things i want to remember | part 21

if you’re here for the first time, welcome! you’ll be able to find the other parts of this series here.

1- i realized the other day that i don’t read magazines anymore, which makes me sad. i used to love getting my magazine subscriptions in the mail every month. do you still get magazines in the mail? (or at the store?)

2- there is a tiktok account dedicated solely to accidents that occur at a roundabout in milwaukee.

3- do you know what is absolutely obnoxious? i look my absolute best when i don’t have anywhere to go.

4- after watching many 70s and 80s documentaries, mike and i realized how invasive and inappropriate the media was back then. it made me wonder if society is actually improving in terms of boundaries and compassion.

5- people who jog or run in humid weather—i can barely walk into the grocery store when it’s humid. what’s your secret?

courtesy wikipedia

6- do you remember “like cola?”

7- i was obsessed with enya in the 90s.

8- did you (do you) have an imaginary friend? mine were ann tobato and janet jumper. it’s fascinating how children, not adults, are the ones who have them.

8- i just listened to my final podcast for the first time since it was published in january 2023. so many things…i mentioned chat gpt and explained how it worked, i talked about how i much i wanted to do yoga, but always struggled, i mentioned how excited i was with my new bird camera, and i ended by saying that i was going to work on a podcast with my dad.

big, fat, sigh.

also, i miss doing a podcast.

i have so many questions for you again. i like to keep you on your toes.

  1. I don’t get any magazines anymore and I feel like I hardly see them in stores anymore either. I often wonder that about people that can do any sort of exercise in the extreme heat and humidity. I feel like breathing takes every ounce of effort and I try to move as little as possible!

    1. I have a feeling that they might still be in stores, but we just aren’t noticing them, which makes me a bit sad.

I can hardly breathe in humid weather, which is why I asked the question. 🤣

  2. Wait…you had a podcast? I didn’t know that! That’s so cool!

I don’t subscribe to any magazines, and I don’t even think the grocery stores I frequent have them. I used to love magazines! I’ve never heard of Like Cola. How funny! I was also obsessed with Enya. I didn’t have an imaginary friend. Interesting questions, Kari!

    1. I did! It was a lot of fun, for me anyway!

I love magazines too. My mom still has magazine subscriptions and she buys them when she goes to the store. I love that she still does that.

I love that you were also obsessed with Enya. ❤️

  3. Magazines? Nope… not for many years.
    Like cola? Nope.
I looooove(d) enya! Esp in the soundtrack to LA Story.
I was told that I conversed, loudly, with an imaginary friend but I have no memory of it/them. Now I talk to my cats.

      1. LA Story is extreeeeemely 80s and makes fun of all thing “LA”. It probably has little appeal to anyone who hasn’t lived in the area, but it’s one of my favorite films.

  4. I loved magazines and newsletters for hobbies like gardening or horses.

Remember Sassy? Somehow I got sent the first few issues (free I think?). It was so much fun at launch.

But the oddball hobby newsletters were the best. Just normal people writing stuff with little filter & no ad content.

The secret to humidity is that your body acclimates to it. It takes time. I remember being caked in salt (from sweating) and being surprised I’d gotten that hot.

Maybe that’s why heat stroke is so dangerous. It can sneak up on you if you’re used to heat/humidity?

  5. I love magazines! I used to have an obsession with them and read at least 25/month. I’m sad that they are fizzling out. I still have subscriptions to Real Simple, BH&G, Reader’s Digest, Country Living, hmm… a few others that escape my mind right now because I haven’t received any this month. I’ve noticed that there are some months where my magazines don’t appear. I’ve complained to the PO, but that falls on deaf ears. Whenever I’m around a B&N, I go in the magazine section to browse through magazines I like, but don’t want to buy, esp the expensive British magazines. Anyhoo, I get my subscriptions through Discount Magazines. Cheaper than going through the magazines directly.

I get a kick out of the “inappropriateness” of the TV shows and commercials from the 60’s – 80’s. More boundaries and compassion now? Mmm, I dunno about that. Social media has kind of ruined all that stuff.

Those who jog/run in humid weather (not moi, that’s for sure…just the running itself, lol)…it’s usually those who run no matter the weather. They simply just do it. I have a friend and a cousin who are runners, and they ignore the weather. They don’t have any excuses. I give them a lot of credit!

