things i want to remember | part eighteen

if you’re here for the first time, welcome! you’ll be able to find the other parts of this series here.

1- my friend rita shared a piece with me a few weeks ago about how playing bird songs in your home benefits mental health. it’s funny because i created a playlist of bird songs soon after my dad got sick because i instinctively knew i needed the sounds of birds in my life. despite this, i rarely listened to the playlist i had created.

then rita sent me that piece, and i’ve been listening to bird songs ever since, and i’ve noticed an improvement in my mood. thank you, friend. thank you, birds.

2- i love to travel, but i hate planning trips.

3- toni basil was 38 years old when she recorded the song mickey. she’s 80 now.

4- i’d like to create an app that helps people avoid roundabouts. who’s in?

5- did you know that cheese nips were discontinued in 2020? (they did it while we were distracted). however, there is a petition to bring cheese nips back. be the change you wish to see in the world.

6- the song last christmas is sung by wham, not just george michael.

7- why are all perfume and cologne commercials so strange?

8- like a rock by bob seger is a great song that was ruined by capitalism. every time i hear it now, i think of a chevrolet truck.

9- i recently discovered doreen ketchens and i want to share her with you.

10- do you know what we’re not seeing as much of anymore? limousines.

  1. Such a great post. Many things struck a chord.

Recently, the birds outside our bedroom window began singing in the middle of the night. It surprisingly was quite nice…

Toni Basil was really that old when Mickey came out? I bet she is just as spry at 80…

Cheese Nips are so addicting… despite this, they can’t take them away… that’s too cruel…

I one got stuck in a round about… not fun!

    1. I’m happy to hear this!

That is so cool! We have a bird camera feeder, and they will sometimes show up as early as 4 a.m. When we first got the camera, it was shocking to see a bird up so early and in the dark. But it was also comforting.

RIGHT? Why are they removing our snacks without our consent? 🤣

I hate them. And we live near a lot of them. It’s annoying.

      1. We have neighbors that have hummingbird feeders. It’s always nice when I see them hover.

Our winged neighbors outside our window is a nice little family. Fortunately, their voices are pleasant. The middle of the night thing was new. Thanks for your note about your bird camera. Somehow, that is reassuring to know.

  2. why are all perfume and cologne commercials so strange? And taking this one step further, why are descriptions of perfume and cologne so strange? Like I’m supposed to know what all these scents are? I’m good knowing what tobacco and vanilla and iris and bergamot smell like but the rest… 🤔

  3. Kari, hearing “Hey Mickey” brought back SO MANY wonderful memories for me. I clearly remember when that song was released (1981) and became such a hit!

Yup, “Last Christmas” (which happens to be one of my favorite Christmas tunes) was definitely sung by Wham. In fact, you can see that in the video.

“- why are all perfume and cologne commercials so strange?”

HA! That is sooooooooooo true! Particularly the Calvin Klein commercials. They make absolutely NO sense. And stay tuned because believe it or not, my next post is about perfume/cologne/fragrance. I kid you not!

WOW, Doreen can really play that clarinet! Her whole soul is in it!

As always, FUN, FUN post, my friend! Happy Monday to you! X

    1. Me too! I loved that song!

It’s one of my favorites, too! I watched the Wham documentary and absolutely loved it. It irritates me that people only credit George Michael with the song. It is the band.

OMG! I can’t wait for that post!!!

Her whole soul! That is exactly what I said! She is playing with her soul. Yes. ❤️

Happy Wednesday to you, my friend! 😘

  4. So much to comment on here!

Byrds songs also help my mood. Especially “Mr. Tambourine Man” and “Eight Miles High.”

Seeing that your anti-roundabout post inspired my anti-roundabout post, I’ll be the first one to sign your petition.

Cheese Nips are, IMO, far inferior to Cheez-It’s, which I have eaten my entire life. I didn’t even realize they were gone, so clearly, I’m not a fan.

I’m a big Bob Seger fan, and I totally agree. I’ll never not be able to picture a damn Chevy truck every time I hear the song.

    1. Are you and my dad related? Heh heh.

Thank you! Now I only need to create a petition and an app…

I agree that Cheese Nips are inferior. They have distinct tastes and shapes. However, I like to have a options on cheesy crackers. The most important question is: which side of this is Tara on?

