Quotes I’ve Been Thinking About

I have quotes all throughout my house. Not Live, Laugh, Love (the origin is not my cup of tea), but actual quotes from actual humans. Some are from books, others from movies, and a few are from people I know in person. I even keep a book of quotes that I add to when I find one I like.

When I’m reading a book, sometimes a quote will touch me in such a profound way that I’ll wonder how the author could possibly have known what I was going through at the time. Just being able to go back and read that quote again brings me a sense of peace and companionship, so I no longer feel quite so alone.

  3. I’m obsessed with quotes. I have a quote a day desk calendar and two magnets with quotes. My fave is Orwell….all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others

  4. Oh, I love quotes! I write them down in notebooks, too. I’ll be adding some of yours to my latest quote notebook. 🙂 I have a huge book of quotes from women – The New Beacon Book of Quotations by Women – that is organized by subject. And I’m going to be ordering Susan Branch’s (love her!) newest book, Distilled Genius – A Collection of Life-Changing Quotations. Here’s a few of my favorite quotes for you:

  6. While I can no longer tolerate tye hippue dippy metaphysical plot of Illusions by Richard Bach, I looove 99% of the quotes within it that are attributed to The Messiah’s Handbook. And the handwritten into. Short version: “What would you do if God looked directly unto your face and said, “I command that you be happy in this world for as long as you shall live.’ What would you do then?”

  7. I didn’t know the origin of Live Laugh Love, I just thought it was cheesy. I mean, I like living, laughing, and loving but.
    Favourite quotes! I’m guessing you’re thinking inspirational quotes. I have a few quotes – one from To Kill A Mockingbird, and one from The Five People You Meet In Heaven – that are my favourite book quotes. But one of my fave quotes comes from Mary Oliver, about the baby birds in her neighbourhood “They don’t even know they can fly.” Also from MO “That iron thing they carried, I will not carry.” I also love “Look around, look around, how lucky we are to be alive right now” from Hamilton.
    I was listening to a podcast the other day and someone said “Crazy things get normalized through repetition” which seemed apt for the pandemic.

    1. I’m all for living, laughing, and loving! But not for “respecting intelligent men.”

      I love all of these quotes. I also like where you get your quotes. That is something I wanted to cover in this post. I haven’t recorded a podcast in months and want to do so again, but this would be an excellent podcast topic. Where people get their quotes from is just as interesting to me as the quote itself.

      I love Mary Oliver. My favorite of hers is “You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves…”

  8. Ugh. Thanks for sharing the origin of Live, Laugh, Love. It certainly was a product of its time (and the “glory” days of the patriarchy, that the right so desperately wants to return to). Love the quotes you shared, Kari!

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed them! I doubt many people are aware of the origin. I had no idea either until I looked it up! If people knew where it originated, there’s a good chance they wouldn’t want it plastered all over their walls. 😂

  9. I love that you’re a collector of quotes!!! I keep mine on my phone but my son is a collector of words. He’s still learning how to write so he has a journal where he writes new words that he likes and it helps him try to remember them

  10. I had no idea about the origin of Live, Laugh Love. I just thought Kirkland’s wanted to make me cringe. 😳
    I don’t collect or remember a lot of quotes, but ask me about song lyrics or movie quotes! HA.
    I enjoy all I’ve ever read from Maya Angelou; she was a wise woman.

  11. I like this post so much. Quotes, well smart ones, lift me out of the doldrums every time. I especially like the Tolstoy quote, which resonates with me more as I get older. For years I’ve enjoyed Carolyn Myss and her take on life. Thanks for sharing this link.

  12. Well, I just noticed the Louise de Salvo quote you have on your home page about writing. How long has it been there? I really like it.
    My favorite quote comes from the Beetle Bailey comic strip. I think it’s “Sometimes OK is good enough.” If not, then it’s “Sometimes good enough is OK.” I wrote a post about it many moons ago which I have since deleted. When writing the post I had to look up the source of the quote that had been rattling around in my head for several years already at the time. It still reverberates!

  13. I keep a list of quotes and phases on my phone. My all time favorite is from The Color Purple: I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.
