In 1985, I was Ella’s age. Look at how much good music…
I know some of you are currently reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. This quote was in my book, and it struck me as universal.
Priorities
I recently discovered this on Spotify and have been listening to it repeatedly. I had no idea it was an old song that was written in 1970, the year I was born. This Mortal Coil performed it in 1983, but I prefer Wolf Alice’s version.
The soul garden so far…
Suzanne recently shared her mother’s potato salad recipe, and we talked about how special handwritten recipes are. My sister in law gave both my mom and me these wooden cutting boards with my grandmother’s egg custard recipe written in her handwriting many years ago. The cool thing about this is that it also has my mom’s handwriting in the title, the “delicious” comment, and the additional ingredients. While I will never use it for its intended purpose, it makes a lovely keepsake.
Oh I love that Grover bookmark; that was one of my all time favorite books growing up!! And that cutting board is much to precious to actually use as a cutting board. How sweet to have your grandmother’s (and mother’s) writing preserved like that.
I love it too. I also have some recipes in her handwriting. My mom has recipe books filled with both of their writing. Someday, I’d like to turn that into artwork.
We had a night wedding but with candles only lit on the alter, not down the aisle. Can you imagine clumsy me in a long dress trying to not catch on fire while going down the aisle? Apparently everyone who knew me could and told me NO to candles along the way. 😊
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is such a great book! Thanks for linking to my book club – it’s been fun to do such a close reading of it. Also, it IS a universal book despite its very specific nature.
That Grover bookmark…that was one of Phil’s favorite books when he was a toddler. I used to read it in a Grover voice to him. (And be very hoarse by the end of the book, lol.)
I love your mom and dad. Well, I just barely met your dad last week, but I can tell he is a sweetheart, too. I hope they have many more anniversary celebrations together.
Can you believe my zinnias are still not blooming?! Some that I scattered on the ground are just now coming up and then the ones in a pot I planted earlier – that only gave me two stalks – are like 15″ high but no blooms. What the heck?!
Love that Betty Smith quote. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is one of my all-time favorite books.
The video of your home…I could just bask in all that beauty. I’m sure you do when you’re doing your soul homework.
I had never heard Song to the Siren. Listened to both versions you mentioned and I agree, I like Wolf Alice’s version much better.
Laughing out loud at your I Hate Running t-shirt. Trust me, I concur. I have two sayings about that. One: “If you ever see me running, it’s because the cops are chasing me.” Two: “I don’t run. It makes the ice cubes jump out of my glass.”
Melanie, I got that bookmark from Read Between the Lynes. On Saturday, I took Mike to Woodstock because he’d never been and he loves Groundhog Day. We visited every location you took me to last fall! And now, whenever I look at my bookmark, I’ll remember Phil and you reading that book and being hoarse by the end.
They are very special people. I’m so glad they live nearby and can spend time with my friends. They love you as well.
So I’ve got some that are blooming and some that aren’t. The ones in bloom are in the front yard. Those in the backyard are poopy heads. This summer, all of my wildflower seeds have turned into poopy heads. They’d better get their act together fast. 🤣
The ice cubes jump out of my glass….THAT IS THE BEST THING I’VE HEARD TODAY.
The Monster at the End of the Book was one of my favourites as a kid! I love Grover! YOU TURNED ANOTHER PAGE! I am coveting such a bookmark!
Love your selfies, always!
Okay, I had to look up the book’s publication date…1971? I don’t remember ever reading that book as a child! I only remember reading it to my kids. So today I learned something new! OR I’m forgetting something old…🤣
I should have bought all of them because it’s just SO CUTE. If I see it somewhere else, I’ll buy them all and mail them to everyone who wants one.
I love the Egg Day post — and the idea, and the couple who get so excited about it.
Awww, how cool that you found the Tree Grows in Brooklyn reference in the wild!
And your cutting board with recipe — wow. What a TREASURE. The handwriting, the commentary, the food itself. It’s all so evocative of home and childhood and momness. I find myself teary looking at this. Thank you for sharing it.
Isn’t it fantastic? I found it in a bookstore and thought, MINE! 🤣
About egg day- I immediately thought of my parents when I saw it. Then I realized it could be my husband and me. Then I realized it probably applied to the majority of us.
YES. I love how we are all interconnected!!
I loved your mother’s handwritten potato salad recipe. I enjoy handwriting in general, but there’s something special about handwritten recipes. Thank YOU for sharing it and her. 😘❤️
Kari, I freaking LOVE that message from Cory Allen. Brilliant! And spot on!
