i feel like a negative post after a gratitude post is kind of necessary. i’m only human, after all—not rainbows and unicorns 24/7. the older i get, the easier it is to list 100 things i don’t love than 100 i do.
in fact, i’ve been stuck at 50 things i love in my phone since fall, and i’m pretty sure i could crank out another one of these bad boys by my birthday in april. menopause brain might mean a few items sneak in twice—but maybe some annoyances are worth repeating.
here we go…
ai-generated music
influencers
people who talk loudly on their phone in quiet spaces
the back seat of a rollercoaster
leaf blowers
empty platitudes
celebrities
dry mouth
when you burp and a little something comes up with it
medical bills

people who don’t use turn signals
wearing a costume or having to
linen clothing (never looks flattering on me)
when my dog barks at “nothing,” especially at night when i’m alone
“must be nice”
people who act like they know everything
smell of hospital
when people block intersections with their cars at a stoplight
people who constantly interrupt in conversation

road construction
companies that sneak in yearly fees
shoulds and shouldn’ts
trying to find a phone charger that actually works…somewhere in the house
bureaucratic red tape
when the robots won’t let you talk to a person
when you feed the birds daily and they still poop on your car
people unwilling to share
dark tinted windows on cars
being an adult

scam artists preying on the vulnerable
when you can’t sign up without a facebook account
movie remakes that feel unnecessary
wellness retreats with sky-high prices for so-called “healing”
artificial flowers in outside gardens
barrel jeans
spam of any kind (not the meat)

power school
“i’ll pray for you”

when people share paywalled links — bold move, assuming i have browsing money
grapes in fruit cocktail
soggy fruit
trying to find a recipe through a sea of pop-up ads
cleaning the tub/shower
bags of chips that are mostly air
having to sell or market anything
school fundraisers
having to give a speech
having the flu

costco (the experience)
crowds
wrapping presents
“breaking news”
feeling like i have to throw up
the smell of the house after frying fish
kids who climb up in restaurant booths to stare at the people behind them — and the parents who pretend not to notice
situations that overcharge you simply because you have no alternative (ie: uber near airports)
the smell of the house after cooking broccoli
people who talk on their phone while a cashier is helping them
a room full of coughing humans
people who go out of their way to complain (these posts are different-shhh)
recipes that link to a video tutorial
i guess what i’m saying is that i don’t like recipe websites
or ads
surveys after appointments
people who skip proper hand-washing after using the bathroom
last-second mergers who think the rules don’t apply.
mosquito bites
thinking basic needs like healthcare, food, and shelter aren’t a human right

gambling
bed and breakfasts
mildew smell on laundry (fist bump, ron)
“i didn’t expect this video to blow up” (yes you did)
feeling unwelcome
people who don’t pick up after themselves
the smell of a stale hotel room
horror movies
lorelei gilmore
tall furniture blocking windows
there you have it — another 100 things that steal my joy (and maybe yours too). share your own pet peeves or tell me i’m being dramatic in the comments.

I agree with at least 97% of these. The no-turn-signal drives especially cheese me off. Is it that hard to put on your freakin’ blinker?!
Speaking of movie remakes that feel unnecessary, not a remake exactly, but I saw an ad for “The Odyssey” coming out this summer. Looks exactly like “Troy” but minus Brad Pitt. Classic story, sure, but it’s one we’ve seen plenty of times already.

I have not heard AI generated music (at least, that I know of), but the whole concept makes me FURIOUS.
Ugh the mini barf — so gross!!!
Using a turn signal is so easy! Why do so many people seem incapable of it?
YES to movie remakes and barrel jeans. WHYYYYYYYYY.
This was fun to read and I got some good giggles along the way.

It feels inconsiderate, doesn’t it?
Right?? The jeans make people look like cowboys from the old days!
I’m so glad you got giggles! I’m always afraid of hurting feelings when I publish this post.

I will eat the fruit cocktail grapes. I love those things – childhood memories unlocked.
This is a great and comprehensive list, and I will also add:
-the filthy and unclean grocery carts and baskets (and I’m not squeamish)
-Costco getting out of the book seller game
-Owen Hunt (Grey’s Anatomy) – he is a horrible person (so is House)
-I didn’t watch Gilmore Girls, but whiny characters on any show make me scream. They’re almost always women, so it’s mostly lazy sexism for cheap laughs
-the smell of cigarette smoke on clothes (I feel bad about this one as a former smoker, but they reek. I reeked)

I love that for each thing we don’t love, there’s someone out there ready to love it. That’s pretty cool.
OMG yes — I hated that, especially when we had to put our kids in clean outfits in those seats.
Yes! I used to love looking at their books.
I’ve never seen either character, but I trust you on it.
I agree with the sexism — the Lorelai/Lorelei character was written by a woman, which stymies me a little.
This was me too! My parents smoked in the house, and then when I was older, I smoked too, in my parents’ house. I remember going on a trip with my boyfriend, and I had stopped smoking that weekend and realized exactly what I smelled like because I could smell for the first time in a long time. It was awful.

