chipmunks on feeders, dogs on ledges

it’s not all grateful journals and soul homework around here.

some days, it’s chipmunks on feeders, dogs on ledges.

because they were eating so aggressively, the birds kept knocking down our old window bird feeder.

i mean, i understand.

i, too, am an aggressive eater.

but i’d have to dig the feeder out of the bushes below every day and refill it.

until one day there was no feeder to be found. it had been lost deep within the bushes, and since who knows what lurks there, i decided to order a new one.

this one was less expensive than the previous one and had a bird bath on top of it.

i put it a little lower on the window than the previous feeder so i could reach it. i was throwing bird seed into the other one because it was so high up.

i left to take ella to school, and when I returned, i asked mike if we’d had any birds, and this is what I saw as i turned to look at the feeder:

wonder what kind of bird this is?

buddy began to notice the new kind of bird at our new kind of feeder as the day progressed.

2 p.m.

my normally laid-back dog was obsessively stalking the bird feeder every time I entered this room.

3 p.m.

5 p.m.

the next day…

at first, I thought I needed to move the feeder.

then I caught this:

i don’t think i’m going to move the feeder.

  1. I love the photos of your dog watching that strange bird! My Bird Buddy went flying into the wash outside our fence when some aggressive birds landed on it at once. It broke the solar panel connection. I ordered a new solar panel and used the cord to hang it from the fence, where it can’t be knocked down.

  2. First, I’m cracking up that you said to hell with looking for the old feeder and just bought a new one!!! LOL! And I love that Buddy kept changing stalking positions. The video is so funny because that chipmunk doesn’t give a you-know-what that Buddy is eyeing him.

We’ve never had a window feeder, but have had various hanging bird feeders and it was a constant battle with squirrels. There was a particular episode where my husband got so fed up (our kids were very little at the time) that he grabbed a walnut in a shell and threw it at the squirrel, yelling “Get out of there, Fat Boy!!!!!” I have no idea where that name came from, but my kids were laughing their asses off, especially when the squirrel casually climbed down and claimed that walnut!!!!

    1. My husband was the bird feeder filler and yard keeper upper, so everything has gone to hell in a handbasket. I was like NOPE when it fell into the bushes and I couldn’t find it. I think the chipmunk has been eating the leftover bird scraps that have fallen into the bushes and is excited to finally be able to come to the table and eat the good stuff. 🤣

Fat boy! That is funny! We haven’t seen any squirrels at our video feeder recently. They have enough food from other sources, but once it gets colder, they will return to our feeders.

    1. I really like how his chipmunk friend was running around in the yard in the background! I imagined myself as the chipmunk friend, terrified of the dog on the other side of the window staring at his pal. That chipmunk is a badass. Note to myself- be more like the chipmunk on the feeder than the chipmunk running around the yard. 🤣

      1. That would be aspirational for me. I am so much more the one running around in the yard. Sigh. #goals I want to be more like the crows in our yard. They give zero f’s about anything we humans have to say about anything. I feel like they grudgingly allow me to live in their territory, but it’s permission that could be revoked at any time.

      2. That’s so funny because yesterday as Ella and I were leaving for school, there was a crow at the feeder next to us and he just stared at us, not afraid at all. I thought, damn, I wish I could be as fearless as a crow. I thought about filling the feeder, but decided against it because I was intimidated. BY A CROW. 🤣🖤

OMG Kari, that made me laugh out loud. I’m such a squirrel fan, and they too enjoy getting in on the action of birdfeeders. And it blows me away how those cuties can manuver themselves into the feeders that are only big enough for birds. They’re magicians!

Those photos of Buddy peering into the feeder cracked me up. You can see just how involved he is in checking them out. And that video is priceless! Buddy is RIVETED to that feeder.

Fun post, my friend! Always enjoy seeing a slice of your life!

Have a terrific rest of your week! X

  4. Hahahaha!!! It’s the best movie ever and Buddy is here for it! When we moved here from Calgary, Rex was so interested in all the low windows. We called it “watching TV” and one of my friends said it was like IMAX for the dog. That said, Rex likes to chase squirrels so when he sees one he gets very excited.

    1. Aww! I love it when dogs become fascinated by the animals outside. Buddy and Biscuits both chase rabbits and squirrels in our backyard, but Buddy would sit for HOURS underneath the trees and stalk the squirrels in the trees. This is much more convenient for him. Definitely the cinematic equivalent of critter viewing. 🤣

  5. Buddy!!! Stalking from the window sill & glorious plant display! The video cracked me up – between Buddy’s intensity, the chipmunk’s blasé all day attitude, the Slasher soundtrack and Biscuit at the end! Ha! Who needs TV when you have a window feeder, huh?

  6. OMG. That is hilarious. Buddy has a friend!!

I would have done the same thing, buy a new feeder if my current feeder fell into a pit of snakes. (I mean, we can only assume ALL the snakes live there, right?)

  7. I love your wall of photos. This is so funny. I died at it’s not all grateful journals and soul homework. Aw, Buddy. I cannot believe he could get on that ledge. Does he think he’s a cat? Super cute. Poor Biscuit was like WAIT, I WANT TO BE A YOU TUBE STAR TOO. WHAT CAN I DO TO STEAL MY BRO’S THUNDER? Also, Buddy, how did you stay SO still?

    1. Buddy has always thought he was a cat! When I’m in Anna’s old room, he’s usually with us (Biscuits and me), but when we’re downstairs, he’s always waiting for the chipmunk. 😂🖤

  8. Love it! We bought a suction cup window bird feeder too, but have yet to mount it. The problem is, that’s going to require a very tall ladder if we put it where we want it. Mark and heights don’t get along.

  9. OMG! That video, with the unintentional dramatic soundtrack – too good 🤣!
I think I may have to get one of those feeders.
