For those who won’t be listening, I mentioned that my mom underwent extensive surgery on Tuesday. Her neck had to be reconstructed after four discs were removed. She did wonderfully and is now on the long road to recovery. She will also have back surgery in November, and after that is done, she will be better than all of us. 🙂

You’re such a supportive group here, so I’d appreciate it if you could keep her and my dad in your thoughts as we help her through the healing process.

I also discussed thinking outside the box in terms of ideas for exercise and dancing to release trauma in the body.

There is such a thing as trauma release exercise (TRE). My type of dancing isn’t TRE, but it does release stress and has helped me. I figured it could be useful to some of you as well. Personally, I find it far easier to dance to music I enjoy every day than to get on the treadmill or complete a workout routine.

In addition, I mentioned a YouTube video for daily somatic healing dance. Here it is:

Remember, think outside the box!

Side note- you can listen to whatever music you like. The song she plays isn’t something I’d choose. But it’s a great way to release all of that trauma that is built up inside of you.

So, my question for you is, how do you let go of your trauma? How have you dealt with it? Because we have all been traumatized at one point or another. None of us are immune to it. Help a fellow human being out by sharing how you get rid of yours.

I promised to share some music from my Hormonal Balance playlist. There was more to my playlist than just songs. It told a musical story about my hormone-fueled existence, from period to menopause. Because I had so much fun creating it, here are a few of my favorites.

  1. I didn’t know your Mom was going through all of this—wishing her the best in healing and feeling better. I’m sure your dad is a wonderful nurse, but does he have the appropriate outfit?

I LOVE DANCING and I do it quite often. Mine is more spontaneous as I’m listening to music ALL THE TIME and sometimes a song will come on and I just can’t help myself. I’m glad that you are feeling better and getting your groove on.

Also, I HATE flies more than anything and I wish my dogs would try to kill them instead of me doing it.

Going to put on your playlist and shake what my mama gave me.

    1. Well, the neck surgery was very unexpected. My dad takes such good care of her. We all are pitching in, but he’s the best nurse ever. However, you have inspired me with a fun idea for him though…;)

My dancing began as spontaneous, but I make time for it every day. I’m bitchy when I don’t have time for it, hence the name of the playlist. 😉

My dogs are the worst fly catchers I’ve ever seen.

      Shake it, girl!

      1. Check out Dr. Deb Kern, she teaches PranaShakti dance. I am a member of her sisterhood, but she also offers 2-3 Zoom dances a week that you can join for a very reasonable fee. With my work schedule I am rarely able to join live, but I dance to the recording she sends. It is spiritual dance for all, but most of us a women in our age demographic.

  2. Will definitely keep your mom in my thoughts & send her (and your whole fam) positive vibes. I’m glad she’s already seeing improvement. She must have a wonderful doc and medical team. Must be reassuring to know your mom is in good hands.

Kari you wise woman. You got me with the *Kari lowers voice & speaks with authority*: Real Talk “trust me you have trauma” part of your podcast. Me before listening but after reading your podcast preview: “Trauma? Hmm. I can’t say I have any ‘trauma’….” Me listening to your podcast: “ohhhhhhhhhhhhh traaauuuma”. Like literally that morning (before seeing/hearing your podcast) I had a whole phone convo about traumatic sh*t. Ha! So thank you for phrasing it just right because now I get it!

I think I need you to cover *all* the new, important words. I’m over here living the Schitt’s Creek quote: “If you enjoy your hotel stay, please tweet us on facebook.” I still want to call DVDs CDs and who even uses either of those these days? What I’m saying is, I’m not hep to these rad new words. I need your informed delivery. 🙂

But I do YouTube so I have some alternatives to dancing out the trauma. Coincidentally one of my fav YouTubers (is that a word?) whose channel puts me to sleep (*wink* that’s the purpose of the channel) – she also does “energy work”. I know, I know. Yes, she is doing “reiki” at me…. long distance, from another country, recorded last month. But I tell my nervous system it is real… so it IS real. This YouTuber uses breath work and some energy work? reiki things? (I know nothing!) to release, to pluck out, to cut ties, to heal… *bingo* … trauma. I had no idea what she was getting at (thank you again for defining trauma) but darned if I don’t feel lighter, more free *and* sleepy after her videos. She does pair the “energy work” with Real Talk about letting go of things, experiences, ties that no longer serve you, lessons already learned, etc. so maybe her Real Talk is as helpful as the virtual smudging. I dunno. I just know it is all good. So maybe YouTube around for non-dancing options if your knees/feet/sciatica 🙂 ask for something less physical.

PS. I love to dance. Used to always have Dance Breaks when studying (play crazy happy music & dance crazy happy hard for a few min every few min). And my fam had so much fun playing this dance video game on the old Wiiii. Dancing is the best! If it releases trauma all the better!

    1. Thank you so much, Maddie. The thoughts and vibes must be working because she is feeling better every day! Her neurosurgeon is fantastic, and the hospital where she was treated is a spinal hospital, so she had excellent care.

      I leaned into the microphone. I had a feeling you’d notice. 🙂
I’m going to out myself here. TikTok has enabled me to become more self-aware. Soul homework is obviously an important part of it, but I’ve learned SO much since I’ve joined TikTok. I doubt many people realize how much free therapy is available on that social media platform. I’ve saved a lot of money on co-pays. I am simply paying it forward.

I’m just started with Reiki, and it’s fascinating. WHO KNEW WE HAD ENERGY ALL AROUND US? You! That’s who! Every day, I learn something new about humans. It makes being alive more enjoyable. For a long time, I didn’t see living that way. I’m trying to make up for lost time.

I love that you love to dance! It’s so much fun! Impromptu dance parties are the best. Dance parties, in my opinion, should be a thing. Like brunch, church, or school. Why aren’t dance parties a thing? Why do humans like making mundane tasks routine??

  3. Ouch, your poor mom. That sounds SO painful. I will say some prayers that her recovery is speedy and uneventful. Glad she has a great team to support her.

To relieve stress I run. I also write. And I talk – lawdy can I talk.

Ed’s good friend’s mom is a dance therapist. She works at our high school with special ed students. She’s the most peaceful and gentle soul, so you might be on to something.

    1. Thank you very much, Deb. 🙂

I completely agree with you. Taking a walk in nature soothes, doesn’t it? It helped me heal some mental wounds during the pandemic. I’ve been avoiding it this summer for reasons I can’t describe. I even told my husband there’s a stumbling block there that needs to be investigated.
