100 Things I Love, Anxiety, Grief, Humor, Life, Nonsense

100 things i’ve googled

it all started with a journal prompt in my soul homework, asking for my last three google searches. honestly, this question reveals more about someone than the typical “what would you do in a high-pressure situation?” question in interviews.

imagine being asked, “what were your last three google searches?

i’d definitely have a more genuine answer ready, that’s for sure.

i’ve written about this before—three times, in fact. but when i tried to find those posts on my blog, they were gone. then I remembered—i had unpublished them, but thankfully, they weren’t deleted.

thanks to journaling, though, i’ve republished those three old blog posts about my google searches and wrote a new one. it’s been more therapeutic than i expected. it’s interesting to see the patterns in what i’ve been looking up and how they show my mindset at different times.

here’s a peek into my recent google searches, spanning from today all the way back to april. i’ve been inspired by my “100 things i love” list to create a “100 things i googled” list. who knows? this might just turn into a series after all.

  1. This is great! I feel like I know you better now. I’m sorry you don’t have any Amish Restaurants nearby. Lol. Curious why you were looking for that. I’ll have to figure out how to find my last 3 searches. Right now the only things coming up on my iPhone are the links from your piece. I’ll figure it out … will Google how.🤭😂

    1. I’m so glad you feel like you know me better! It’s definitely a glimpse inside my mind!

I grew up with Amish restaurants in Ohio, and one day, my mom and I were reminiscing about them. I think we were deep in our grief (and COVID) when we really started craving an old-fashioned home-cooked meal. ❤️

I had to Google how! 🤣

      1. That makes total sense regarding wanting an old-fashioned home cooked meal and thinking of Amish. Growing up a Mennonite, when I lived in Boston and Seattle I often longed for some of that doughy butter-heavy food. I guess now that I’m living back here in “Amish Country” I take it for granted and think more of Mennonite restaurants than Amish but there are a few. We have a favorite breakfast place run by Amish that’s in Intercourse, PA (no lie!)

      2. I think I knew you grew up Mennonite, but it’s still really cool to me! Have you written anything about your childhood before? I would love to learn more. There was a restaurant near where I grew up called Der Dutchman (I think), and they served really good homestyle Amish meals. I miss them.

I’ve heard about Intercourse (the town)! 🤣 I would love to visit that area and meet you!

      3. My brother’s wife is from Ohio and we went to Der Dutchman! That is so cool . I would love if you visited this area and to meet you!
I started writing a memoir about growing up Mennonite but it’s on hold now. I need more help and don’t think it’s the time. I haven’t written many pieces about it on my site. I think just one when I took a writing class last year. Now I’m curious … will have to check.😘

      4. Well the one I found includes some things about growing up Mennonite. It’s rather sad but I’ll share. No obligation to read. It’s called “Stop Talking” May 9, 2023. Now how do I send that to you …

  3. I love this idea for a post, though I’m a little scared to look at my results.

    1. Denver Broncos
    2. Frank Lloyd Wright Taliesin notable elements
    3. Cobra Kai new season
    4. Annual rainfall Ely, NV
    5. Scentless Apprentice lyrics

OK, not so bad! And all super relevant. I might do a post with fewer google searches but include a brief explanation behind them. Could be fun!

    Falco was super random.

    1. I would love to hear your results.

      Why Ely, Nevada?

Those are great results! MORE! MORE!

I was listening to Rock Me, Amadeus one day and I started Googling Falco to see what he was up to. (He’s dead). BUT he lived quite an interesting life. It was a good Google rabbit hole.

      1. Tara lived in Ely for eight years, and was there when we started dating. Her dad and sister still live there. I have been to Ely many times and was curious how their rainfall compares to Rapid City. (Spoiler alert: Ely only averages about 10″ a year, which makes sense being a high desert.)

  5. “10- joan baez bob dylan relationship 60s (i had no idea)”

Kari, it’s so ironic you googled that because I recently saw the new documentary about Joan Baez and it was awesome!

God, how I miss jukeboxes! Especially at 2AM in a diner after being at a nightclub all night (hungover), playing all the Motown songs over and over again.

My last three googles were – Phil Donahue, Why are crows so smart?, and How far is it to Yardley PA from Philadelphia?

FAB and FUN post, my friend! I love learning things about you!

    Have a superb week! X

    1. Ooh, I definitely want to watch that documentary! I need to track it down.

That sounds absolutely lovely. Such wonderful memories. ❤️

Your searches are so good! I learned from these comments that Phil Donohue passed away. 😔

I love getting to know all of YOU as well. Wishing you a fantastic week, my friend. 😘❤️

Holy crap re jami gertz!! $500M per year!?!?!?!

I think my last google, before Jami, was the cast of Wicked Little Letters. I clear my google cache after every single session and jave no idea what I’ve searched recently.

  7. My last six or so google searches were about next year’s family vacation. But the lone wolf was ‘do i need to peel yellow squash?’ The answer was No!

I remember meeting someone from Lima, Ohio a few years ago and he said they were best known for their Kewpee burgers. I’ve never had one. I recently saw that info about Jami Gertz. I always thought she was so stunning. You are not missing anything by not having an Amish restaurant nearby, unless you really love starches. I call it ‘truck driver food.’

I binged Superstore during the pandemic. So good! I use a beeswax stick for cracked heels. It really works. The brand I use is called Surgeon’s Skin. I looked up Baiertal to see how close it is to my ancestors and it’s very close – just southwest of where the majority of my family came from.

I think we talked about this before, but I love that you and I were in the same city from 1985-86. I lived in Brookwood Way apartments. How close was that to you?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Wait, you don’t have to peel yellow squash before boiling or eating it? I had no idea! I’ve never cooked or eaten squash, so I’m clueless about it.