This is fun and funny! Love it! I got out my notepad . . .
I totally agree: medical bills (still fighting with insurance over my mother’s hospital bill from JULY!); “must be nice” was something kids said constantly when I was in school and I hated it, but I don’t hear it anymore, thank God; surveys (I’m not doing them unless I’m getting paid); situational awareness (I’m either a ghost or the quietest person on Earth because no one seems to see me when I’m shopping); smell of hospital (OK, Mary Cosby!!!!!) LOL!
Some of my own: LED lightbulbs and built-in light fixtures, political parties and government entities, snow/ice/weather forecasters that make a big deal out of it; people who buy up all the bread, milk, and bananas because of the weather forecast, people who talk on their phone while pushing their child in a stroller.
Ones I question of yours: What are you doing with your phone chargers?? I use the same one for as long as I have my phone. Artificial flowers outdoors – I used to feel it was awful, but I’m so tired of spending money on flowers in May, only to have them die by July 1st that I’m considering fake flowers for baskets around my deck! “I’ll pray for you” I usually think people just say it and don’t mean it, but if I say it, I totally mean it because I hate to lie!
Enjoy the last reunion episode of RHOSLC this week. Tell me you’re watching Traitors!!! XO

I once bought some high-end silk flower stems to add color to a front-yard planter that contained a non-floral plant. It took YEARS for a neighbor to realize the flowers were permanently in bloom, then figure out they were fake. I’ll do it again!
Why do people buy so much milk for weather emergencies? Here (Calif), we stock up on water.

Yay to the notepad!
OMG, friend, I hate this. We have medical bills heading our way and I don’t want to think about it because Mike’s company just changed to a different provider. I’m hoping everything is the way it’s supposed to be.
When I wrote “smells like hospital,” I was thinking of when my dad was in the hospital — that’s probably when I added it to the list. BUT I did think of Mary, and I knew you’d say something! 💜
I hate LED lights, especially headlights. All of yours are all of mine. Peas in a pod we beeee.
You and Melanie are both questioning my charger situation — do you have an Android by chance? We have iPhones, and I’m wondering if that’s the reason. My MIL did the whole fake flowers outside thing, and it was charming. But I’m talking about the faded, ugly ones that people never take down. You go on with your bad self. No judgment here. The “I’ll pray for you” is rooted in religion that’s deeper than what I can write here — I’ll have to message you someday about it.
OMG yes — episode three! Something to look forward to! I’ve not watched one episode of Traitors, but everyone raves about it. Maybe I need to give it a watch. 😘💜

I’m with you on most of these. I absolutely hate giving speeches. This is my husband biggest pet peeve: the smell of the house after frying fish. I love fish and seafood, but it has to be cooked outside on the grill. It doesn’t give me many options.

Ooh, grilled seafood is good. I do love cooking seafood at home, but it’s winter here and the house is closed, so the smell tends to linger.

We have cold weather, but we can still open up all the doors and windows. I usually cook my salmon or sea bass in foil pouches on the grill. I squeeze lemon on it, smother them in mayo and sprinkle dill. My dad used to cook the salmon we’d catch the same way. The mayo makes it moist.

ALL OF THESE!! I especially hate when the robots won’t let you talk to a person and dental xrays. Do you happen to have mandibular tori? I learned just last month *that’s* why dental xrays are so painful for me. Also, at first I was upset to see the Costco logo, but agree–I like the products and prices, but the crowds and smell of sample foods and rude people make the experience not-ideal.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I’ve never heard of a mandibular tori before! I always gag when they stick the x-ray film in the sides of my mouth, and the roof is sensitive too. Definitely not a fun experience.
I’m with you on everything you said about Costco. I wish they had sensory hours like Walmart — that would be ideal.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes, the mandibular tori are harmless bony growths located on the floor of the mouth, under the tongue… so the xray pieces press against the bone. That’s a technology that need a major overhaul! lol
And I love the idea of sensory hours.
LikeLiked by 1 person
A definite overhaul! You’d think by now dental x‑rays would be much easier.
Wouldn’t that be lovely? I’d be at Costco all the time if they offered sensory hours.
LikeLiked by 1 person
A definite yes to most of these! Not just the back seat of a roller coaster for me…roller coasters, period. I am terrified of amusement park rides, even ferris wheels. I’ll go on a Merry-go-round but that’s it!
Have you tried loose, flowing linen pants in the summer…or at least a linen blend? I have a couple of pairs of those and love them.
Not sure what you mean about a phone charger that works? All ours work, so ?? (We all have Androids/Samsung Galaxy phones.)
Oh, you know I feel you on the overpriced wellness retreats. I get all excited when I see one I’m interested in…even just a one day retreat. And then I see the price and think, “Are you kidding me?!” I get it – they have to rent the space and the practitioners and spend money on food and supplies, etc…plus they need to make a little money themselves. But the prices to me always seem overly inflated.
I can’t stand Linkedin either. I thought I was the only one. ;-) I deleted it several years ago. I also hate Next Door Neighbor. I tried it a couple of times but it was like FB on steroids.
HATE cleaning my shower or the tub/shower combo! Especially since we have well water AND our shower and tub are the original of the house. They’re quite stained. We’ve tried everything and they never look clean.
Can you believe as much as I have horrible dental anxiety, the xrays don’t bother me?
Costco…ugh. The parking lot is a nightmare, the customers are always so angry and rude, the food demonstrators are annoying and seem horribly bored (I’m sure they are)…just total bad energy in that place. Whenever we need something from there, I send Brian, lol. He doesn’t mind that place.
xoxo

