In July, I acknowledged having 35 books on my TBR (to be read) list. Then I wrote What Books Are On Your To Be Read List? and you lovely humans contributed 41 new ideas to that list. Some of you also suggested I create a Goodreads account.

I explained that my TBR list, my Goodreads account, and library browsing, had resulted in a chaotic mix of books, which meant that many of the books you recommended were being pushed to the bottom of my list. My system was messed up when I added new books to the top of the list.

Show of hands, how many of you have read Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way?

In addition to the vision boards, I have a new project idea. We’re going to be very busy this winter.

I’d love to start a Morning Pages/The Artist’s Way group for anyone who’s interested. If you’ve never read her book, I assure you it’s not a cult or a multi-level marketing company.

It can change someone’s life at any age. Not just artists, and I believe those of us who have read it would agree. It will alter that way you think about things. We could talk about each chapter on the podcast once a week and work through it together.

I’m going to go into more detail about it in next week’s podcast, so stay tuned. 🙂

I mention that I’ve read 50 books in the last year and that I’ve never read so many books in a year in my entire life. I believe it has made me a better writer and a better person. That’s something I’m quite proud of.

Do you know how many books you read on average in a year?

I saw a TikTok video of someone approaching people in a bookstore and asking what their favorite book of all time is. I’m not sure what mine is, and I certainly wouldn’t be able to answer on the spot like that.

Do you know what your favorite book of all time is?

I mentioned Rachel Dawson’s reading journal, which I discovered on TikTok. Her TikTok account is AllTheReads, and her journal can be found on Amazon.

Do you keep a reading journal?

What are you reading right now?

  1. I did morning pages for a few years back in the late 1990s. Then I stopped because I felt like I’d learned how to keep track of my thoughts, writing them down and saving them had become a matter of course. A couple of years ago I found my morning pages, re-read them, then shredded them. It was one of the most freeing things I’ve done! Good bye past, hello now.

  2. As I was listening to ALL of the books that you’ve been reading, I was thinking: I hope she has a journal or ledger where she keeps track of them all. LOOK AT ME, KNOWING THINGS.

Picking your favorite book is like picking your favorite child.

Sadly, I’ve been off the reading train this past year. It’s one of those things that I either do quite a bit or not at all. I blame the internet.

    1. It’s like you are the Kari whisperer or something. 😉

      YES, THIS.

I, too, blame the internet. I also believe you’ve had a lot going on in your corner of the world, what with weddings and home renovations. Maybe once things calm down, you’ll be able to devote more time to it.

  3. My best friend from college gave me “The Artist’s Way” about seven years ago. She told me it would change my life. For her, she began painting and she’s really talented! For me, I started my blog. Then I submitted a story to SwimSwam.com and I got a call from the owner. He said, “If SwimSwam were a movie, I would like you to play the role of swim mom.” For the next six years I wrote a weekly parenting article for their website and features for their print magazine. I also started writing for trade magazines. I attribute all of that to The Artist’s Way.

    1. This is wonderful, Elizabeth. It truly is life changing. But, I suppose you can’t make someone want to change their life if they aren’t ready. I just know that I’d love to share this with so many other people. It truly helped me in many aspects of my life.

  4. I keep a spreadsheet of all the books I’ve read, I read a lot so I like to keep track. My favourites of all time are, in no particular order, The Blind Assassin, Diary of a Provincial Lady, and Lives of Girls and Women.

  5. I always hate that question…. what is your favorite book or author is just too hard to answer. I have favorites in different genres for different reasons but even then it’s usually a list. I read about 100 books a year not including books I read with the boys while homeschooling.

  6. I love The Glass Castle, but I’m not sure I can say it’s my FAVORITE. Seems too narrow a question. I just started reading Say Nothing – it’s about the troubles in Northern Ireland. So far, I really like it. I also just read A Man Called Ove, which was excellent. I think I average a book or two a month.

In one of my writing classes, the teacher told us that we should be reading every day because it helps our writing – so well done, Kari.

I’ve never even heard of the Artist’s Way. Intrigued.