The sneaker shot reminded me when I was a kid and got my first pair of black high-top Converse. I’m so glad to know Converse are still the rage. They are a classic!
That photo from your parents’ wedding album is beautiful. Being raised Catholic, I used to enjoy go to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve when they would light the candles all throughout the church.
GOD, how I remember when “Like a Virgin” came out. I used to have it on a tape cassette and played it all the time while driving. Enjoyed all those 80s songs!!!
Enjoy your video clip of Morning Soul Homework. You home is so bright and cheerful!
I’m a lover of thunderstorm clouds, so I LOVED that photo of the storm rolling in.
I still have CD’s and younger people look at me and say, “What’s a CD?!?!” LOL!
Always enjoy your “What I Kept” post, my friend! Like this one!
Ella and her friends love their Converse. I also wear hers on occasion. 🖤
Growing up, we would occasionally attend the Midnight Service at that church! We weren’t Catholic, but that church was founded by German immigrants to the town. Every Christmas Eve, by candlelight, they sing Silent Night in German. It was very special.
Those songs bring back so many happy memories. Wasn’t the 1980s a great era?
Do you remember buying the LONG paper boxes that CD’s used to come in??
Thank you so much for all of your sweet comments. They make my day so much brighter. Have a great weekend, friend. 😘❤️
I’m not sure if I can express how much I love this weeks, things you saved. You are a frickin inspiration. The images, sounds, tastes, memories, pets, quotes, and that t-shirt that sums up both our lives. Perfection. Hugs, C
I love your morning soulwork video! What a lovely space, lovely sound, and it made me feel so calm.
The Monster at the End of This Book was one of my favorites as a kid. It was also one of my favorites to read to the kids when I did storytime at the library. They’d all scream in delight! Fun memories!
I love it too! It’s my most favorite room in our home.
Yes to screaming at that book! I loved reading that book to both of my daughters, and they would scream with happiness too!
The Grover bookmark is a classic! So many questions about Plastic Bertrand . . . the name . . . and if he’s singing in French, why do I not hear the Quatre, Trois, Deux, Un? I’m so confused . . .
LOL on Egg Day. My husband and I are getting to that point. We get excited about dumb stuff, too. The very first wedding I ever attended was for a cousin and it was an evening wedding and I was completely enchanted. I was probably about 8 years old and I still remember pieces of it. I thought my cousin was so handsome. Good memory!
The tweet about the funnel cloud and still getting her food was hilarious. I admit, I’m becoming numb to these weather alerts. We had one yesterday from the mayor (by email) around 4 pm while I was getting ready to meet two friends at a brewery. We furiously texted each other that we should leave immediately so that we’d be home before the evening storm. So yeah, it rained around 6:30 pm. Not exactly severe weather. Whatevs!
That is yet another reason to love it! SO CHAOTIC! Ca Plane Por Moi is his most famous song. He’s Belgian, so maybe his French is a different dialect?
When my husband works from home or on weekends, we look forward to lunchtime. 🤣
I love the idea of nighttime weddings!
I think we worry about the weather at the start of each season, but then we lose interest. By mid-summer, we are seasoned thunderstorm veterans, and nothing stands in our way of our Italian beef. It’s the same in the winter. By February, snow and advisory? PSHAW.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a long-time favorite; now I want to go back and re-read it. I “borrowed” my copy from my grandparents’ bookcase, probably more than 45 years ago. When I told my grandma how much I loved it, she told me to keep it. Damn, but I miss my grandmas lately. Always more in the summer.
And I love the photos of you, especially in the running hate t-shirt. You are my kindred spirit. :-)

OMG. So many things I wanted to HEART on this post. Why can’t I heart them? Wait, that’s not how it works or how any of this works.
That damn adorable but murderous cat! She must be Peanuts’ kindred spirit.
1985 had so much good music. That was my senior year in HS and the year I met that special guy.
The swans! My heart.
The cutting board! Your grandma’s handwriting is the same as my Aunt Trisha’s! What a treasure to have.
Happy 55th anniversary to your wonderful parents; they’re inspiring.

But that is how it should be!
I watched that TikTok video several times. It’s both cute and murderous.
I love that it was the same year you graduated and met your husband!
I also love how the swans’ necks form a heart.
It gives me comfort that our relatives have the same handwriting!
They are very inspiring. ❤️