    Nope, don’t remember Like cola.

I didn’t have an imaginary friend. My son, Tim did when he was 7. His friend’s name was Tommy. Tommy appeared soon after my dad, Tom died. Isn’t that cool?!

    1. I love that you read so many magazines! I enjoyed all of those too and now I’m a fan of their websites as well.

I’m referring more to the reporters themselves. The news is so different now compared to back then. Do you remember when news included editorials? Reporters don’t even get to share their opinions anymore. It’s such a different era.

I agree, they deserve credit. I wish my body adapted to weather changes better. Considering I’ve lived in places with all four seasons my entire life, you’d think I’d be used to it.

Oh my gosh, I love the story about Tim’s imaginary friend. It gave me chills. ❤️

  6. Podcasts. Fun when you have something to say.

Kim and I are about to start one called “Two Turds in a Punchbowl” (she named it). I did one that was a Top 40 countdown for years, but it was so labor-intensive that it stopped being fun.

I miss TV Guide. Not the watered-down version they sell today, but the one that was the size of a peanut butter sammich with the black and white local listings. It was full of news about all types of shows, plus it was functional, and if you couldn’t do the crossword then you must have been in a coma.

    1. Very fun!

I used to love the TV Guides that came out at the start of each new season. Do you remember those? They had all the new television shows listed. My uncle collected them, but after he passed away in 1994, we never knew what happened to his collection. I’d give anything to see some of those again.

  7. I still get Midwest Living magazine, but that subscription is expiring soon and I probably won’t renew. Whenever I drop by the library though, I usually check out 4-5 magazines at a time.

I’m still obsessed with Enya! What’s your favorite song? Mine’s “On Your Shore” because it played such a pivotal role in a moody scene from “LA Story.”

    Liked by 4 people

    1. My mom also gets Midwest Living—I love that magazine! I always forget to check out magazines at the library, so thanks for reminding me!

I walked down the aisle to Enya’s “Watermark.” Choosing a favorite song is like picking a favorite child, Mark, but I suppose I’d have to go with “Caribbean Blue.”

    2. Last weekend, there were hundreds of complaints about “booming” sounds in El Segundo. I thought about the LA Story line “deep, sustained, booming sounds”.

Both of the scenes with Enya music make me cry.

      1. A couple months ago, I went to a screening with the director. After the movie, he gave lots of insight… of which I remember nearly nothing! I got him to sign a poster with something about El Pollo Del Mar. That, and L’Idiot, are 2 of my favorite jokes!

  8. “i used to love getting my magazine subscriptions in the mail every month.”

Me too, Kari! In fact, one of my favorite things to do (and purchase) in Barnes & Noble and Borders Bookstore, were the magazines. Sometimes I would purchase a coffee and a scone from the cafe, and read magazines for HOURS.

And I also used to love to read the magazines on the air plane if I was flying somewhere. I especially loved taking the SEX quizzes in Cosmopolitan magazine and then seeing how I scored. LOL!

No, I don’t remember Like, but I do remember Fresca!

” i was obsessed with enya in the 90s.” — Me too! And I still listen to her on YouTube.

FUN and FANTASTIC post, my friend! Have a awesome week!

We finally got a break from the heat. Today is was glorious. :) And NO humidity!

    1. I used to love the magazine section in bookstores—so many cool options to choose from!

Absolutely! Cosmo had the best quizzes! Oh my gosh, that brings back such a vivid memory. I’d visit our neighborhood Walgreens in my early 20s after work, picking up a pack of cigarettes, a couple of magazines, some makeup, and maybe a snack. Then I’d come home, read, eat, drink, and smoke! 🤣

      Fresca! They still make it!

I’m still a big fan of Enya!

We got a break from the humidity over the weekend, and I’m so glad you did too! Enjoy! 😘❤️

  9. I only pick up magazine when I’m at the airport. They’ve become a plane thing. Love Enya. Like the idea of yoga but not doing it. And get back to that podcasting! It’s calling you. Hugs, C

    1. I totally agree! There’s something special about reading a magazine on a plane.

I love her music so much. In the 90s, I once had a guy friend over at my apartment who heard it and asked, “Is this church music?” I was like, “Leave. Now.”

