Things I Want to Remember | Part Five

I don’t want to forget these random thoughts that have been floating around in my head, so I’ve written them down in the notes section of my iPhone. I’m sharing them with you because I suspect they may be something that you can relate to as well.

Or not.

If you’re here for the first time, welcome! You’ll be able to find the other parts of this series here.

1- I haven’t licked an envelope since that Seinfeld episode.

2- I miss the VH-1 television show Pop Up Video.

2a- I also miss the old VH-1.

3- Why does Venmo need a feed to tell me who has paid whom?

4- You weren’t an 80s nerd until you danced around your room to Hooked on Classics.

5- The same people who use exclamation points in every sentence on social media also add a space between the word and the exclamation point.

6- LinkedIn is the Facebook of the business world.

6a- So I guess Venmo is the Facebook of the material world. (Now I can’t get the song “Material Girl” out of my head)

7- If you want to discover the true climate change problem, I recommend following Celebrity Jets on Twitter.

8- Whenever Netflix sends me an email suggesting something new that I might like, it’s never something I’d like.

9- I cannot drink milk on its lonesome. It must be consumed with cereal or beside a cookie.

10- At the end of episode two of Stranger Things season one, The Bangles’ remake of the song Hazy Shade of Winter played. Season one takes place in 1983. This song was not released until 1987. Things like this bother me.

*Added after publication: Please help our dear friends. I’ve previously mentioned Kristen on my blog, along with the fact that she and her family were going through a difficult time earlier this year. Since March, her husband has been battling cancer. The Go Fund Me page goes into more detail about what has been going on in their lives. I would be eternally grateful if you could help them by contributing or sharing this for them. This will be included in all future posts until they reach their goal. Thank you so much. ❤️

1. I think the Venmo sharing is SO creepy! You can set sharing options so that it doesn’t share, and I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t do this. Probably because I am old and lived a good chunk of my life when privacy was a thing.

This post feels like a stream of consciousness thread. I like it. Also, I prefer the Bangles’s version to the Simon and Garfunkel version. I do remember when it was hot, in 1987. Back when privacy was a thing.

    1. That’s exactly what I did. It’s similar to having read receipts on your iPhone for some reason. It feels like I’m seeing something I shouldn’t be seeing.

That entire second paragraph is fantastic. Back when privacy was a thing…😂

      1. I love read receipts on a phone, but don’t understand the sharing on Venmo either. I do not care that my niece’s friend paid her for Taco Bell. I do notice that the youngins are putting ridiculous (and occasionally questionable) descriptions.

        And Madonna’s Material Girl.

I love how you share these glimpses with us. Your notes sound like a pretty fun place to be!

  2. I don’t drink milk at all; I don’t even liked whipped cream because I think it tastes like milk. I also rarely like any suggestions Netflix or Hulu sends me (either that or I’ve already watched it– usually on their network besides!). Should I admit that I don’t even have/use Venmo, Twitter, or LinkedIn?! LOL

  3. Wow! So if you send a card, do you use one of those sponge things to seal the envelope? I miss VH1 and MTV. I do still watch The Challenge on MTV. It’s one of my favorite shows.
Well, you know that I love the Plane Finder app, so Celebrity Jets could easily become an obsession for me. Talk about people having money to burn! (Note: no space)

    1. Worse- I tape the envelope!

I used to watch Road Rules, Real World, and other similar shows. I wish they ran the reruns on Hulu or NETFLIX, ahem. I am not paying for yet another service that I do not need.

You’re fine because you didn’t use all of the exclamation points in the paragraph.:)

  4. I’m on LinkedIn but I have to admit, I never go on it. Deleted my Twitter account years ago. I always wondered the same about the Venmo feed.

I don’t drink milk; haven’t in around 20-25 years. If I need milk for anything (I don’t eat cereal) like a smoothie, I use unsweetened almond milk.

Spot on about the Netflix (or Hulu or Apple TV) recommendations – has never been anything I like! Wonder if they’ve ever actually hit the target with anyone?

  5. I hate when they play music that wasn’t out during a time period. However, it does depend on if something is part of the show,or if it’s background music. I don’t remember that Stranger episode, but I think it would be bad if they played the song on the radio in the episode, but not if it just was played to end credits. Does that make sense?

    1. I am grateful to you for helping them. They’ve had a rough go of it in the past few years. They are like family to us, and I want to surround them with love and support. I knew I could count on the blogging community. ❤️

  6. HOOKED ON CLASSICS! I totally forgot about that and now I think I need to listen to it on repeat. How fun.
I haven’t watched Stranger Things but I hate when a show gets something like that wrong. It’s not hard! There are many songs that are current to the year portrayed!
I still lick envelopes but I always think of poor Susan turning green and grey as she slowly poisoned herself to death. The curse of cheap envelopes!

  7. We had rabbit ears antennae when I was a teen and I only saw MTV or VH1 while babysitting, which if I was babysitting wasn’t much because I was responsible. That means I don’t really miss it, but I do know that stuff isn’t the same as it used to be. I miss being able to sit down and watch TV. Now everything plays on platforms that I don’t necessarily pay to subscribe to. It feels unamerican. Damn it.

We have been throwing away milk, and we puzzled over this . . . then we realized that Mini literally did practically require us to own a cow because she consumed so much. We have learned to buy less while she is at college.

I am going to contribute to your friends’ fundraiser. Some people have so much to deal with, it’s heartbreaking. Um, and one more way that we are experiencing 6 degrees of separation? Norah, the one organizing the GoFundMe, is the younger sister of one of my good high school friends, Sarah. They are great people. Small world strikes again.

    1. Isn’t it heartbreaking to have those realizations when your children leave for college? I remember going through that when Anna went away for the first time her freshman year.

Omg! What a small world it is! I’ll have to tell Kristen about it.❤️
