mom used to do in-person research studies.

    My dear friend Kelly also loves Combos; It’s a running joke that she always has a bag of them in her glove compartment for emergencies.

      YES. The company I work with matches me with research studies based on my profile, and they can be anything from surveys to psychology experiments to all kinds of other interesting research. I make a lot more now that I’ve been doing it for several years (although the pay isn’t the greatest). I used to do in-person research studies too, which pay a lot more, but those require driving into the city, and I don’t always love that.

      Kelly is my kind of girl. 💜

  25. I loved reading this (found through Singing Gecko blog.) It really reminded me of the old days of blogging … and I often wish blogs were still a popular thing. Anyway, all this to say thanks for the prompts and that I enjoyed playing along! I’m going to watch Return To Me this weekend!

    Your tattoo idea sounds wonderful. I love the idea of a tattoo in the handwriting of someone special. What is it about handwriting that is so precious??? Maybe because it’s so recognizably THEM?

    Folding a fitted sheet is something I have agreed to no longer care about, lol. I just can’t make it work, and I’m okay with that.

  27. Kari, I was surprised to hear about the research studies you participate in. That sounds fascinating, although I’d want to know everything about it – the criteria, how the questions were designed, let alone the eventual outcome… maybe that’s why I never get picked for things like that, I ask too many questions! :D

    I’m pondering doing one of these myself some day…

    1. The company I work for is actually based in London! I get paid in pounds, which I convert to dollars. Most of the studies I do, though, are through universities in the U.S. I can send you a link if you’re interested. They typically have a waitlist to participate in studies. My daughter tried to sign up years ago, but she was put on a waitlist and never heard back. I was really lucky to get in when I did.
