good gnus and questions, too

it’s my birthday month, so i’ve decided to publish fun little posts among my regular posts.

i love when ally writes a post that includes fun little links or a list of questions to answer.

in her post, she mentioned gnu’s, which made me think of the character gary gnu. do you remember him?

also in that fun post, she featured questions from james lipton’s inside the actor’s studio. i’m not sure how many of you remember that show, but i really enjoyed his interviews.

anyway, he would ask his guests these ten questions at the end of every interview. these questions are from the proust questionnaire, which i may tackle at some point.

you can read ally’s answers here.

    1. Happy belated Birthday! I hope it was a good one. About Gary Gnu: Yes! I remember that. 🤣

I really like your answers. I think a mortician would be a really fascinating job.

      Fried chicken. YES.

  2. Thanks for the shoutout. I like your answers to the questions, we overlap on a few of them. Excellent answer to the heaven question: unlimited supply of coffee, pie, and books! I hope we’re seated near each other, I’ll share my wine if I can have some of your pie… and a few books. Happy Weekend, Kari!

  3. Oh right there with you; I could never be a nurse or anything in the medical field. I do not have the patience or the stomach for it.

  4. Kari,

I LOVE your vision of heaven. I need some tea–and I get to drink real, caffeinated tea, with my favorite honey–but I don’t think I’d add anything else to your utopia. And happy birthday to you! I hope you find all kinds of small and big pleasures in the coming weeks.

I also love that roller derby is your other profession! We have a roller derby team here in Portland (another reason for you to visit!), and a former member wrote the best older-kid graphic novel called Roller Girl. I loved it and I’m an older kid, so you might like it, too. Or maybe you’ve already seen it; it was pretty big right around the time Ella would have been the perfect age for it.

If I could have another career (and know I would be successful at it), I would love to do something creative with my hands–painting or fiber art or making sculptures. I want to make beautiful things, especially out of things that might not be. I’m currently obsessed with lindenacresdesign on Instagram. Go see what she’s doing with old books! I’d love to spend my days in a warm studio space cluttered with making materials. It will, of course, have big, grand windows and I’d get to listen to music and make cool things. (Thank you so much for sharing your spring playlist. I love it!) OK, maybe I will add this to your vision of heaven. :-)

    1. Thank you, friend.

Roller Girl! Oh man, I will check it out. There are roller derby teams in Chicago and Milwaukee. There may be some in-between. I follow several of the members on TikTok. It’s a lot of fun to watch.

I’d like to open a bookstore/plant store/pet store/pie shop/reiki/massage therapy/community center. All of this is pay-what-you-can. That is my dream.

  5. I like your answers, Kari! I have a hard time answering these kinds of questions, but I’m with you on birdsong as a beautiful noise, should being an unpleasant word, and I couldn’t handle being a nurse or in the medical profession. (And I’m so grateful to those who do that work!)

    1. I sometimes have a hard time with these, too.

After what my dad went through, I am so grateful to those who do. I’ll say this; there is a nursing shortage. It worries me for the future.

  6. Happy Birthday Month! Gnus remind me of my childhood because of a What’s Gnu? game I had when I was a kid. I will attempt your questionnaire, but roller derby?? LOL, that is VERY unique!

    1. Cerise (I was so proud of myself when I learned how to roll my R’s in French – it means cherry)
    2. Easy-peasy
    3. Music
    4. Insecurity
    5. The Fuck??? (said in a questioning voice)
    6. Acoustic guitar
    7. Motorcycles
    8. Mediator
    9. Nurse (I was so confused when my oldest daughter knew at age 2 that that’s what she wanted to be and then she became one)
    10. Welcome Home!

    1. Thank you! Can you see me on skates now? Scary. 🤣

A mediator is a very interesting job. I like the idea of encouraging an agreement between two people. Seeing the others’ perspective.

I am so impressed that your daughter has known what she wants to be since she was TWO! That is very cool.

  7. APRIL BABIES YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH

I totally missed Ally’s post, but then I realized it was published when I was away, so that explains that. Okay, here are my answers!

    1. I don’t know that I have a favourite, but I use the word “favourite” a lot, along with “beautiful.” I LOVE the word “Sassy” but not sure if it’s because that was the name of my favourite magazine as a teen (TELL ME IT WAS YOURS TOO!)
    2. Again, not sure if I have a least favourite, but my least favourite phrase is “shut up.”
    3. Nature, people, music.
    4. Passive-aggressiveness
    5. Goddammit
    6. Rex’s super crazy panting when he’s excited, or when he wakes up in the morning to see me, or literally 1000 times during the day. If Barkley sounded like he does even once, I’d worry he was having a heart attack, but Rex is just an enthusiastic panter.
    7. The high-pitched squeak of silverware on china.
    8. Lol, I don’t have a profession. Can I say writer?
    9. A day care operator.
    10. Hey girl (like that meme)

    1. Yay!! What date is your birthday?

That was my favorite magazine!!! OMG.