I had no idea Kewpee’s had other locations. It’s classic truck driver food. 🤣

We’re big fans of Superstore too! I’ve been using Aquaphor all summer, and it’s been amazing. I love that our ancestors both came from Germany!

I checked out Brookwood Way apartments on Google (they’re adorable, by the way), but there’s no map showing where they are in Mansfield. Back then, I lived off Middle Bellville Road in Mansfield. It’s so cool that we were in the same city for a year—that makes me so happy! ❤️

      1. We were only about 10 miles apart. I was near the mall. My street ran between W 4th St and Park Avenue West. If you ever came up to the second floor of O’Neil’s during that time period, I was there!

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Oh wow. That is very cool. Those streets sound familiar to me, but I’ve been away so long that I can’t remember where they are. I just loved how close we were. I was 16 years old then and had just learned to drive. And we were always at the mall at the time, so I am sure I saw you. ❤️

  8. Googled:

    1. Diabetic foot ulcers (got one!
    2. Peter Marshall (“The Hollywood Squares,” may he Rest In Peace)
    3. Phil Donahue (legend…may he also Rest In Peace)

Jukeboxes … what fun! Until a few years ago, record companies still made vinyl 45s for jukeboxes. I have a few. Vinyl was so much fun to collect and it sounded better too.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. OMG—Peter Marshall was such an intriguing person! After learning about his death, I did a deep dive and discovered he led a very full life. I also found some interesting connections with my dad: he was stationed in Naples, Italy, his son played for the Cubs (which my dad loved), and there was something else, but I can’t remember due to grief, menopause, and COVID fog.

I just found out Phil Donahue has passed away too. What a year for losses.

Wow. That’s so cool. There is nothing like vinyl.

      1. Peter Marshall wrote a book about 25 years ago called “Backstage with the Original Hollywood Square,” and it’s packed with tons of pictures of the show and all kinds of stories about the stars that appeared over the years.  It’s still available and highly recommended.

Paul Lynde … He was on the show from 1966 until July 1979.  He said he left because he was just tired of it.  However, he was such a feature on the show that after he departed, the show went into a ratings tailspin, and NBC canceled it less than a year later.  The show eked out another year as a syndicated daily show, and Paul came back when the producers promised him co-star billing with Peter.

There were 3,536 daytime shows produced and NBC recorded over most of them because videotape used to be very expensive.  Eventually, most of them turned up in a vault in Los Angeles.  Someone had dubbed them onto other tapes and shelved them.

I always found it funny that Peter didn’t host any of the revivals (1983, 1986, 1998), but they never asked him.  They made it right in 2002 when they had him on for a week as the center square, and he hosted one game … like time had stood still. “The Master of ‘The Hollywood Squares'” indeed.

(By the way, I like “THE Hollywood Squares” much better than just plain old “Hollywood Squares.” It sounds better.

And now, CBS has a revival premiering in January 2025.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Yes, the new show was in the pipeline before Peter died.

Drew Barrymore is the EP and the center square.

  10. As a fan of digital breadcrumbs, this data is particularly intriguing as the motivations for searches span so many gamuts, as yours suggest. I’ve a little anxiety to look back in my history, but I most certainly will now…

(Taking a quick peek… mindful demure, tickets st louis arch, the Rubens, 2020 election map, what do you call the space at the end of a passenger train car, mendenhall glacier over the years and some unsavory political nonsense involving a vp candidate from my home state)

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yesterday, I looked up ‘mindful demure’ and ‘2020 election (day)!’ It would be so much fun to sit around a table and discuss all the things we search for on Google. ❤️

  11. I know you aren’t asking, but in my regular daily yoga practice, I hold each pose for five deep breaths, unless it’s headstand (25) or closing series (8 to 15, depending on the pose). This is traditional Ashtanga breathing holds. If I’m doing restorative, I just hold for as long as feels good/ as I have time for. This could be anywhere from 30 seconds to 20 minutes.

Last three google searches: Dennis Franz, pesto recipe, RE:books publishing house.

I also love the publishing house search. ❤️

NHK World is a great tv channel – part entertainment & part education.

  14. Kari, your list had me smiling and tearing up at the same time. It’s interesting how our searches can be histories of our lives, yet also completely random.

My last three searches were very random:

Why would someone want to catch a Paddlefish?

Is there a workable fixative that doesn’t stink?

What does one toke over the line mean?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I agree! I wanted to write about my searches to have for the future. I’m glad I republished the old posts too.

  15. This was fun. I feel like I can see inside your brain. I can’t figure out how to look up my searches, but since I’m about to host book club I’m pretty sure it was recipe related. I also know that I ask google how to spell stuff a lot. I also ask about the weather for wherever I’m gonna be. We’ve also looked up what movies to watch and/or where certain movies can be streamed. I want to watch Brat, the documentary, but I can’t because I don’t have (wherever it’s being streamed). Ugh. Also, what is the deal with Stranger Things next season?

Kari, I have NO idea how to look up my google searches, but I’d probably have Dense Breast Tissue in there somewhere.

    1. I had to Google ‘how to look up Google searches…’ I didn’t include it in this post since I’d already covered it in one of my previous Google posts.🤣

I do love Bob Dylan songs. Lay, Lady, Lay is my favorite.

  17. This post feels almost like a poem, a self-portrait. It gives such a layered picture of you and your life. If I were still in the classroom, I’d for sure be using this an inspiration for some kind of assignment. Especially for the beginning of the school year.

    Oh, and last three searches:

I had more cicada searches, but I left them out—I didn’t want to bore everyone. We never got cicadas up here. They showed up in the Chicago area and parts of Wisconsin, but our suburb was spared. 😊