I just don’t love the look or feel of linen on me — it must be a sensory thing.
We go through chargers so fast in this house, and I don’t know why. Maybe having a teenager around? You and Bijoux are making me wonder if we just don’t have good chargers. I thought this was a common thing — or maybe it’s an iPhone thing.
Dental x-rays always make me gag. Literally gag. 🤣
Not a fan of the Costco experience either. I try to go early in the morning.

I have no idea on the chargers thing. We just get ours off Amazon! Too funny about the dental xrays – the tech was telling me last time I was there that she has a lot of patients who hate them and have more problems with getting those than numbing shots! So you’re not alone. :-)

Kari, you’re right – we’re human after all. Therefore, we each have things we love and don’t love. Which also includes feeling grateful. I think we can be grateful and dislike something too.
“ai-generated music” – OH MY GOD, I cannot believe you included that on your list because I feel the same way. In fact, about two weeks ago, I discovered a female vocalist who I instantly went head-over-heels in love with her sultry and soulful voice. I also thought she was absolutely gorgeous. Come to find out, she is AI generated (her voice AND her looks). When I found out, I went numb. In case you’re interested, her name is Liora Twani. You can find her on YouTube. Look for the song “You’re Losing Me” – P.S. and listen to her with headphones.
Others you and I agree on…
“influencers” — (and the industry I’m in, I’m around so-called influencers ALL. DAY. LONG). Oy vey!
“burp and fluid” — YUCK!
“leaf blowers” — (and living in a city, you’d think I would never have to hear that). But people use them all the time to blow LITTER from the front of their stores/restaurants. And simply blow it into the streets!
“having to give a speech” — it’s funny because it never bothered me when I was a theater actor and performed onstage. However, ask me to stand up and give a speech?!?! I FREAK OUT!
Fun and fabulous post! I love discovering more and more things about you, my friend!
Oh, and one (of many things) I don’t love (I actually despise it) is SUMMER. But I think you alread knew that. LOL!

This is so relatable. So many made me chuckle or nod my head. I sat next to a guy on the plane home from Tampa and before take off he had a VERY loud conversation on his phone. While everyone was boarding and we were all captives and it was annoying. I’m curious why you don’t like it when people say they are praying for you? I def appreciate when someone tells me they are remembering me in their prayers. Lorelai Gilmore, bah ha ha.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes, the captive phone conversations should be illegal. There’s something about being trapped on a plane that makes it extra maddening. 🤣
And that’s a really fair question about the praying thing. I know it’s almost always said with good intentions, and I don’t doubt the kindness behind it. For me, it can feel a little distancing, like the care is being handed off somewhere else instead of staying right here in the conversation. I tend to feel more comforted by presence, listening, or plain words. It’s less about rejecting anyone’s beliefs and more about how I personally experience care.

Your list made me chuckle, and I have to say that I agree with all of them! I don’t like any rollercoasters, no matter which seat I’d get. I hate it when people don’t use their turn signals. I also don’t like summer because of hot weather, bugs, and smoke from forest fires. “It must be nice.” is just a terrible thing to say to someone. Sometimes it’s good to vent!

The ending of almost all Stephen King books.

We are so fortunate (and spoiled) in the UK by our wonderful, entirely free-to-use National Health Service. It horrified me to discover just how much it costs to have a baby in the US, let alone anything else. I have used private medical services in the UK a few times, but remain hugely grateful that the NHS is still standing (if only just).

We dislike a lot of icky things..lol. my top 3 that you listed: artificial flowers outside (why do older people seem to do this?) anything to do with the dentist (MAJOR anxiety. I have to get 2 teeth pulled and an implant. I will have to rob a bank) and cooking smells (unless it’s baking, and not cooking) I don’t make certain foods just because of the smell, even though I enjoy eating them. I’ll order from a restaurant..lol. This post was actually enjoyable!!

We DO dislike a lot of the same things! I LOVE THAT. This is why I share these posts—because there’s a lot of camaraderie in what we don’t like too!
I don’t know why older people love their artificial flowers outside. The only thing I can think of is ease—not having to bend over to plant things, and maybe saving money?
Another thing with dentists I don’t love: dental insurance feels like a scam. What’s the point if I’m paying for most of it?
I especially don’t love cooking smells in the winter! But like you, I love the smell of baking.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this post. 💜