I felt the same way about yoga for a long time, thinking my body could never do it. A year later, I’m still amazed that I’m actually practicing yoga.

      I will. 😘❤️

  10. 1. i get my magazines free on my laptop from digital downloads.
    5. while i do try to get my run in before 10am on hot/humid days, i have been known to run at 4 or 5pm. for me, it’s simply about discipline. i’m not gonna lie and say i enjoy the humidity … cause i don’t.

  11. Awww 🤗 that last one hit hard 😇 I still buy and read magazines, I don’t do subscriptions primarily because they are all instant renewal and they are a bitch to cancel.

  12. Kari, have you considered still doing a podcast? In honour of your dad’s memory, maybe? Just an idea.

I used to get magazine subscriptions and I can’t remember the last time I had one. I used to get subscriptions through the school fundraiser so I would order quite a few. I think my last subscription was Yoga Journal and it was probably around 2018 or so. My kids weren’t in elementary anymore and the magazines were just piling up.

Speaking of that and media in the 80s, I do think that things have gotten a lot better in some ways. Worse in others, but I think there is so much more diversity now than there ever was when we were kids. Magazines were all we had to go by, in terms of fashion and beauty, and as I recall the faces/ bodies were pretty homogenous.

Also let us never forget that the British media caused Princess Diana’s death!

Anyway, I love podcasts and I would love listening to whatever you have to say. xo

    1. I love the idea of creating a podcast in honor of my dad—what a wonderful suggestion! Thank you!

I really miss the days when magazines would arrive in the mail. Checking the mailbox just doesn’t have the same excitement anymore. 😔

I completely agree with this perspective, 100%!

OH YES! Omg, they were relentless!

Thank you so much, friend. I appreciate this. 😘❤️

  13. I used to manage production of a magazine and read so much research on its decline as a medium, and it worried me so that I can’t even enjoy them now. I’m too busy analyzing the advertising-to-editorial ratio and nonsense like that.

My imaginary friend was named Doggie. I had a real dog, a basset whom I loved, but Doggie went with me everywhere, and I especially appreciated him at sleepovers.

    Long live imaginary friends!

  14. I’m not sure if I knew you did podcasts although I have a vague memory of you mentioning it during the time I’ve been following your site. When I clicked on that link and saw how many you did, I kinda felt like I missed out – although honestly I don’t listen to many podcasts but maybe I’ll listen to one of yours … it would be fun to hear your voice. As someone else responded, I too wondered if you would ever want to do them again?

    1. You always know how to lift my spirits. I should revisit your comments for those tough days. 🤣

I’m thinking about giving it another shot. I tried once before but had some trouble with it—it’s not quite like it used to be. Maybe I’ll explore it again this week!

  15. I do not remember Like cola. I sometimes run on hot humid days. My secret is to run EARLY. Or skip it and run the next day. I never subscribed to magazines, but I did enjoy magazines in doctor offices. Now I enjoy catching up on blogs when I’m waiting at doctor offices. Your comment about looking your best when you aren’t going anywhere reminds me of how I suddenly become desperate for a haircut, make the appointment, and the next day my hair looks like I could freakishly be in a shampoo commercial. Ugh. Sorry about you wishing you’d done a podcast with your dad. That’s hard. I hope that you take comfort in the many things you DID do with him. I think you had a special relationship. xo

    1. Do you have some kind of cooling device with you? I think I’m really sensitive to humidity—I can’t be out in it for long without getting a headache and feeling nauseous.

I love that you’ve swapped out magazines for blogs! That’s such a great approach. ❤️

Oh, I totally get the hair struggles. I recently decided to try a different cut, and I think grief might have influenced that choice. Now, I kind of regret it. My hair doesn’t look bad, but it’s definitely in shock. I wish I hadn’t asked for the change in the first place. 🤣

That’s a wonderful perspective. I’m also grateful that he and I grew much closer towards the end of his life. I hate that he had cancer, but his diagnosis gave us a lot of time together—car rides, appointments, just being in close proximity. We ended up sharing things we never had the chance to say before, and that felt like a real gift.

  16. I love paper magazines, but I don’t currently have any subscriptions. The last one I had was BHG, and I really loved it for awhile, but it got so thin. I could read through the whole thing in about half and hour. I just didn’t renew it. Maybe I need to try something else. Looking at images online just isn’t the same thing.