When Anna was little, she thought “shut up” was a curse word. 💕

      You can totally say writer.

OMG- yes. All the bodily fluids…

      I love your answers. ❤️

  9. Yes, I do remember the James Lipton Inside the Actor’s Studio show. And I agree, his interviews were so good. I can still find them on YouTube.

My favorite word is Fuck too. Except I like to say it in 3’s, “Fuck…fuck…fuck!”

I love the sound of rain.

I don’t like (hate) the sound an iPhone makes when receiving a text. It’s the sound of a bird whistling/chirping – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tFks8ovsI8 . One time I was standing next to a guy in a wine store and he kept getting text after text after text after text with that bird chirping sound. I literally thought I was going to lose my mind, grab his phone, and smash it on the ground. I didn’t though. LOL!

I would not like to have any job in the food industry profession. I love food, love to make food, and love to eat food. But I don’t like preparing and/or serving food to others in a restaurant environment.

I would love to attempt being a lawyer. I’ve alway been fascinated with law.

FUN post, my friend. I love discovering more things about you! Have a faaaaaabulous weekend! X

    1. Hearing you say Fuck Fuck Fuck makes me laugh so hard. I also like Fuckety Fuck Fuck. Also, FOF…fuck off, fuckers.

I HATE THAT SOUND, TOO. We’d get along splendidly in person.

I worked at McDonald’s during high school. I 100 percent agree.

I love discovering things about you, too. 😘❤️

  11. When we were kids, my brother and I formed a “band” and made up a song called, “If You Knew a New Gnu, What Would You Do With Your Old Gnu?” I had an interesting childhood…

I love the sound of rain and distant train whistles in the middle of the night.

  12. All I could think about when I read your answers was how much I’ve been complaining recently, my friend. The weather! The strange work hours! That weird tweak in my neck! It was a nice reminder that I need to reframe these things. Summer is coming! I have a job I like! I get to do interesting new exercises to fix my neck! Thanks for the gentle nudge, inadvertent though it might have been on your end.

    1. This made me laugh so hard. I can also complain a lot. After I finished writing this, I thought about all the complaining I do. Isn’t that a psychological thing? Disliking traits in others that you have? 🤣

A dose of complaining here and there is good for the soul.

  13. This is great. Gary gnu. Ha.

My dad begged me to be a nurse. My oldest sister is a nurse and he said he wanted another nurse. I was like ‘So, I pass out at the sight of blood. How d’ya think that will end?’ I have thought very recently about becoming a nurse. I guess I assume I will be able to overcome my issue. But at this?stage of the game, I think that ship has?sailed.

    1. It’s so interesting that he’d want his children to pursue a specific profession.

I think you can be anything you want at any age. So, if you want to become a nurse, go for it. 😘

  14. Happy Birthday Month!

James Lipton was the best! Will Ferrell’s James Lipton was another fav

Loved your answers & shared so many. Should is a crap word for sure.

    My answers:
    1. I don’t have one. Love too many. French has some zingers.
    2. I really hate “Courageous”
    3. People talking about things they’re super interested in. I love that. Also nature, animals. I need nothing when I’m surrounded by nature & animals.
    4. Closed minds
    5. No favs. There are too many good ones!
    6. The wind sighing through the forest
    7. The sounds of the ICU – whining lights & machinery, constant beeps, sadness
    8. Finance work for small businesses & folks working towards a goal. Being part of making someone’s dream happen.
    9. Nurse (for so many reasons)
    10. Kari, your answer is my answer but also would love to hear:
That hunch you had about hummingbirds was spot on

    1. Thank you, friend!

I loved Will Ferrell’s impression of him. So funny.

Oh, Maddie, I love your answers. When I said I didn’t want to be a nurse, I was hoping not to offend any nurses.

The sounds of the ICU- I’ve recorded sounds in the hospital on my phone so that others could hear them. Those sounds will live in my head forever.

  15. I adore your answers and mirror many of them. (I loathe complainers!) But girl, I did not see Roller Derby coming! That’s a hoot! YOU are a hoot. :)

I want to be greeted by all my past critters, family and friends. It’s gotta be getting crowded (and maybe boring?) up there.

Sending you lots of love. XOXO
