  1. Oh, Kari:  You are my people. I wonder how much friendship is based not being bad at the same kinds of things? I also struggle with math, small talk, and singing. Others that you don’t mention:  getting started with tasks I’m not good at, spatial reasoning (I hate assembling Ikea furniture!), playing politics/schmoozing others, doing things I find boring (even when they are important things to do!). I love this topic as a prompt for a poem. If I were still teaching, I’d use this with my students. I think there’s power in naming and sharing what we can’t do well.

    1. And you are mine, Rita. 😘

I love that we both struggle at the same things.
I also hate assembling IKEA furniture, playing politics/schmoozing, doing things that I find boring.

Please write that poem. I also think there is power naming and sharing things we can’t do well. I might make another list. ❤️

  2. I can totally relate with not being good at not taking things personally and tech stuff. I was going to ask you why you think you’re not good at giving suggestions and then I wondered if you just don’t like doing it. I was thinking how I hesitate to give suggestions because I don’t want to steer anyone wrong or have them come back and say my suggestion sucked. Is that why you think you’re not good at it? If so, maybe it’s a HSP thing. Maybe we can give options instead of suggestions?

    1. That’s a good question! I think it IS an HSP thing! I gave suggestions and was told that they weren’t liked or were not a good fit, which I took personally. 🤣

So…I’m not bad at giving suggestions; I’m just bad at taking things personally. I’m laughing so hard right now.

  3. This had me chuckling as I nodded along, Kari! Early every single one of things rings true, except I’m strangely good at math and saving money. The only thing I would add to your list for myself is “girl stuff”–I never learned how to fashion an outfit, style hair, or apply makeup. I’m not really interested in those things… but it makes special occasions challenging.

    1. I appreciate your ability to do math as well as save money! I believe those two things go hand in hand…🤣

I think now that I have freedom to choose my hairstyle and makeup, I am more interested than I was in the 80s. ❤️

  4. Ha – not taking thing personally. IMPOSSIBLE.

    Also impossible: board game instructions!

    I am not good at:

    Whistling.

    Anything that requires hand/eye coordination.

Speaking in/to groups of more than two people.

    Keeping my desk tidy.

    Being succinct.

(I am an excellent parallel parker when no one is watching. I am also excellent at doom spiraling.)

  5. Directions in general– not just board games but giving driving directions, following someone else’s when they try to rattle off a few steps all at once… I’m just lost then! I agree wit most of your list but I am great with math and card games. I will literally drive blocks out of my way to find a way to get where I am going without turning left in a busy intersection!

  6. This is an interesting list to read – and to do myself! I hear you on quite a few of yours, especially math, sitting still, not taking things personally, and small talk.

Hmm, some of mine would include anything involving coordination (I’m looking at you, aerobics!), finishing a project once I’ve started (I tend to do several projects at once instead of just concentrating on one project), putting furniture together/assembling something, untangling a necklace or string (too impatient!).

    1. It’s not at all surprising that we share many in common. ❤️

I struggle with all of the ones you mentioned, too! I’m embarrassed to admit how many jewelry items I’ve gotten thrown away after giving up when they became tangled. 🤣

  7. Kari, there are quite few on your list that is on mine – math, asking for help when I need it, navigating traffic in large cities.

I also SUCK at being a waiter. I’ve tried being a server many times and I just DO NOT have a talent for it. I can never remember what people ordered, so when I bring the food back to the table, I have to ask what everyone ordered. And I alway found that odd because when I was doing live theater, I had no problem remembering pages and pages of dialogue and words to songs.

FUN post, my friend. I love discovering more things about you!

    Have a faaaaaaaaabulous week! X

    1. It’s no surprise that we share so many in common. ❤️

I would also suck at being a waiter. Although, I think your personality would be perfect for it.

Have a wonderful week as well, my friend! 😘

  8. I share running with you, but I’m pretty good at the rest of the stuff.

Watching parallel parking fails was super fun to watch at my last home! My neighbor would call.me over to watch with her.

  9. This is a hoot. I am with you on tech stuff of any kind. I take things personally to a fault and I cannot sing. I told my kids that Billie Eilish’s song that just won an award could be sung by anyone – including me. It’s just whispering. I can whisper.

    My list would also include:

sleep (exhibit A) – kidding, I’m great at sleep, but my doc told me I should take my antacid in the am instead of at night, and here we are. 2:45 am and still awake. Hmpf.

    knowing how to do makeup

cleaning house – no surprise visits, please

    reading fast

    learning a foreign language

    spelling

    home decor

  10. I have no sense of direction – whatsoever – having a GPS has been a sanity saver. I also have no sense of balance – even when standing still on flat ground in flat shoes, I can stutter and nearly fall.

Plus, agree with you on asking for help, maths & not taking things personally :)

  11. Ha! Ha! My list contains nearly every one of your things!
Math is definitely at the top of my list.
I feel bad for anyone who asks me for directions. They’re probably still lost.
I’m bad at social media, roundabouts, sleeping, and knowing where to put a comma.

  12. Interviews, making cocktails, not rolling my eyes when I should be more generous, making the bed, washing windows, suggesting movies, figuring out WP blocks, and sitting still on an airplane for hours. I’m sure there are more, but these are the ones off the top of my head.

  13. I’m pretty sure we’re related..lol We have a lot of things in common that we’re not good at..Math!! (my niece who’s a HS math teacher always puts my name in her story problems..haha), euchre, the technical part of social media, and parallel parking (I drive around until I find a spot I can handle) This post made me smile!

  14. i suck at making friends. it seems like such a hard process. when i read “how to win friends and influence people,” i just thought, “nope, too much work.” :)

  15. I think you are very good at writing bios! (I’m still a faithful reader btw. Just not a faithful commenter 😬). I’m a horrific matchmaker! Horror story level. 😱

  16. MATH! Lord, occasionally I feel like an idiot.

I also hate reading instructions, like for a board game or putting something together. Instructions ARE so tedious.

I’m also terrible at baking. I believe that is because I hate following directions and baking is pretty much following instructions to a T.

Hmmmm….I’m not good at speaking Mandarin, rock climbing, skydiving, piloting a plane…..should I go on?

I’m really good at laughing, smiling. talking to myself. I’m gonna make a great Old Person one day! Well, maybe sooner than later if I’m lucky.

  17. Anything mechanical. I suck at assembling things with tools, which explains my love/hate relationship with IKEA.

Tell you what I am good at, though: parallel parking! I see it on your list (and probably a lot of others would agree), but for some reason, I can PP like a champ. Even hard-to-win-over Tara will admit this!

  18. The older I get, the more I can’t handle new card or board game instructions . I’m also bad at listening to books on tape, but I’m okay with some podcasts, which doesn’t make sense. Actually, I think I just hate being read to.

The thing I’m worse at is sports. I can’t pay attention to a game nor can I participate.

    1. This is how I feel about podcasts and audiobooks, too. I thought I’d be okay with it, but I am not. I hate being read to, too! 🤣

I can’t pay attention to sports or participate. 🤣🤣.