Had to laugh about your crusade against the roundabouts. :-) In other questions, I do not remember Like cola, and I have no idea how people run in humid weather because I cannot even WALK in it. Also, I never had an imaginary friend. Does that make me weird?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I loved BHG, too! And you’re right, it did get very thin. I also had a subscription to People magazine for many years. It became expensive, but I discovered a hack that allowed me to get it for $20 dollars per year, which was very reasonable given that People is published weekly. I haven’t picked up a People magazine in a very long time. Someone mentioned reading magazines on a plane, and I do love doing that.

Wisconsin LOVES roundabouts for some reason. 🙄
We had it in Ohio in the 80s, and I liked it. But I just realized it was caffeine- free cola, which might explain why it didn’t do so well.
Humidity is the worst. This summer has been really bad here.
I don’t think it makes you weird at all! 😘

      Like

      1. Yes, they’re here. The worse ones are three or four lane circles with drivers driving 55 mph while getting off of or going onto a divided highway. The city streets that form part of the roundabout have a posted limit of 35 mph. It’s frightening no matter which way you’re going.

  17. ❤️ Your Podcast! ❤️ I still remember when you said “Everybody. Has. Trauma.”

It both cracked me up 😄 & made me think 🤔

I wish you and your Dad had your podcast together for so many reasons. *Hugs*

    1. I always think of you when I think about my podcast. I think you commented on one about Cracker Barrel, and it made me very happy. I’m not sure why I remember it, but I love that I do! I feel like everybody DOES have trauma. I had big thoughts back then…🤣

So do I, Maddie. There’s a lot to unpack there. I will take those hugs. 😘

  18. I don’t get magazines, but I miss them. My sister had some random copy of a Costco magazine on her dining room table when I was there last weekend and I couldn’t stop myself from flipping through it.

That roundabout! Crazy! I was mesmerized and really enjoyed the car that was going so fast, it basically took the diameter of the roundabout. Sheesh. I wonder how many people are injured there.

  19. I don’t get any magazines, but I also miss them. It took me 3 reads of #3 to understand what you were saying. I thought at first you meant that you TRY to look your best, even when you have nowhere to go. Now I understand! And yeah, I’ve noticed I have really good hair days when I have no where to go :)

Is media no longer invasive?? I feel like we are being lied to by every single media outlet, so I’m not sure it’s any better?

My husband jogs in humid weather and it freaks me out that he’s going to have a heart attack. I cannot even go for a walk in humidity. I have to go at a snail’s pace, so why bother?

I didn’t have an imaginary friend, but my oldest daughter did. Her name was Marksie. Whenever we sat down to dinner, my daughter would say, “Ding Dong! Marksie’s here!” and she’d run to the front door. It only lasted about a year. I think it was a coping mechanism for her when I had my second child.

I miss your podcast, too! XO I think I’m all caught up commenting on your posts!

    1. I’ve started embracing the idea of looking my best, even when I have nowhere to go.

It’s better here, but maybe not everywhere. It also depends on the news outlet—I should’ve mentioned that too.

I completely agree with you on all of this.

I love that she would announce Marksie’s arrival! That’s just adorable.

Psst—I just recorded a new episode on Wednesday. I’m still figuring out how to share it on the blog, though. It’s a new platform, so I’m working on it.

  20. I used to LOVE magazines! When I was a kid, I had subscriptions to HIghlights and Ranger Rick, then graduated to Sassy and Seventeen (my mom wouldn’t subscribe me to YM, even though I wanted that so much). I used to love going on plane rides because they were the perfect excuse to buy Cosmo and Glamour and Redbook. So fun!

I share your humidity feelings. I WILT when it’s humid. Yuck.

Oh the podcast episode must have been such a gut punch. Although I do like the idea that that version of you — making plans with your dad — is still out there.

    1. I also LOVED Highlights and Ranger Rick! OMG, this takes me back! As teenagers, my friend and I loved reading YM while tanning in her backyard! Magazines bring back so many good memories, and I’m glad we’re talking about them. ❤️

      Wilt. YES.

I like the idea of that, too, Suzanne.

I enjoyed your podcast. We all have different goals, aspirations and we rarely meet them, so don’t be so hard on yourself.