Bob Seger is also one of my favorites. It’s a great song.

  5. Wow! I can’t believe Toni Basil is 80! I have such good memories of that song, dancing in my bedroom, using a hairbrush as a microphone! It was so fun to watch the video.

I’m in on the roundabout avoidance app. Ugh! I hate them! I do my best to avoid them, but it always seems like a new one pops up out of nowhere to terrorize me!

  6. Toni Basil is now 80?! What the actual heck…

And definitely – the song Like a Rock is now totally ruined because of stupid Chevrolet. I bet no one ever listens to that song anymore just for pleasure.

  7. We really only see limos during prom season… and even that seems to be falling by the wayside. I too think there are many songs that have been ruined by commercialism… and now it’s all I think of when I hear them.

  8. I’m the weirdo who spends months planning a week long trip. Like 6 months. It’s fun except for booking flights.

I would have thought Toni Basil was early 20’s in that video. If google maps can help me avoid highways, why not roundabouts? Great idea!

Those perfume commercials really are bizarre. Usually sexual, but not normal sexuality🤣🤣🤣 The limo thing makes sense. I keep hoping something happens in my life where I get to ride a sprinter van!

    1. You’re not weird at all. I wish I could do this. My mom was this way, and that trait did not pass to me. My husband is very good at this, so he does most of the planning.

She looks pretty darn good for 38! I doubt I could even do a cartwheel at that age. 🤣

We can only hope to get into a Housewives sprinter van! (That’s what I call them!) I know what you could do: get The Five Juniors together for a girls’ trip!

  9. I got stuck on Toni Basil being 80 and now I’m wrecked for the afternoon maybe. My mom is 80. How was my mom the same age as Toni when my cheerleaders friends and I loved that song and video? And that video takes me right back to high school (where I was when it was popular), with those cheer moves and cheer uniforms and how was that all more than FORTY years ago? Time is so, so deeply weird and I can’t wrap my head around it any more.

I want to be with you on roundabouts because I kind of hate them, BUT:  They are safer. And it even makes sense that they are safer. And the last time you wrote about them I probably agreed with you, but I’ve thought about it since then and now I can’t be with you because I’m apparently a grownup now. God, I hope so, because if you’re doing the Toni Basil math you know I’m old, too.

    1. RIGHT?? When I learned this, I felt lied to for some reason. Time IS so deeply weird.

Fine. I believe you. However, I have a story that I forgot to tell last month.

There is a roundabout in a nearby town that’s in a residential neighborhood. For the first few weeks after it opened, people would drive straight through the roundabout because there was nothing in the middle to stop them. So it became extremely dangerous. Because of this, I now look both ways, even if there is shrubbery, flowers, or a large concrete tower.

But I believe you that it is safer.

      1. So, here is a short explanation of how/why they are safer, and I appreciate the acknowledgement that they can still be dangerous: https://www.makeroadssafe.org/are-roundabouts-safer-than-intersections/

Why for the love of god would any city make a roundabout without stuff in the middle of it? That sounds like the absolute worst idea ever! Also, even though I’ve conceded that they are better, I still hate driving through them. I always feel like I’m doing it wrong. Probably because I probably am.

        (Look! I didn’t stutter!)

  10. How joyous listening to Doreen Ketchens’ rendition of a favourite number of mine. I was really enjoying her clarinet playing, only to discover what a great voice she has too. Thanks Kari :)

  11. I did not know that cheese nips are no longer a thing. I laughed but I agree . . . it happened when we weren’t looking.

The bird song info is so interesting. I might start inviting Alexa to were made me with bird songs.

The fact that the woman who sang the Mickey song is 80 makes me feel so old. Thanks. ;)

  12. I love the thought of listening to birds all day!! I actually think there is one available on my Amazon/Sonos app. I’ll have to investigate.

Cheese Nips. Cheese Nibs. Cheese It’s. I love them all and how can we live without them?

I was just thinking this morning that I might take the Stretch Limo to my gym workout today!

I feel so fortunate to be married to a part-time travel agent, because I also hate the planning process.

    1. Definitely investigate. I imagine you have beautiful bird sounds where you live. I enjoy traveling to new places and hearing bird songs that differ from where I live.

I can eat cheese in any form. 🤣

      Do ITTT.

Mike also plans our travel. Aren’t we lucky?
